Emulation catch-all

They're not selling the Pro on its own? That's a bad deal then, indeed. My understanding is that the dock doesn't work well at all, seeing as how it's dependent on numerous different apps behaving the same way (which they don't).

I was wondering, did you somehow buy the Pro standalone (through a different website maybe?), or did you just shell out for the pack?

No, the Pro was available standalone previously. I bought it while it was being sold through IndieGoGo. Maybe it's just temporarily off sale to hold units for the remaining preorders.

Thanks, that’s useful to know. I’ll just keep an eye out for the Pro standalone then.

The pro is available on their website, https://www.ayntec.com/collections/odin

That’s interesting but unfortunately their shipping fee is $66(!) vs $26 via the Indiegogo page. No idea why but it’s a pretty big difference.

I'm lucky I keep transferring my Trails in the Sky SC save to random different emulator devices. I had to wipe my phone to get a random pop up to go away and thought I lost it. I pulled it from the vita and back it up to google drive. Wish there was a JohnKillo proof way of not messing up like that.

Are there any emulator frameworks that implement cloud saves? That would be cool.

Im vaguely aware that amber elec has a cloud save backup but I don’t know how to sign up for it yet.

Something that allowed you to plug in Dropbox or Gdrive and then handle it behind the scenes would suit me perfectly.

Retroarch on Steam does, and it is one of the Steam Deck's killer apps IMO.

Sadly, RA is really only viable for PSX/N64 and earlier, given the inferior state of the PCSX2 and Dolphin cores vs the standalone emulators.

But having my savegames & save states seamlessly transition from my desktop PC to my Deck and back again is amazing.

My solution (at least for PCSX2) has been to change the memcards folder into a symlink to a folder on my OneDrive on both computers where I use it. I believe this would work for Retroarch (desktop version) and Dolphin as well, but I have not tested that theory yet.

AYN (the makers of the Odin) have announced a new device they are making called Loki which will be a Windows baseed system.

Loki Mini
Alder Lake chipset
64GB $299

Loki
Zen 3+ /RDNA 2
64 GB $499
256GB $599
512GB $699

Loki Max
Zen 3+ / RDNA2
512GB $799

I'm not sure what the difference between a normal Loki and Loki Max is, maybe screen size or battery?

Guessing screen size. The Loki Mini is a great price. The lower powered handheld pc is getting crowded. With the Ambernic, Ayn and even the Steam Deck to an extent in price.

At those prices I'm still loving my Odin. I think I could wrap my head around that price, depending on the games I could play, but so far the Odin does a lot for $300.

Taki isn't saying much because of NDA I'm assuming but he did say one of the Zen 3+ is a 6800U so I'm assuming that is the Loki Max and the Loki is something less than that. I'm assuming that screen size will remain at 6" for all of these. I think that is the sweet spot for pricing and moving up to 7" is a considerable jump in manufacturing cost. Also, if you want to compete with the Steam Deck, size is one way to do that. I haven't held one, but the Steam Deck seems big to me and if Loki can have similar power to a Steam Deck but be more pocketable than that could be a good selling point.

I'm a little bit intrigued because I would think there is more support for windows based emulators vs. Android. I wonder how the Loki Mini will compare to the Odin Base/Pro as far as emulation. Will it be able to run switch emulation better? You give me switch emulation, gamepass/geforce streaming, and AA and some AAA gaming than that is awesome for $300.

Also, my understanding is those will be retail prices, not IGG pricing like they did with the Odin. I think these are skipping the crowd funding and going straight to retail.

One interesting part of the IndieGoGo process is they updated backers frequently and we got an inside look at them learning from mistakes and fixing things along the way. I doubt they need to be as iterative next time.

Yes, that does sound like a practical solution. I'm actually more looking forward to future platforms that I might buy. Right now I have a handheld and a SNES Mini as my retro devices. Neither have wifi so there was never really any practical expectation that I would be able to go back and forth between the two. But I always thought it was a shame that my SNES Mini gets almost no play because my saves are always on the handheld.

Jus figured out this evening that I can play my old PS2 games straight from disc (or rip them super easy) on PC. Hardest part was fixing my PS4 controller when something went so wrong with the drivers that unplugging the controller and restarting didn't even fix it. Only gave Odin Sphere a go, but it's quite nice and UI elements get a good visual sharpening by upping the resolution, which I did not expect. Putting it on a HDD rid me of some really annoying hitches during loading.

The goal is to allow the wife to play Odin Sphere on the TV / couch without having to break out the old PS2.

Mister now has a release version of the PSX core and an alpha of a Saturn core. Pretty exciting!

Aya and AYN are two different companies making handhelds. That is confusing.

RetroArch just popped up in the "What's New" section on Steam, wedged in between hentai games so I wouldn't fault you for not noticing. This seems like kind of a big deal.

Add a PC-98 core in and RetroArch can deliver hentai games too.

RetroArch itself was added to Steam in September, but they've been adding cores ever since.

For anyone still messing with hardware, the RG503 (the weird one made with the Vita's OLED screen) finally has an attempt at custom firmware in the form of an ArkOS test release.

So both are announcing their low powered/budget models recently. The AYN Loki can be preordered while the AYA hasn't. Give me the AYA Air version.

I was thinking about getting the Odin Lite or AYA Air with the i3 chip in it, but at this point I think I'm just going to wait to see youtube reviews of the pros/cons of each of these models before deciding what to go with.

Funny you should mention that. Aside from his admitted oversight in the 128GB Loki model only having 8GB of RAM while the 256/512 versions have 16GB, the overview's not bad.

I'm not really sure which ones will get the hall joysticks of the Aya Neo Next, but I think some of the Lokis use hall effect triggers.

You know, I'm really happy with my decision to buy an Anbernic RG351MP as my first pocketable emulation handheld this year (not counting my failed flirtation with the Retroid Pocket 2 Minus two years ago). All the reviews talked a lot about what a great device it was but also cautioned folks who owned an RG350P or 351P or 351V Max or Powkiddy Max or whatever that it might not be worth the upgrade.

I didn't have any of those things, so I got to jump in when the market had settled down, there was mature custom firmware available, and it was clear what these devices were capable of, and get the cream of the crop.

I look forward to revisiting the concept of a budget windows handheld in 2024 or so and seeing where we're at, because right now it really is the Wild West, isn't it?

I definitely want to grab something in the next 6 months. I was settling on the Odin Lite but now I'd like to see how the Loki range reviews, particularly the cheapest ones. Since the price is about the same it makes sense to pick whichever one comes out on top.
