The Surge Catch-All

Update: I took Sunday off, and today I grinded up some better (light) armor. I'm sticking with the heavy weapon - it's slow but powerful. I have sometimes defeated a sentry bot, but I'm still learning how to be consistent. The problem is that they can do a jumping attack that can almost one shot me, so I try to stay in close. So annoying.

Is it the one with the flame thrower or the three legged one? If it is the one with the flame thrower you can dodge and do a horizontal attack to the back and do good damage to them.

It's the three legged ones. I've gotten pretty good at taking out the flame thrower ones. Those three legged jerks are the only mob at this point that are giving me fits, and there's two of them guarding the next place I need to go.

I'll try some more tonight and see if I can make some progress. Right now, this is my Capra Demon moment.

When you see them crouch get ready to dodge their jump attack, then target the "tail", it should only take a few hits to break it and doing so reduces their mobility and removes their most damaging attack. After that they're much easier to deal with.

This helped, once I figured out I can push up to target the tail from any angle. I finally made some progress! I died, but I finally made progress!

Spoiler:

There are a lot more of those bots!

I just lost 9k souls. Arggg.

If it's the one I'm thinking of - looks like a big shield with a camera-eye in the center? Rolls around on three "ball" legs? Swipes a big welding-arm, has a close-range fire aoe? If you play EVE, looks like a Tristan (a Nemesis, more accurately)...

The fronts of those guys are heavily armoured and will negate a crap-ton of your damage. I've found the best technique is to circle around (your left) their right (the welding-arm) side. Their attack seems easy to avoid, and you can smack them in the back (that back leg highlights blue (always?) for WAY more damage.

Different enemy, the ones they're talking about are twice the size, three times as fast, have a super long range leap attack, and no unarmored "blue" components.

I haven't had much time to play in the last week but today I managed to pushed through the third area, beat the third boss and dive pretty deeply into the fourth area. I am constantly being surprised by this game and it's level design. The art design of the areas can get a bit repetitive but how you move through them and how they interact with each other seriously puts Dark Souls to shame. I don't say that lightly.

Smashed the second boss. Pretty happy with that. It seemed easier than I expected at first. Smashy Smashy.

I've taken a few days off. I finished up the third area and got to the boss, but I banged my head against it for a while and called it quits. I can probably beat it with enough practice, but I'm pretty frustrated with the boss design in this game. When I finally beat the second boss, it felt anti-climatic after all the time I put into it. The health bar on the screen for that boss is weird, so health goes down faster later than earlier. I know it has to do with removing arms, but I beat the boss without removing all the arms, and it was a surprise when I did it. It also doesn't help that the camera is really bad during boss fights. In these types of games, I generally like boss battles the least, so The Surge having (IMO) bad boss battles makes it hard to push through to the sweet level design.

Anyone still playing this? I just got into it. The combat is really fun.

Surely not much talk about this game.

Even the "Let's Play"ers, seem to have just let it quietly slip off their channels. (at least, that's what it feels like)

I still like it. I just need to get back to get.

I haven't come back to it after I bounced off the third boss. I have a history of falling off Souls games at bosses, and so I may not come back for a while.

Way to remind me before the Steam sale! Putting this on my list to look out for.

I got distracted by another game for a few weeks but (coincidentally) picked it up again this morning and managed to push through to the final boss, who is absolutely kicking my shiny metal ass.

The later areas are the best in the game, with one seeing you battling through the pristine executive offices while melancholy muzak plays, and another area features the medbay on a large freight elevator, requiring you to move your base physically through the area in order to progress.

If there were a bit more variety in the earlier areas and the story was less generic this would be a very strong contender for my Game of the Year.

EDIT: woot! forgot that I had a ton of scrap farming implants installed so I switched some around and beat the final boss on my second attempt. According to the achievements bubble I am one of the elite 8.73% percent of The Surge players on Xbox who beat the game.

I've been trying to beat the bosses by the "hardcore" method to get the version 2 weapons that they drop. It's a cool concept. So far, I've been able to do it on the first three bosses. My heart was pumping so fast on the third boss.

I've been hesitant to pull the trigger on this one cause I have so many games on my backlog.... but right now, it's at it's historically lowest price on steam. $15.99

It might be time, but what are people's opinions of the Walk in the Park DLC? Should I pay 24.99 for the complete pack and pick up the DLC as well?

Only "my opinion, man."

When I first saw it, it looked like sci-fi Dark Souls - sweet! Then I started watching gameplay, and got pretty "meh" about it. Then the gameplay videos just seemed to dry up. I feel like it'll drop lower than $16.

Heck, I bought DS: PtD Edition for $8!!!

They are planning The Surge 2, so it's fair there will be a sale.

I played this a bit recently after failing to click with Nioh. For my tastes this was the better of those two games, and a pretty good but not quite as good as Souls games game. '

The gameplay videos do a really poor job of communicating the satisfying elements of the combat.

Pass on the DLC (maybe) I never got it and never felt something was missing.

For some reason, this game really got its hooks into me. I beat it and truly enjoyed it.

I had been watching it a long time then the other day I thought, "Hey, maybe there's a demo." There was, I played it for like an hour and was immediately enjoying it... so now it's on my list to acquire soon and then the sale pops up!

It's really not a question of whether I will pick it up today, now it's really whether I splurge and get the DLC... the DLC is only 15% off right now, so it will probably be even cheaper in the future...

The Surge is one of my favorite games from last year, I’ve already double-dipped and have it both on console and PC. I was actually just thinking about starting a new playthrough.

You can probably hold off on the DLC if you’re uncertain about the game- the base game tells a complete story as it is, the DLC is just a fun extra area and some more weapons. You’ll probably be able to get it cheap later on.

I've been watching The Surge for a while now after liking the demo. I can't shake the feeling that it will be in a Humble Monthly if I buy it. I never take advantage of the Humble Monthlies because I either have the reveal game already or I'm not interested. I do have Horizon Zero Dawn that I need to finish too.

Well I did it... DLC and all. I quite enjoy the throw-away DLC that adds a proximity alarm when you're near loot drops. I'll probably turn it off after I start to max out my rigs, but for now it's helping me find a lot of hidden things.

I to am worried it'll show up on Humble Monthly but oh well... I can't wait for stuff I want to randomly show up on there.

Anyway, so far I am not disappointed. Today I got as far as the first boss. I was a little annoyed that I got trapped by him and forced to fight, but it was a pretty good battle. Glad I pulled the trigger.

So yeah. been mainlining this game for the better part of the last week. I learned that it was by the same people that made Lords of the Fallen. Had I known that going in I probably would have held off, because I did not like Lords of the Fallen, so I'm glad I didn't learn about it until later.

I really like the push-your-luck mechanic they introduced in LotF where you have a multiplier that increases the longer you are out without returning to your base.

There's a surprisingly fair amount of nuance to the combat system, and I particularly enjoy fighting the robots where you can duck and dodge and counter. I don't find those systems particularly useful against normal humanoids, but I love the targeting and cutting off body parts to harvest materials too. It's what I imagine Monster Hunter must be like (having never played Monster Hunter)...

My one annoyance so far has been getting stuck in areas. I went to Creo World accidentally, not knowing that a train I had found would take me there and I couldn't figure out how to get back. So right smack in the middle of the game, I just diverted and did the entire DLC (well, the first half anyway). Then once I finished the DLC and still had not come across a way out, I backtracked to the start and found the very-obvious door which I had somehow missed earlier on, and left the area. So chalk that up to stupidity..

But then when I got to the Research Lab, and wasn't ready to leave Central Production B, the same thing happened. Only this time there was no easy way back. I had to press through the entirety of R&D to get back. And, unfortunately, I had missed the Exosuit upgrade prior to heading in...

Anyway. Despite that I'm loving it.

Spoiler:

I gave money to Jo, then stole her weapon, then reimbursed her for the stolen weapon. I really shouldn't have reimbursed her. She's going to kill Hobbs, and it's going to be on me.

That I can follow the story is a big plus too....

Yeah, I thought the boss fights in Lords of the Fallen were awful and quickly quit that game. The Surge looked like an improvement in every aspect from what videos I've seen.

I just found this game because Keith Ballard started playing in on his Youtube channel

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?lis...

I am really enjoying it so far. I have added it to my wish list for the PS4.
