I still miss Crush, Crumble, and Chomp on my old Atari 800. I'm surprised nobody's made a serious attempt at redoing something like that- I guess to make it look right you need really good destructable terrain, and that's a hard problem. CC&C worked because that level of abstract graphics was all we had back then.
It can still be played in browser-embedded Dosbox though.
I remember a fun Godzilla game for the GameCube. That was more about monsters fighting monsters though. Smashing the city was just collateral damage in the brawl.
Godzilla from a couple years ago will scratch that itch. It's a slow, lumbering Godzilla, so be prepared for that, but plenty of crushing went on.
Kaiju Combat had a Kickstarter a number of years back. I believe those guys had done the PS2-era Godzilla and Rampage games. Looks like it's been renamed Colossal Kaiju Combat™: Kaijuland Battles and has been poorly received on Steam.
Personally, I don't think kaiju are that much in the zeitgeist of North America and Europe at the moment. Pacific Rim was a hit probably because it was about mechs first and foremost. That and the gameplay seems pretty limited. It's giant lumbering beasts destroying things, which sounds cool, but isn't the most deep concept.
There's an old PS2 game I used to be really into called Robot Alchemic Drive, where you control a skyscraper-sized mech fighting evil bio-organic alien mechs from a parallel universe. The twist is RAD takes place in world where it never occurred to anyone to put a cockpit in their giant robots, so you remotecontrol it from the pilots POV on the ground, and constantly have to balance between fighting the alien kaiju and trying not to get stepped on or crushed by a falling building.
Video game? Theres not alot of recent good ones. I think War of the Monsters is the high water mark and that from 15 years ago.
I can't imagine it's been outshined. It had so much personality.
If, for some reason, you want to get sad about a game instead of playing one, you can read up on They Came From Hollywood, an indie giant-monster RTS that looked so promising but never came out.
I like Kaiju-a-Gogo for romping and stomping. In the past, I played the heck out of "I Was An Atomic Mutant"; my son was 9 at the time and absolutely adored it. Plus the game had an irresistable 50's B movie vibe to it that carried it more than the content, which was kind of repetitive.
A remake of that with more varied gameplay and scenarios (or continuous world play) would be great.

Never heard of "I Was an Atomic Mutant" before now. Neat!

In one of those rare occasions where Greg and I agree on something, I can whole-heartedly recommend the recent Godzilla game for PS4 and Xbox One. Was a 2015 game where you keep your combo running by wrecking the city. The controls definitely take some getting used to and can best be described as PS2 controls, but it really is the best Kaiju Simulator out there.
Like board game?
King of Tokyo.

You could also Play an EDF game and destroy a city by defending it from Kaiju.
Long live the new flesh.

It’s odd, isn’t it. Kaiju is a definite part of the geek zietgiest, and yet there is a definite and real lack of games about the subject.
There is a real chance that the biggest Kaiju game of the decade will be an indy game.

Now, I love FTL and I’m really excited about Into the Breach but it does seem odd that “Giant Thing Smashes Things!” hasn’t been done more often.

Yeah, besides Rampage, the only thing I can think of is King of the Monsters.
You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know… morons.

There was a kaiju game from Kerberos, the people behind the Sword of the Stars games. Also on Steam, also not universally loved.

How did I live before digital distribution of old, cheap games?

Not a whole game, but that Psychonauts Lungfishopolis level comes to mind. "He's still heading for the orphanage!"
There is a game IIRC called Kaiju-a-gogo on steam you could check out.

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

It's ok, but a little bit clunky IMO

It was fun, but small maps and simple mechanics eventually overcome really, really cool sound effects and music.

I feel like VR would be the perfect format for a Kaiju game. Someone get on that!
(Also, an 'incredible shrinking' game.)
