BioWare's Anthem Catch-All

I hope we can turn off the numbers popping off enemies to show damage. I’m not a fan of that.

You can.

Hopefully. I like damage numbers just fine, but the yellow critical numbers were waaaay too big.

This is it for me, so huge that they obscured the target.

They showed what is essentially a raid so it’s a lot more siloed.

It looks good. But it also seems like a lot of "haven't I seen this before?"
It will really come down to how closely they match their rhetoric on customization.

And did anyone else have a problem with the science of "Oh no, my jet pack is overheating. I'll just fly through a trickle waterfall and fix fix fix..." I don't look that hard at my games to be accurate but that just seems like a dumb feature and doubly dumb to promote in your first gameplay demo.

I recently watched a Monster Hunter World let's play and then the Anthem video and boy Anthem came across feeling like a mod for MH! It is striking how similar the color palette, and gameplay felt.

Wonder if this is in addition to a beta or we're basically getting it as is?

Looks a bit like Titan Fall with a coop story mode. I'm in when it releases.

Yet another bit of evidence backing up my thought that this is just a bigger better version of Destiny (which isn't a bad thing as I did enjoy Destiny).

I don't know why I'm cheering against this thing. Maybe it's because it's EA, maybe it's because Bioware used to be awesome. I'm not ruling out that it might be awesome, or even that I might play it, but I'm not hoping for those things.

I think I have a love-hate relationship with what I'll call MMO-lites (as well as MMOs). They can be extremely compelling, and that's also why I don't hope for any more of them. In all of my experiences, instead of becoming a big playground for fun with friends, they become a trial of keeping up with your friends who have the most recreational time available.

I don't know what I'd prefer, because I do like a lot about these games. Maybe I'd just like to have more recreational time.

I'm in "fool me once" mode with EA and Bioware right now.

Destiny 1, Destiny 2, The Division... I've enjoyed them all to varying degrees and much of the stuff I didn't enjoy about each of them was usually addressed in a later update. For that matter, EA/Bioware tread a fairly similar path with SW Battlefront 2.

I have to say Anthem's flying/swimming "power suit" concept has definitely caught my eye. At this point, I can all but guarantee I'll be checking it out on Day 1. I'll just have to keep the trauma unit on speed dial just in case I get burned.

I guess I'm in the opposite direction in that games like The Division and Destiny are the antithesis of everything I like about gaming but the art style and the BioWare name have me intrigued enough to give it a shot, likely once the base game goes down in price.

I appreciate all the info they've released so far, as it has tempered my expectations for it. This is certainly not a game I'm interested in - regardless of the dev. I'd rather get more Mass Effect Andromeda (yup!) than this - but that's just me.

I DO think they're likely being a little disingenuous about the story stuff though to try to get as many Bioware fans as possible.

Disagree here. Their work with SWTOR proves that they can and have done this before.

It helped that the lead writer on Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 was a major guy on SWTOR.

I'm talking about their current platform and writers (Ryan). They turned SWTOR into an amazing story telling engine. It's essentially a single player game in a MMO setting. Which is pretty much how they're describing what they're wanting to do with Anthem storywise.

Also, isn't Karpyshyn working on Anthem?

He was, but he left BioWare earlier this year.

Here is a live stream they did last week:

Really looking forward to Anthem. The game is already looking great, the movement looks so fluid and I love the verticality of it. Can't believe the game still has a few months of development left.

You can now sign up for a chance to get in what they're called a closed alpha for this December 8-9.

https://ea.arcsivr.com/Portal/EA-CTE...

In the questionnaire, they ask you to say how much you agree/disagree with the statement: "A win is a win, even if it involves hints, paying to be better, or cheats"

I'm not going to wildly speculate on what that might mean but it definitely made me quirk an eyebrow, if not make a full-on "suspicious Fry from Futurama" meme face.

I signed up for the PC test. I didn't get a question like that. Nor did I get any other questions aside from what dates I was available.

It's part of the "player profile" thing that comes after picking the dates. I'm not sure if you actually have to complete that to have a chance to get in the test, it's not very clear.

I have been invited to participate in the closed Alpha for this next weekend. I’ve even had to pick a slot (Sunday evening here in the UK) to play in.

I also appear to have signed my immortal soul to EA if I tell or post anything about it,but assuming I am actually in next Sunday and manage to play I’ll let you know - vaguely - what it was like.

I think i'm in as well.

I've tested many EA games in the past. This new interface and website they have for the Anthem testing is new.

The big part is the NDA you signed to be a part of it:

You may not share, publish, disclose, distribute, transmit, post or make available, directly or indirectly, Confidential Information to any third party, until EA publicly releases the product(s) or content you are reviewing. However, you may disclose the existence of the Alpha Program and that you are a member of the Alpha Program.

Also, if you care about privacy:

When you participate in the Alpha Program, EA may collect and store data from your computer or device

I was invited. Not sure I’ll be available for any of the times they suggested, but I’m slightly curious about what state the game is in right now.

I signed up for all the available spots. Luckily both days are during my off week at work.

I also got an invite and I'm currently pending. Hoping to get in and check things out!

I’ve had no verification that my application has been accepted. At this rate I’ll be spending the entire window downloading the client.....

Go back to the registration site. Sadly i'm still in 'pending' mode.

I thought the email i got was confirmation that i got in, but it's actually inviting me to register which i had already done.
