Spiritfarer looks like a day 1 but for me. Reviews are out too in case yall are curious.

So, it's a "today" for you? :D

Yeah, possibly with Raji too, if only to check out the artwork.

And A Short Hike too? Ugh. Time for a second job...

My dismissive indie showcase review:

* Greek mythology as anime sword boys Rogue Legacy
* Virtual Geocities
* Ghibli wannabe hugging sim
* What if Stardew was a GBA game?
* 20fps Subnautica
* Rankin-Bass Mystic Quest
* Zoomed-out Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
* Hotel Tycoon: Hundred Acre Wood
* Port of a game that you thought was already on Switch
* Poker with QTEs
* Well Diablo 3 worked well on Switch, so...
* No budget Superliminal
* The mandatory challenging and "emotional" 2D platformer
* A montage with too much stuff to taunt
* Remove any challenge from Goose Game

If that footage of Torchlight 3 is actually captured on a Switch I'll buy you all Bortles jerseys.

I saw the button presses saying ZR/ZL but I don't believe that was truly running on a Switch.

There are four total games they showed off that are available today. That was a delightful surprise, and they are launching an indie sale to coincide.

This has been one of the best things about Nintendo in the Switch era. Announce and release games on the same day!

I don't need months long hype trains, just give me cool stuff to play, thanks.

Breath of the Wild sucks because the hookshot in Link To The Past is OP?

Must've been running on a Switch Pro. I hear they're coming out any day now.

I was thinking Davey and Goliath but this is much better.

I'm probably in for Spiritfarer right away and am interested to learn more about Takeshi and Hiroshi.

Hades on Switch is the big news from this presentation. It's the best roguelike I've played since Nuclear Throne and a strong contender for my personal GOTY at the moment. Confirmation that the Switch version will have cross save support guarantees that I will be double dipping and playing a bunch more for the 1.0 release.

Takeshi & Hiroshi is on Apple Arcade, so likely some takes elsewhere on the forums and the net.

DSGamer, did you know Spiritfarer doesn't have combat?

I'm intrigued, considering we probably have 1000 hours of game overlap between Souls and Monster Hunter series. You know good games, sir.

I know this is the Switch thread, but just a heads up that Spiritfarer is on Xbox Game Pass for both console and PC in case anyone else has that subscription and wants to save a few bucks.

It's true. Dyni has good taste. For a while, I just played whatever he'd just finished and was perfectly happy. Until he took up some multiplayer thing or roguelike thing and I just couldn't do it anymore.

Oh Hades is Supergiant. I loved (and finished) Bastion and Transistor. Guess I should try Pyre before Hades, maybe. Think it's sitting in the pile.

Spiritfarer is on my list already, hat tip to whomever pointed it out a month ago. But I'm still working through Sundered by Thunder Lotus (same developer).

I thought that was a fantastic indie showcase. Spiritfarer would be on my Switch in work now if I knew about it. Raji: An Ancient Epic & Evergate both look superb. I'm already juggling 4 games at the moment but what's another 3 added to the mix.

Ok Short Hike was something I wanted to play since Eurogamer raved about it a year or two back, throw in that too.

Gotta love surprise drops! The indies have really made this console for me. Nintendo's own direct better be decent whenever it shows up.

The only first party stuff that's been excellent IMO are BOTW & Tropical Freeze which are primarily Wii U games. Animal Crossing isn't my thing, Pokemon looks phoned in, Smash Bros isn't my cup of tea, Odyssey was a bit disappointing, not overly sure about Paper Mario & Link's Awakening is one of the most overrated games this gen.

I'm still interested in Splatoon 2 if the campaign is worth it & that co-op salmon horde mode is fun to play with friends.

No way! I'm about 8 hours into Sundered atm, I had no idea they are same people who have just finished Spiritfarer. That's heartening as Sundered is a really good game (thanks Stele).

They're very, very different beasts.
Hades is a rogue-like.
Pyre is a visual novel with three person rugby thrown in.

Of the two, I very much prefer Hades, I got it while still in early access on Epic gamestore, and I love it.

I missed the Direct but it ended in two purchases, so...mission accomplished Nintendo.

I meant to reply to this:

All the talk is on Xbox Lockhart now. No one is busy pouring over Qualcomm spec sheets to figure out when the next Switch is coming out. That'll start up again in January.

I think we both knew it was only a matter of time before I disappointed you

Yes, very different. Pyre has its fans, but I am not one of them. Hades is now my favorite Supergiant game by a large margin.

I'll toss out a mini pitch while we're talking about it. If you have enjoyed games like Binding of Isaac, Nuclear Throne, Enter the Gungeon, Risk of Rain, or Dead Cells, you should consider Hades. It is every bit as good as those games in terms of moment-to-moment action and meta progression aspects, and it's better than all of them at pacing out when to introduce additional gameplay mechanics and new toys.

If you haven't cared for any of those games, Hades still might be worth a look. It solves a couple common complaints about those games.

Complaint #1: Those games look like cheap, pixelated indie jank. Agree to disagree on that one, but if production value is an issue, Hades has you covered. It is a beautiful game in images and even better in motion. All Supergiant games look good, but Hades is their best looking game yet. It has zero jank, or at least I have yet to run into any. It also has an incredibly good soundtrack. Don't let the early access tag fool you. Hades is polished.

Complaint #2: Those games have no story. I need a narrative to keep me invested. Not only does Hades have a large, talkative cast of characters and narrative hooks to account for the fact that you will be dying repeatedly, it has fantastic writing that is supported by stellar voice acting. To account for the fact that you're going to be talking to the same people and repeating encounters multiple times, there is an absolutely absurd amount of dialogue. I remember reading that there were over 10,000 lines of dialogue as of an update from about 7 months ago, and that number has surely increased since then. Every single line is voiced. I think I have played close to 40 hours of Hades so far, and I can't remember hearing any repeats.

Complaint #3: Those games don't let you pet the dog.

All that said, if the reason you don't care for roguelikes is that you don't like the structure of playing through randomized variations of the same content while slowly building upgrades over time, Hades is still that kind of game. Steer clear.

Thanks for the heads up

Been holding out for Hades on switch, so keen for that. Spirit Farer has been on my wishlist from the first time we saw it in some other direct. Raji looks great too. Really with Card Shark was coming out earlier. Evergate looks really interesting but I can’t stop thinking about how much it looks like Ori.

You are both fine gentlemen! Haven't paid any attention to Hades but after checking some gameplay a bit it looks right up my alley.

Absolutely, but it doesn't appear to play anything like it as Evergate is a puzzle platformer with a game mechanic I've never seen before. Not sure if I'll be grabbing it or not, but certainly could be more interesting than the aped look implies:

This is basically my hang-up. However, if I were to ever give a Rogue-like a try, Hades looks like the one it'd be.

Hades is the game Supergiant made because they were frustrated that nobody engaged with all of Bastion’s mechanics. In Bastion you figured out your favorite weapon combo and used it until you finished the story. Hades gives you incentives to switch weapons between runs. Bastion had those shrines or whatever they were that let you increase the difficulty in specific ways to customize your own challenges. I never looked at that screen again after I saw what it did. Once again the roguelike structure and reward system in Hades makes that custom challenge screen a core part of the metagame progression.

I might sound snarky, but I count all those as good things. I like variety but I need mechanical incentives to not just do one optimal tactic over and over.

We all think Evergate looks interesting, but someone is going to have to bite the bullet first to tell the rest of us if it's worth the money.

Not it.

Oh?

Oh.

I did 40 hours of Dead Cells on PC and another 55 hours on Switch, so far. Have played a lot of Gungeon and Risk of Rain too.

Looks like Hades will be a buy soon. If not before, my birthday is in Sept.

I really wish I knew what set apart the roguelikes I've enjoyed (Below; Void Bastards; Shiren the Wanderer) from the ones I haven't (all the rest of them). One of my best friends is super into Hades, and I'd like to try it, but my track record with roguelikes is so bad.

Below: Exploration
Void Bastards: ?
Shiren: Perfect strategic balance

I don't think there's a roguelite out there I'd recommend to you and I'm pretty sure Hades is more roguelite than roguelike. Roguelites tend to be about random crazy item combinations and that doesn't seem to be a thing you're into.
