Nintendo Switch Catch-All 2.0

Project Octopath and XC2 look like just what I'm craving on the Switch.

Mario Odyssey looks so freaking amazing that I closed the stream so I don't ruin anymore for myself. I cannot wait.

Wow, that Project Octopath trailer gave me chills. What lovely presentation! I really hope it turns out good. I could really go for a classic style RPG

That's a nice photo mode that's approaching some of the things the robust photo modes Naughty Dog and Guerilla do. Should be perfect for that game. All I really want is a depth of field adjustment which it has.

Mario Odyssey looks f*cking amazinggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

Waiting for the Octopath demo to finish downloading... Looks to effectively be "Team Bravely Default does SaGa". Which of all the franchises to get a run of direct/spiritual successors (SaGa: Scarlet Grace, Legend of Legacy, Alliance Alive) that definitely seems like an unexpected one for the zeitgeist to choose.

XC2 looks good. Combat looks like standard Xenoblade blended with Final Fantasy XIII's paradigms. I'm so down with that.

Doom and New Colossus were definitely unexpected and glad to see. id hasn't been on a Nintendo platform since the N64 era!

Very interested in the Arcade Classics stuff since that's a part of the company's back catalog they haven't mined yet. However, it's odd they didn't show off Donkey Kong and it's pie factory stage.

For what it's worth, Arc System Works has been leveraging a similar approach to their River City games although not to nearly the same level of depth and detail. The 2D sprites on 3D backgrounds is a weird juxtaposition, but it really works when it's done well.

From what I understand, we will never see a port of the arcade version of the original Donkey Kong due to the lawsuit with Ikegami.

Interesting. I guess I should bump up that Retronauts episode in my podcast queue.

I thought it was a mixed bag. The voice overs seemed kind of bad and the UI is so busy. The battle system looks ok and the world looks fun to explore. But if XC1 didn't have such a good reputation, I would be a pass on this game right now.

I wonder if they got id Tech 6 running on Switch or if it's a custom thing like Fifa. Would be pretty cool if they did get it running.

The VO was pretty much what I expect for JRPGs these days. Especially in a trailer where there's no context whatsoever. The UI is not great but the series is basically single-player MMO so it makes sense.

At least they've learned from XCX and made the UI elements large enough that you won't need bifocals or attach a magifying glass for when you want to play on the handheld screen.

id Tech 6 scales down very well. I wouldn't be terribly surprised though if they're targeting 720p for both handheld and TV. It won't look as good as the other console versions but it'll be playable which is more important.

Wow really impressed with that demo for octopath traveler. The primrose story seems...interesting I wonder how it will be taken by people.

Music seems excellent and that art style is amazing, just became my most anticipated game.

I think I'm going to double dip on Doom as well, I love it on pc and that engine scales really well. If it's even half way decent that's an amazing portable game.

Yeah I think for kids they would be great. Smaller hands so they are more comfortable, and just the immersion/imagination factor.

Question - Does anyone have a solution for wireless sound that they like? I am missing the Pro controller not having a headphone jack more than I thought I would, after coming from the PS4 controllers. It matters to me because I like to play for a bit using headphones after everyone else in the house goes to bed. Right now I just use the console as a portable, but would like to use it on the TV if I can find a headphone sound solution.

I plug wireless headphones into my receiver to use when I'm at home. If you've got one of those there's a lot of options out there.

I'll have to look into something like that, my main concern would be how can I easily switch between headphone output and TV speaker output. I don't want to have to constantly unplug/replug something every time I want to use the Switch.

Got to the first boss with Primrose and the sprite work is great, really got me nostalgic for the classic Rpgs I grew up with.Absolutely gorgeous game, and the fact that it seems to be just a simplistic turn based game is great, beating that first boss was really challenging as well (probably should have recruited someone) he stomped me out. Please tell me that is coming out in physical release as well.

XC2 has me really excited as well, I missed out on getting deep into the first game so I'm looking forward to it. That XC branded pro controller looks really nice as well.

Mario hype is real I just watched a few quick clips as not to spoil anything for myself when it comes out but it's looking great. First time I've seen stuff for it that's really clicked and got me pumped.

3ds love is cool, but it the games are so hard to look at now. Really wish there were switch versions of that stuff, I'm glad it's still being supported though.

All in all I think it was a pretty good direct, the Bethesda support is pretty surprising hopefully other developers follow suit.

I'm still not sure on XC2, the combat looks really slow and the QTEs look dull. The presentation looks a little less inspired than the previous 2.

Even still, I'm looking forward to a nice meaty JRPG on the Switch. I hope this one clicks for me, the first game never did.

I finished the Primrose opening chapter of Octopath. The game is everything I'd hoped and more. Story and writing-wise, it feels a lot like a Final Fantasy JRPG mixed with the western D&D writing of games like Dragon Age Origins and Neverwinter Nights. I love it. It's not all that overly complex, at least initially, but it's fun and pulpy.

The 16-bit art style may end up taking the cake for best 16-bit flavored art style from Owlboy. It's gorgeous. The sprites, perspectives, depth of field, and the way the spotlight characters in cutscenes is fantastic. It's also just something I haven't seen the like of. Movement in the world feels good given the perspectives which is something I was curious. I imagine full on dungeons will be awesome because they seem to know how to work with the perspectives they've chosen.

The music is just great and feels kinda like something out of a western RPG. I dig it a lot. The voice acting was pretty good! I really liked how it fit in with the text scrolling on screen.

The battle mechanics are great. They might not be as innovative as something like Cosmic Star Heroine, but they are doing a few new things and feel quite satisfying. Died a couple times trying to figure out how everything worked on the boss fight, but realized how everything worked by the third time and finished it easily.

This was the game I was most hyped for on Switch. I think it just became the game I'm most hyped for in general now.

Nintendo web store wasn't letting me download Octopath. Apparently my ad blocker prevented the popup when I clicked the download button. Jeez.

Looking forward to playing around with it tomorrow.

I was wondering about that as everything about the game ended up making me think back to SaGa Frontier. The video both increased and decreased my interest in the game. Guess I'll download the demo, though.

Not at all into the pre-teen anime look of almost all the characters in XC2.

Give me one token anime character in the party like XC1 and XCX, fine. I can deal with it. Whole party of em? Don't know if I can deal with it.

It's a SaGa version of Bravely Default and I love it. I want more and waiting till next year for it really bums me out.

I agree. Not to mention the hot pants on Pyra. I sure as hell hope that the narrator voice is not going to end up in the final game, or that they include japanese VO. No way I could stand to hear that drone for another minute.

Sorry to be so down on this, but I'm certainly cooling on it more every time there's more to see.

Octopath Traveller looks great though, can't wait to try out the demo! I'm not going to look the Mario Odyssey section, I wanna go in fresh when it releases.

Spoiler:

Mario has nipples

Crypt of the Necrodancer and Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime are coming to Swtich. Both were shown in the Japanese Direct yesterday.

Also, Japan is getting a version of Phantasy Star Online 2 which is apparently streamed to the console?

I didn't leave myself enough time to clear the demo (picked Olberic) last night but my brain is having a hard time making sense of how to effectively clear even the simplest of encounters. Like trash mobs have way too much HP to balance out the Burst mechanic. Which makes sense but it causes trash mob fights to drag out way too long.

Also in the case where I was fighting a trash mob of 2 things with Shield Level 2 I got into a rhythm of Burst x2 Attacking one of them and alternating between the two targets which pretty much stun-locked the encounter. This works great to prevent taking damage instead of focusing on a single enemy (and allowing the other to keep attacking) but it really dragged the fight out due to the bucket of HP each enemy has.

I do think the Burst mechanic is interesting, but it feels like they need to do something about the HP levels on the mobs, although I suspect this might be less of an issue once you have multiple party members. For 1v2 or 1v3 fights the balancing makes things a bit tedious.

There will be no Japanese VO due to size constraints.

That doesn't preclude there being a DLC pack with it

Whoops, wrong thread -- posted a 3DS game :p

That's true, except if they didn't do it for XCX I doubt they'll do it for XC2.

Skyrim Begins Its Switch Adventure on 17th November

Though the Nintendo Direct didn't tell us much about The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim that we didn't already know, it did fill us in on one key detail - it'll arrive on 17th November.
The date has been pegged as November for a little while in some retail listings, but it's nice to have a firm date.

Doom Will Bring Hell to Switch This Holiday Season

In one of the biggest surprises of today's Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo confirmed that Bethesda's Doom will be coming to the Nintendo Switch in the Holiday season. Originally released in May 2016, it was a critically acclaimed new entry in the series that delivered intense 60FPS gunplay.
It's a particularly fascinating announcement as it's a title that not only looks gorgeous but stakes its credibility on buttery smooth gameplay. Evidently developer id Software is pretty confident about how its engine will play out on the Switch, both docked and in handheld mode.

Pretty surprising that Bethesda is so in on the Switch.

BNice wrote:

Yeah. I figured it'd just be Skyrim because at this rate, Skyrim is going to be playable on Roku within a year.

I will be tempted to double dip on DOOM depending on the price.

Often after a Direct I am left annoyed with the lack of specifics but this one really nailed it. Actual dates. Very happy.
