Cuphead: Don't Deal With The Devil

Anyone booted this yet? I'm looking forward to firing up the Steam Link when I get home and playing it on the Jumbotron.

Later tonight will be my first chance to fire it up. I might be too tired from work to last very long.

I have booted it up. Didn't get through a single level.

Which is fine. There's hard, then there's hard, and I have room for both.

Yah you do.

I'm very interested in the difficulty of this thing. Since it's 2p, my wife could be into it, because she likes the visual style. But I suspect that if it's as hard as advertised, she'll get frustrated, and frankly, I'm likely to as well.

I'm out fishing this weekend, so I won't be able to try it until Sunday or Monday night.

Edit: bad service double post

In my 20 minute bash at it, every level has a "regular" or "simple" setting when you start it. I failed on "regular".

I'm 47yo. That makes me a gaming geezer. I've passed 2 levels in this game. One was a platforming section called run and gun. And the other was the first boss fight, which was really easy.

I'm trying to beat the next level. I think there is something about the color pink. I'm colorblind. I can tell that there is a pink object but I forget what to do to pink sh*t... because I'm colorblind and I don't think in terms if colors.

Shovel knight and guacamele were completely lost on me for colorblind issues.

This kind of sucks.

I can't quite figure out what to do with the pink boxing glove on that boss. It's glowy and begging me to hit it somehow but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I read a review that mentioned some kind of parry mechanic that only works on pink things.

You press jump again to parry. So you jump up and then when Cuphead is touching the pink thing, you jump again.

Do this to the ghosts in the mausoleum too.

"Pink things?"
Some people neglected the tutorial.
Of course if you're like me and used something that wasn't an xbox or ps4 controller, the prompt to enter the tutorial didn't show up.
Also, in that mode you can't talk to NPCs cause the prompt doesn't show up.
I'm trying to hold off on the gifts until they fix this.

If you're afflicted and on Windows Store, I don't know what to do.
If you're afflicted and on Steam, I went to Big Picture Mode, Controller Settings, Enabled Generic Gamepad Support, and created a profile for my device so it acted like an xinput device (xbox controller).

I did the tutorial. But I'm colorblind. If it was hot raging pink, I would have noticed, but that muted pink looked grey to me.

Same thing with the ghosts. In my experience, I would start the level and then fail a few seconds later. I had no idea what I was doing wrong. It was not fun, and extremely frustrating.

Wow. I was worried this game would be all style and no substance but the gameplay is phenomenal. Obviously the style is fantastic as well. It's very challenging but not overly crazy--nothing unfair happens (so far) compared to classic platformers, and the most a level has taken me so far is probably six or seven real tries. The patterns of enemies always have a straightforward answer to them and most big moves are well telegraphed. Just finished the first world on regular and can't wait for more. So far one of the better platformer action games I've played in a long while.

Edit:

Spoiler:

Jk the Baroness was tough. Weapon choice is key.

This game is better than I could have imagined. I just did the first level (?) - Root Pack Contract. The difficulty seems to be on the level of Super Mario World which is perfect.

There is a 78 rpm vinyl filter on the music which was my main concern. All the audio is and feels fantastic. I'm gonna beat this game no matter what, even if I have to play levels hundreds of times. I wouldn't even mind, because the music and aesthetic is just dreamy.

I just impulse buy'd it on Steam, it was only $180 mxn pesos(about $10usd)... in the xbox one store was at $350(more on par with the $20usd normal price), dont know whats wrong with Steam with the exchange rate, but I just spent a marvelous sunday evening with my 12 year old trying and trying to beat the levels... almost at the end of the first island/level.... first you should try on "simple" to get the hang of the level/boss, then get the "soul contract" on regular.

I spent about an hour trying to get an A+ on Treetop Trouble, but it looks like the level is bugged. I got the time down to 1:18, but the game is still only giving me a B rank. The time on the score screen is white instead of gold, so I know the the time isn't low enough. I have an A+ rating on every other level on the first world and I don't want to move on until I get them all.

EDIT:

I got it down to 1:02 with a glitch that lets you skip the boss and still not fast enough.

FYI I would look into reshade. Supposedly it has some great colorblind modes that you can apply to games. I use reshade for some other sharpness mods on PUBG works well. I am not colorblind myself so have not tested the colorblind settings on reshade.

In light of current events, maybe could you change your sig?

I love the invisible dash. Anyone else think the default controller mapping is garbage? I changed lock to left trigger, dash to right trigger and switch weapon to Y. You're mostly using the four buttons dash, lock, shoot, and jump, so I wanted them to all easily be pressed simultaneously.

I am pretty garbage at this game. It's gonna take me anywhere from 5-20+ tries to get through a level which is just fine.

I’ve barely spent an hour with it, but yes, the controller mappings feel wrong. I may be missing something, but thus far, I’m pretty much holding the fire button down constantly, so having that mapped to a face button is stupid. Didn’t think to re-map the buttons yet (facepalm.gif).

Yeah, the default controls are terrible. Dashing needs to be on a shoulder button. I use a PS3 controller and I went with the following settings.

L button - Dash
R button - Super Attack
Square - Shoot
X - Jump
O - Lock
Triangle - Switch Weapons

I never use lock, so I hid it away on least comfortable button to press.

Say whaaaaat? I don't even know how you could play that way. Mostly, it makes shooting behind you way easier. Apparently you're good at the game, though, so I must be the one doing it wrong.

Lock definitely has it's uses. Mainly when shooting diagonally. It's also good against a couple of bosses. One can stand still via lock and move via dash.
I freaking hate Treetop Trouble, but only because I haven't beaten it yet.

My tried and true solution to 2d jump and shoot games is to have jump on A/X and shoot on X/Square (sometimes this is reversed). I never have to stop firing to jump. But yeah, dash is a shoulder/trigger button thing, always, even so far back as Symphony of the Night if I'm not mistaken. I probably should move EX/Super to a shoulder button, I can see where taking my thumb away could be a problem if the timing were tricky.

I of course unlocked invisible dash, but it's interesting how even though it's helpful, they've managed to design the game so everything isn't a straight upgrade. Even with the invincible and invisible dash, it has a downside, mainly that it's harder to track one's avatar and spacing, which in a game like this is huge. Very smart.

I dunno, I just haven't found a use for it. The bosses are pretty big, so it's easy enough to stay facing them 90% of the time. On the rare time I need to shoot diagonally, I hold up while walking or dashing back and forth to keep the target in my sights. Besides, it just seems like a better idea to always be on the move and dodging projectiles rather than stuck in place aiming your gun.

Just picked this up as a slightly early self birthday present. Cleared out the first world in a couple of hours, with an A+ on maybe half of them. Definitely in need of remapping the controls, the defaults are trash but I haven't settled on a set up I like yet.

I like the lock, it is very situational though. Found it exceptionally handy for the carrot phase of The Root Pack and Cagney Carnation. Also I use it to put little pauses in my movement without having to release the d-pad

Anyone try this on Windows 10? I bought it off of the store, but it crashes at the title screen. It says "press any key" and when I do, it crashes to desktop.

I have had no issues on windows 10.

Likewise.
