Alright, so now that the guy that wanted to sign Cousins to a long-term deal is gone, can we move on to the part where he gets traded to San Francisco?

Nope!

Fine. Hoyerball it is. We'll see you in 2018, Kirk.

Or perhaps Barkleyball.

Well let's just sign Cutler next, take the whole damn 2016 Bears QB depth chart.

Then maybe you can get Glennon in 2019!

Wow. Thank gawd. Ravens re-sign Brandon Williams to a 5 year deal at $54 mil.

Kirk is still in Play He has to sign the tag no matter where he ultimately plays and he has always said that he would play and be happy about it publicly.

Apparently Carolina spent all its FA agent on Ryan Kalil's brother, so they're looking for WRs in Tampa Bay's scrap heap. Someone allegedly named Russell Shepard, in case MMD is wondering.

I am genuinely bummed he's leaving Tampa. He's basically a special teams stud who got a chance to play some WR last year, and did pretty well. Not really more then #4 guy or #3 at best, but excellent on special teams. Really good player.

Aha, gotcha. That's what the Charlotte story says. He's basically Philly/Corey Brown 2.0, and the Panthers let him walk.

If he's fast, he has a shot at playing more than special teams. Carolina has zero speed in its WR/TE corps at the moment (except for one guy who might not be on the roster after this is all over).

I have a feeling the 49ers will have an infographic like this the way they're spending for less than amazing talent.

This is really a tautology though. Bad teams are always going to be tops in free agent spend.

Good teams spend a larger portion of their cap extending the players they already have. Bad teams don't have enough good players to spend their money on, but still have to spend their way above the salary floor.

Carolina is trying to bring Julius Peppers back to Charlotte.

I think Carolina figures he has 1-2 more decent years left. Better, though, it means Pep will retire as a Panther and be the team's first real HoF player. (Kevin Greene, Bill Polian and Reggie White don't really count.)

Yeah, I know Peppers has played in CHI and GB nearly as long as he played in Charlotte, but Carolina Fan (me) sees him deep down as a Panther.

I know this is going against conventional wisdom, but I honestly think that CLE is onto something with the whole stockpiling of draft capital rather than building through FA. This appears to short circuit the whole overpaying for FA's because they suck thing and keeps cap space available for when the rookies get good enough to form the core of a team that needs the handful of pieces in FA necessary to make a deep playoff run.

We have yet to see if they have the front office staff to make it happen, but it is a solid plan. Imagine what kind of American Carnage(tm) someone like Ozzie Newsome, Bill Bellicheat, or John Elway would be able to wreck with that kid of draft capital. It would be Haaarable.

I'm with you Paleo. The strategy has more potential to be short term successful compared to other sports due to NFL rookies expected to be productive as soon as they step onto the field.

OR

They really suck at drafting good players and constantly chase every decent free agent by overpaying them in an attempt to make the team good.

Adam Schefter is saying Mike Mayock is being considered for Washington's GM position. Please don't ruin Mike.

Who are they supposed to chase? The not-decent ones?

For all the overspending they're supposedly doing, they're still near the very top of free cap space year after year after year.

That would suck... but on the other hand, what are his feelings about pick 1.2?

EDIT: Milkman's boy Mark Dominik also listed as a candidate for the position.

Mark Dominik should take that job. He should bring Schiano on as his personnel guy.

Mayock needs to stay the hell away.

Washington signs Terrelle Pryor to a 1-year, $8 mil deal.

I'm shocked at how weak the market for him turned out to be. I imagine there were offers longer than 1 year, but not for more money per-year, so he took the prove-it deal so that he can hit free agency again in a year.

Matt Kalil's replacement in MINN? None other that ex-Panther Mike Remmers. Weird coincidence that one is.

I bet you five bucks* his contract is saner that the one Carolina have to Kalil.

*I meant 55 million bucks sorry about that

Contract talks between the Packers and Jared Cook broke down, Packers went and signed Martellus Bennett instead.

Think the Packers came out ahead on that one.

Yowza, that's a nice turnout for GB.

5 years, $30 million. Seriously.

I don't think "saner" is really the word. More like a dumpster fire instead of an oil rig fire.

Good lord. I'm incapable of blocking, and am willing to settle for far less.

Joeckel wasn't good, and got a contract that reflected that. How did they manage to get that much?

Maybe Joeckel's agent is Russell Okung?

Joeckel's getting too much too, but just as a 1 year deal. Nothing Joeckel has done is worth $8 mil in 2017.

The craziest part with Kalil's deal is that it doesn't even represent a raise in pay from 2016. He made $11m and change last year, as it was the option year on his rookie deal.

I honestly don't know what Minnesota saw in 2015 that made them say, "well, we paid $2 mil for that, let's pay $11 mil for it next year". But I also have no idea how they looked at Remmers and said, "$6 mil a year for that, sign us up!". Like, just draft a tackle in the 5th round or something.

These deals make Dallas's big $98 mil Tyron Smith contract three years ago look absolutely genius. That deal runs through 2023 and averages $12 mil a year. Three years after that was signed, Matt Kalil is getting paid an average of $11 mil a year.

Cooks to Pats.
