The Handmaid's Tale [TV Spoilers no book spoilers]

Based on the best-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.

I watched ep1 to 4 so far and every one had something in it that almost made me cry. The funny thing is I thought this show was going to be based on a movie that had a similar name, so I thought it was going to be a dark comedy. I was so wrong.

The show is sad but very good. I only have a few problems with the show so far. There are no non military men walking around the streets. Also there are no children male or female walking around. What do the military guys do when they are off duty? It is just odd not to have any non military types walking around. Things just kind of changed overnight. Without a violent occupation it doesn't seem like things could get that bad. These are just minor things though and maybe they will be explained later.

Highly recommend the show.

You know what I hate. I hate when I write a big long post on something and the internet eats it. Oh well.

I just watched Episode 5

The main theme of this episode was defiance. On one hand we have the main character taking back her sexual freedom by having sex on her terms with a guy she wants. On the other hand we have a lady steal a car, run over some military types, and runs over the head of another guy while the other ladies silently smile on.

This was the most happy episode so far but still sad and bleak. Hmmm maybe not happy, maybe hopeful would be a better word. We finally see something that might turn into resistance.

The worst part of the episode was the woman of color being drug addict hooker that supports the new system. Just thought it strengthen negative stereotypes. However, I did like the scene and there is a person of color in more positive role.

Episode 6

A big change in this episode. They followed the wife, Sarah from Chuck for awhile. They even had flashbacks with her from before the war. Very good casting with her. She has similar presence as Mrs Underwood from House of Cards. She also is a lot taller than most of the other cast members making her more intimidating. Finding out she was a author and isn't allowed to read by her own design was a bit crazy.

The scene that made the episode was the party scene. They have a party to owner the handmaids and during the party they bring out some children. The camera goes jumps between the nasty looks from the handmaids. Their children were taken from them so parading the kids out was torture to them.

Note that the kids weren't just for the handmaids. The party also included leaders from around the world. They were showing the kids off like cattle to be sold. Some of the other countries have had zero births in years so children and fertile women are priceless. They plan to trade the handmaids as slaves.

Episode 7

Episode was called The Other Side. This was completely different from the other episode in that in was from Luke's point of view. I didn't think we would see a episode like this. The show was a bit slow but still good.

One of the best things was getting good sense of how much time has passed. The world was made more believable knowing years have gone by.

Basically the entire episode was the story of Luke from the day he tried to escape with his wife and kid until the present day. He meets up with other people trying to escape, has few flashbacks to the good old days, nearly dies a few times, and ends up in Canada.

Episode 8

More back story on a guy. In this case Nick but it is only a portion of the episode instead of the entire episode. Interesting with get confirmation that the war was a civil war done by Americans. I thought it would have been another country.

During the episode we get June being dressed up like a doll by the Commander. He then takes her to a sex club. The commander seems to think he is treating June nice by taking her out and dressing her up. June obviously feels dread over all of this and since she can't say no to any of this this is another form a rape.

The only good thing about the sex club was that June found her friend that she thought was dead. The bad part being her friend is being forced to work in the sex club.

The club goes against everything this new pious world is suppose to stand for. The world was already evil but now it is evil even by its own rules.

Saw this last night. Cannot wait!

Oh this season is so good! I've only watched two episodes. I would binge it if I could.

Oh sh*t, I didn't realize season 2 had started.

Still catching up on season 2, and the last episode I watched was the most grim yet. So many awful things happen in the last 15 minutes of the show... It's so intense I may have to take a break from it for a while.
