NFL 2017: Offseason / Pre-Draft

Just got a message from PFF, they've changed their account types.

The premium stats are now in "PFF Elite", which is $200.

Oh man... $200 is a lot more attainable than $1500, but it's still a good chunk of money. All those ads I ran during last year's threads earned $0

Well, target your ads better; most people weren't interested in your ex-Bucs kicker dating website.

An ex- and current Bucs kicker rating website, on the other hand ...

You're totally gonna buy that and I fully expect you to give me your login.

God damn it, when I saw who the latest comment was from, I knew it was going to be that link.

I do rebut a premise of his, mainly the idea that the team picking up Bortles' 5th year option signifies nearly as much as he thinks it does.

Why are the Jags so eager to wager $19 million on the belief that Bortles will play well? (...) Why potentially expose $19 million on a hunch with no documented evidence it will pay off.

These comments about money always fail to recognize that the Jaguars sit on a throne of unused cap dollars, and how much of a "wager" is $19 million to a team with $51 million of unused 2017 space that will end up rolled into 2018? Money that they have to chip away at somehow.

If Bortles is terrible in 2017, absolutely nothing about his $19 mil (injury-only!) guarantee in 2018 would impede the team from acquiring someone else. All it does is protect themselves in the event that Bortles has a great 2017.

I agree, this seems like a silly argument to me. They picked up Bortles' option because they're willing to give him one last chance to regain the form from 2015. Sure, he was still king of garbage time in 2015, but he was at least good in garbage time. Last year he was a string of Josh McCown gifs. They're betting that 2015 comes back and that it's better to pick up his option than

I mean, can you imagine if they didn't pick up his option and then got stuck tagging him? That would be the truly wrong move. Now they can get out of next year pretty easily while making it look like (to Bortles, especially) that he is worth investing in. They're probably playing a bit of psychology with him in order to motivate him, which, if true in any way, fails the door test.

Over the past five years no team in the NFL has been as generous with free-agency money as Jacksonville.

And yet they still have one of the absolute lightest salary caps in the league, numbers which they need to push up to avoid the salary floor.

Yup, you continue to succesfully point out what a lazy argument this is, much like them not being able to sell tickets.

Currently, four of the top five highest-paid players on the Jags have come via the free-agent spending sprees. Of that five only Allen Hurns, who was signed after going undrafted, is homegrown.

This is mostly because of Gene Smith. If he hadn't picked Tyson Alualu, Blaine Gabbert, Justin Blackmon and Bryan Anger you might be able to talk about the high paid quality homegrown talents. Instead you have a number of people on rookie deals and free agents. So, yeah, the team spends a lot in FA.

A lot of the article reads a bit too much like "wins are everything". Seems like old school thinking, which makes sense seeing as he is old school. I wish he'd write more about front offices...

Lombardi is not someone who's opinion I would value. Which is the nice way of saying he's a blowhard and an utter twit; his articles are far more HOT TAEK than anything else. And, yeah, Bortles has been lousy and in all likelihood will still be lousy, but it's not like the Jaguars had any other real options. If there's a 10% chance Bortles turns into a decent QB, I'd take that over Fitzcraptrick. In a strong QB draft, sure, maybe I'd gone for a new guy, but this wasn't one of those. Tragically. Because a #4 Patrick Mahomes pick would have be HEEEEEE-LARIOUS.

The main reason to pick up Bortles' option is doing so was undoubtedly a less-than-ideal choice, but it was the best of the available less-than-ideal choices out there.

Yeah, it's exactly this. If there was a better QB draft this year, QB would absolutely have been in play with that #4 pick. Based on what was realistic, between the draft and a free agency class where Mike Glennon was the $15 million a year prize (even if I agree with you that he's worth a team giving a chance to), riding it out with Bortles for another year was the best option.

And having made that choice, of course they're going to throw their verbal support behind him. Much like me. BORTLESMANIA! *sigh*

Yeah, it's exactly this. If there was a better QB draft this year, QB would absolutely have been in play with that #4 pick. Based on what was realistic, between the draft and a free agency class where Mike Glennon was the $18 million a year prize, riding it out with Bortles for another year was the best option.

And having made that choice, of course they're going to throw their verbal support behind him. Much like me. BORTLESMANIA! *sigh*

Plus they will have around the 4th pick in the draft next year too so we can see what happens if there is a decent QB class in 2018.

Good point. Jacksonville is playing the long game here with their future draft position.

Like they do every single year, apparently.

Hey these threads belong to Milkman or something now, he should be the one buying access for us to leech.

Hey, let's talk sh*t about quarterbacks other than Bortles.

Here's one for MMD: Jim Kelly says that Chad Kelly "finally gets it".

Oh.

Oh my.

In case you don't have Amazon Prime, they did a show called All or Nothing that was basically Hard Knocks for the entire season of the 2015 Cardinals.

They shot another season last year apparently. They followed... the 2016 Rams.

Hard Knocks is one thing, that's training camp and everyone ends on a high note.

This is an entire disaster season that undershot "7-9 bullsh*t" by 3 wins and got a staff fired.

That is gonna be something to watch.

And probably no team will agree to do it again after it airs.

All or Nothing with the Cardinals was amazing, but the Rams from last year? Oh my. That sounds juicy!

Second that, *Legion* and Garion333. The 'All or Nothing' format is far more revealing and far more interesting than quasi-talent show that is 'Hard Knocks'.

And agreed - given the Rams' 2016 season - it's going to be car-crash viewing. I think I'm going to move my sofa away from the wall so that I can hide behind it when those moments come.

More like every week in a meeting where he hasn't been canned.

From the looks of the players, I'm pretty sure this has nothing to do with Jeff Fisher, and it's just that the guy on the left farted.

He has more of a currently still farting look.

This going to probably be prettty popular in St. Louis. Can't wait.

I also love how half of them are looking toward the lone Christmas present, like they're not allowed to open it. ("Presents are for winners!")

And the one sad strand of lights on the wall too. About as much heart went into that decoration as went into most Rams gameplans.

It's a box of socks, which is the Christmas present equivalent of a typical Rams season.

Tom Brady is the cover player for Madden 18. OK, fine.
