Sea of Thieves Pirate-all

Pages

Surprised there's not a thread for this already, so thought I may as well make one.

I've had quite a few sessions in their Technical Alpha Program so far, with a bunch more coming up over this week (starting tonight). Can't say an awful lot, but I have a feeling more and more information will start to come out about this game from here on.

Original Trailer:

Recent E3 2017 Footage:

Anyway, we can add to this as more and more comes about.

I'll very likely be picking this up on PC. Is it going to support cross-play with Xbox One?

That's what they've been saying. The PC technical Alpha started last month, but I haven't received access to that yet, only XB1. I can imagine them keeping things separate at this stage of testing, though.

I would have preferred to trial this on PC, but took what I was given at the time

I love the art style and the water looks amazing but I'm not sure if it is the type of game I would get into. I hope they put out some type of demo.

I think I want this game just so I have an excuse to talk like a pirate as often as possible.

I'm not sure what people are expecting in terms of gameplay, but I can try and answer certain things in general terms, without going into specifics.

Spoiler:

So far the premise is that you have a crew of 4 players per ship. No pre-defined roles, anyone can do anything at any time. So far I've only played with randoms, as I don't know anyone else that has it. Usual mix of people just doing their own thing, insta-leaving, or entirely working as a successful team. As you gain... XP? You get given treasure maps with an approximate location of treasure on an island. You have to use the ship's main map to plan your route, no giant indicators etc.

Overall, it's been pretty fun, but would be infinitely better with 3 friends.

I haven't delved into information on this game, but it has been on my periphery thanks to chatter from various streamers. I'm a sucker for crew based games, and this looks like it will appeal to me. I'm curious if it has MMO qualities(persistence, etc), or is it more of a session based experienced with persistent xp? If you're able to answer.

Glad it's coming to PC. I was thinking it was going to be an Xbox elusive, but am I right in thinking that's pretty much a dead thing now?

They have said that every Microsoft published game is coming to PC and most will be cross-play. So that just means you might have to buy it on the Xbox/Windows store on the PC. It appears they are trying to market "Xbox" as a platform and not a console.

Even having to buy it on the Windows store is probably a tempt thing. Dead Rising 4 you originally had to buy there, but now you can buy it on Steam;

I scoffed at this during the first trailer, but the more I hear about it, the more interesting it gets. I've seen so many people saying that canned video does not properly convey the fun parts of the game. It could end up being a blast with friends.

It was the same with Quantum Break, first Windows store only, then a Stream release later.

Spoilering in case someone doesn't want to know, for whatever reason:

Spoiler:

As for persistence, currently it's more of a session based thing, but with no time limit. What you take with you between your play sessions is your gold, and perhaps treasure maps, but there is no time limit to the session, it's more of an instance. There doesn't seem to be an awful lot to do with the gold yet, but it is early. My first session I had to play without a mic, using XB1 to Win 10 streaming. It worked as well as any other game I've played this way, which was nice. Without a mic though, it was hard. I was most use to my crew by manning the bird's nest whenever we were traveling, and ringing the bell like mad when I spotted another ship. It's actually really well done how much further you can see from up high. I love the fact that cannons need manually loaded between shots, you can only carry x number of cannon balls at a time. Repairs are again manual, with planks, etc. The anchor has to be manually raised/lowered, and the sails unfurled/angled likewise.

With a mic, and a sensible crew, it's great fun, but would no doubt get tired without them adding a lot more content/missions/things to aim for. With 3 of your friends, maybe a couple of beers, it would be an absolute hoot.

For anyone who has played both, how does this compare to Blackwake?

I haven't played it, but from what I've seen the actual gameplay looks considerably more serious (even if playing as a group is still fun). Sea of Thieves definitely isn't made to be hugely complex, so I can imagine almost any age-group playing it (with the usual drawback of potentially horrific Xbox Live chat).

Anyone playing this weekend?

Xbox or PC? Not that it'll matter as likely timezones will scupper any chance of meeting up, but I know they started rolling out the PC Alpha invites recently (and would much perefer to have one of those over xb1)

Test this weekend is Xbox. I've yet see one for the PC which i would prefer as well.

There's definitely been at least one on PC as I know someone who got in. Not sure if I'm going to get the chance to get on the Xbox this weekend, sadly.

Anyone plan on playing this during the new test?

I registered today but not sure if I'll get in. Doesn't look like there's much interest though and seems like it would be a nightmare to play with pubbies. Not too optimistic for this game unless you've got a regular crew that you can consistently play with.

Yea i found a treasure chest and my crew took off and left me while getting it. I teleport back to it just in time for it to be destroyed by another group.

Still it's a fun enough game.

Hey all! (Or is that ahoy?)

Just found this, have been following the game and the Insiders program (although without an invite yet). Looking forward to seeing more of this game.

Also, they confirmed Cross Play, and that the Win10 and Xbox versions would release at the same time.

I really love Microsofts support of cross play. I'm just not sure about this game, feels like there is no buzz. I have a bad feeling it is going to be a neat concept that makes for a terrible gaming experience. Sort of like Evolve although that had a ton of buzz around it before release. Sure hope I'm wrong, if Rare has another bust I'm worried Microsoft will exit first party games and shut them down.

Pirate games are niche to begin with so not sure what you were looking for in regards to buzz. E3 coverage is pretty much peek territory in that regard. With it being on PC makes it a guaranteed purchase for me.

Fair point. I guess I'm just getting gunshy with Microsofts inability to get a game released lately! Also wondering how this will work with randoms which is I'm sure how I'll be playing it.

Fortnite is a good example of a game that has done 4 player pick up co-op really well. Sounds promising that this game doesn't require too much teamwork to be fun?

So I have Windows 7.

Yep, still hanging onto it. Really deeply reluctant to upgrade. I understand Sea of Thieves isn't designed to be compatible with Windows 7, but how hard do people think it will it be to cludge it to work on Windows 7?

I've yet to play a single new game that hasn't been able to work on Windows 7.

The MS games rely on the new infrastructure of Windows 10. This isn't the first time MS has force people to upgrade to play their games. A good test would be if you were able to play the latest Gears of War on your PC. Then this shouldn't be a problem, but i honestly doubt that you can.

anyone play in the last test this past weekend?

I have yet to be invited.

I was invited but was obsessively playing Shadow of War - errr, I mean I was way too busy, just didn’t have time to try it out.

yea i was enveloped with the new Ghost Recon pvp mode and the new Warframe update and the Overwatch Halloween event which all started last week.
