E3 2017: Predictions and Wishes

We are a month out from E3 2017 so it is time to start the speculation. Once again it is all fair game. Post your bold predictions, fevered dreams, hopes, wishes, and everything in between.

Bethesda granted my wish for a Skyrim Remaster last year so maybe we can get a Morrowind or Fallout 3 one this year or maybe a brand new Elder Scrolls game. Same as last year I want some details on CD Projekt's Cyberpunk 2077. Also hoping for some Mass Effect Andromeda DLC news. On yea and some more concrete information (launch date, price, what the boring final name is) for the Scorpio.

These are my three most anticipated releases for the rest of 2017.

Hope to see more info on them, but I'm unsure if they're too small to get coverage.

Curious if we will see anything more about Below. They showed decent amounts of gameplay at last years E3 but its gone fairly quiet since then.

I'm certainly interested in Scorpio pricing and release date. Will MS pull a Sony and release it during the summer or do the more traditional and release towards the holiday season. I think the smart move is to immediately discount the existing S units and release in August rather than all but kill hardware sales for 6 months as everyone waits for Scorpio that might have thought about buying an Xbox One.

Now that Final Fantasy XV has launched, I'm hoping to see more of Kingdom Hearts III.

Also looking forward to Super Mario Odyssey, the likely Smash Bros. 4 Remaster and whatever else Nintendo's cooked up.

The Morrowind expansion for Elder Scrolls Online is likely the only Morrowind re-release I'd expect. I'd love for an ES VI announcement, but Bethesda's said that won't be for a long while yet. They may put out some other stuff in the meantime, so I'd enjoy seeing what they have coming up next.

A Red Dead Redemption 2 release date would be excellent, as that's the next major game I'm really frothing over.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the new Assassin's Creed will be like. I'll likely wait for a patch or two before picking it up, but i'm a sucker for that series so it'll be mine eventually.

Knowing when Super Mario Odyssey comes out will also help determine when I actually pick up a Switch, so looking forward to that.

My delusional wishlist of things that definitely won't be announced are:

Microsoft: Sunset Overdrive 2
Sony: Demons Souls Remastered
Nintendo: Tokyo Mirage Sessions for Switch

Is it really that time of year again?

My predictions (more wishful thinking):

  • Knights of the Old Republic 3 comes out THIS YEAR!
  • The New Bioware IP (in broad concepts with a little gameplay)
  • Kingdom Hearts III still exists
  • Beyond Good and Evil 2 still exists
  • Nintendo will present an awesome looking game that doesn't involve Mario, Link, or squids
  • Horizon: Zero Dawn will get a sequel for Holiday 2018, and
  • We finally hear more about Cyberpunk 2077

The one prediction I know will come true:

Spoiler:

Video game companies will lie to us.

Meh, Mass Effect: Andromeda DLC. Bioware announces the title of their next Dragon Age game and that's it.

In my perfect world:
A No One Lives Forever reboot!

Valve will have nothing new.

I think this one is pretty plausible.

P.S. Also had no idea you could do lists like that. That is pretty simple.

Predictions:

  • Sony has Last of Us 2, Red Dead Redemption 2 (with 30 days exclusivity on DLC) and God of War: Dad Edition and little else. New teases for Kingdom Hearts III and Final Fantasy VII: Remake to prevent any rioting in the streets. Maybe something Horizon: Zero Dawn related gets shown?
  • MS is all about Scorpio which is priced to directly compete with the PS4 Pro (same MSRP if not a $50 undercut). I would assume new Halo, Gears, Forza and finally some Crackdown 3? I don't really follow MS that closely so I've got nothing here.
  • Bethesda brings Prey DLC and new Wolfenstein or Doom title. Given their past history it's still premature for TES VI.
  • PC Gaming Show will continue to be a waste of time for everyone involved.
  • Nintendo will be Mario Odyssey, Smash Bros, Wii Sports 2 (or Wii Sports 3 depending on how you count), Xenoblade 2, and Splatoon 2. Details on the network connectivity and virtual console relegated to a press release. Expect a healthy amount of 3DS titles still in the mix.
  • Very little VR buzz this year.

Not a prediction: No Cyberpunk 2077 again this year. Everyone got the memo last year right?

What I hope to see(and hope they do a good job showing it off):

- Fallout/Elder Scrolls new game

- Assassins Creed

- One last big Halo 5 DLC for the fall before Halo 6 in fall 2018

- Some Halo 6 stuff

- Some Cyberpunk 2077 stuff

- Kinda worried about Middle Earth: Shadow of War, so hopefully something that makes me more confident they don't screw it up. Very big Tolkien fan, Shadow of Mordor was a stretch for me but I still really enjoyed it.

- Probably lots of other games I am forgetting...

I'm all in for Nintendo speculation:

  • Smash Bros, Mother 3 and Rabbids RPG for Switch. Mother 3 releases that week.
  • Pokemon Switch not discussed until after New 2DS launch.
  • Splatoon 2 bundle with ink splattered Switch.

Wish? The announcement, and demonstration, of at least three AAA games for Playstation VR. I'm now ready to buy a system, but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of high quality, compelling VR games.

Prediction? Nothing new is either announced or demoed, and PSVR begins its journey to join the PSPGo in Sony device Heaven...

Console wise, I'm interested in seeing Project Scorpio and what new exclusives are coming to the Switch.

PC wise, I hope there are announcements about Warhammer 2, Sea of Thieves, and the upcoming Guild Wars 2 expansion. Would also love some news about a new Elder Scrolls game but not holding my breath.

My hope is that nothing piques my interest. I've got too many great games to finish right now and am completely overwhelmed with the flood.

I speculate that I'm 100% surprised that E3 is still a thing

Wishes:

Dark Souls 1: Remastered
Demon Souls: Remastered

Desires:

Bloodborne 2

Sony retreads their 2015 promises. Moves onto what to expect in 2019. Wins E3.

Microsoft force Sony to think about a PS4 Pro Pro.

Nintendo?

Sony announces a blockbuster game to generate more interest in PSVR. It fails to do so.

Microsoft announces a release date for Hololens powered by Scorpio. The crowd gives a collective yawn.

Nintendo counts their growing pile of money onstage happy to not have bet big on VR/AR.

I would honesty like to know what Retro Studios are working on for the Switch. It's possible we already know and my living under a rock missed out?

You'll hear the phrase "We love our community - and we've listened to them..." infinite times.

Well if the only purpose of the console business is to count money then Microsoft is winning this war handily

I appreciate both Sony and Microsoft pushing the technology envelope as well as being unafraid to experiment and try new things for gaming. It would get boring otherwise.

Here's to the future crazy ideas we see from companies big and small.. even if 90% of them fail spectacularly.

Skaven announcement in Warhammer: Total War 2

Quarian DLC in Mass Effect: Andromeda (see earlier post, figured some elaboration is needed now that I finished the game)

Half Life 3. Of course.

Announcement of a new Elder Scrolls game, but just the title and maybe a screenshot or 2.

They'll save this for last, but I'm betting they'll announce it too, along with a short trailer. ES-VI: Black Marsh, since it's such a contrast from Skyrim.

I think there will be more details about Elder Scrolls VI, including a release date of November 2017. Bethesda has announced a big fall release the last few years (Fallout 4, Dishonored 2), and I think they will continue the tradition.

Given how poorly it seems to be doing, I wonder if we'll hear a lot about PS VR or if Sony will quietly send it the way of the Vita.

I'm going to be really disappointed if Microsoft announces a bunch of games that play on Scorpio but not the Xbox One. I'll forget it, babe, it's Businesstown, but I'll still be disappointed.

I do think Sony will continue their grand tradition of showcasing games that won't see the light of day for another few years. Get hyped for PS4 in 2020, y'all!

Microsoft has been consistent with the messaging that anything running on Scorpio will run on XBO. I think the challenge for them will be how to differentiate it with that being the case. The rumor that Destiny 2 will run at 30 FPS on Scorpio for example is not a great sign.

Docjoe wrote:

That's good to know. I had only heard it the other way around: everything on Xbox One would run on Scorpio, but no promises that everything on Scorpio would run on Xbox One.

It's been pretty successful actually, in a quiet sort of way.

I'm guessing they're over a million units sold at this point.

I'm hoping maybe they announce a tweaked version that doesn't require you to pick between VR or HDR support in your games.

Also, I'd love a new Prince of Persia game.

As I said at the time: Sony's making nice about those numbers, but a million units globally in seven months is a pathetic sales target for a peripheral, and it's certainly not enough to build a platform on. The rate of PS VR releases is slowing down, not speeding up like you'd expect on a healthy platform, and PS VR games are hitting retail discount racks and clearance bins. Fetch isn't happening, even if Sony says that they're totally happy that their circle of friends is using fetch.
