This week almost got me to pick a VR game. Giant Cop: Justice Above All hits all the right buttons for my kind of humor, even if the game does just boil down to picking things up and putting them down in humorous ways, which by my calculations makes up approximately fifty percent of the games on VR today (with 49 percent being shooting galleries and the remaining 1 percent being stereoscopic movies on Redtube). But since I don’t have a VR rig, and won’t anytime soon at current prices, I’ll give that one a bye – or, rather, a Not Buy.

(That’s funnier if you read it out loud, but only just.)

I want to state unequivocally that I’m under no pressure from the A-listers to pick Perception this week, and since more people listen to the conference call than read this, I think it’s safe to say that you already know about it. That means I’m free to pick whatever I think you should hear about. My inner contrarian wants to go with something like Tokyo 42 or Shootout on Cash Island, just because both of them have the air of games that will list as $0.49 early and often, but the most standout title this week is Perception. At least that’s how I see it.

So there you have it. Perception gets my nod for game of the week.

Suspenseful horror games aren’t usually my thing, but Perception looks – and sounds – really well done. The echolocation mechanic is a neat way to build tension and set up scares, while the hide-and-seek gameplay prevents it from being a mere walking simulator. I just hope for my sanity’s sake that it isn’t a 40-plus hour game. GOTW.

From the sublime to the ridiculous, Oh … Sir! The Insult Simulator is an insult-fighting game where you parse together insults, mad-libs style. It has scores for “combos” and bigger scores deplete your opponent’s health faster. The only hitch is, I have no idea how the scoring works. Seemingly nonsensical insults were netting huge combo bonuses while quips that seemed good were falling flat. Maybe I’ve just been offline too long.

If you have VR, Star Trek: Bridge Crew looks like the first real killer game, beyond the party tricks released so far. It may not only justify your purchase but also convince you to shell out for a few extra headsets. Who wouldn’t want to feel like they were aboard the Enterprise? Engage your wallet and make it so.

Somewhere in my family's garage – and probably no good after about two decades of sweltering summers in there – is a VHS tape where my family and I got to pretend we were a part of the Enterprise. Universal Studios had a cheesy little attraction where everyone got to play an iconic role on the vessel's bridge. My older brother got to be captain, my father was the vulcan science officer, my sister the comms officer. And my mom and I ... well, if they were equipped for a landing party we would have been the red shirts.

That was the closest you could get to pretending you were in an iconic episode of Star Trek, at least until Artemis released a few years ago. I'd like to hope that Ubisoft hired or paid that development team for laying down all the groundwork, because they took that concept and ran with it to make the official dream delivery by bringing that fantasy to life in Star Trek: Bridge Crew. If you're a Trekkie that's been chomping at the bit for a game to calm that buyer's remorse for an expensive VR headset, then Bridge Crew is there to indulge your expensive purchase just a bit longer.

I'm going to give Danger Zone a try--it's crash mode from Burnout 3! Hopefully, it is better than Burnout Crash from a few years ago.

The Last Sanctuary VR (which is, interestingly, not a VR title)

Another oddity is that the game's description clearly describes it as basically a FPS horde mode, but one of the tags for game is Sports. IMAGE(https://static-cdn.jtvnw.net/emoticons/v1/33/1.0)

I've been waiting a long time for a proper Burnout Crash successor on PC. Danger Zone isn't listed in the PC section, but according to the developer, it is releasing this week (May 30) on Steam.

After watching this video, I immediately added the game to my wishlist.

(Some NSFW language)

Super Army of Tentacles 3: The Search for Army of Tentacles 2, eh? Allllllright.

I can't believe Damascus Gear is getting an HD release. Too bad they probably left the combat as terrible as it was on the PSP. It is an interesting concept though. A twin stick loot game with mechs. We need more of those.

Thea: The Awakening on console! Wow. More 4X on console. Might have to buy that just cause.

Also might have to get Victor Vran to support ARPGs on console. They play SO much better on controllers than mouse and keyboard.

That brings back memories! My best friend in high school was a big Star Trek fan, and he was pretty proud of his Star Trek episode from Universal Studios.
