Dead cells?
Dead Cells is most definitely not turn based
I have a Saitek X-55 Rhino HOTAS (thanks again, carlbear95!), and the only game I've used it for is Elite: Dangerous. What else should I try it with?
On PC, have played a number of space sims but have very little experience of real-world flight sims.

Chorus just came out and is a surprisingly good. More arcade-y than Elite, but worth trying out!

Darkest Dungeon 2 might work for you. Its like Oregon Trail Darkest Dungeon version.

Edit 2: How about ADOM? I think you can play with permadeath disabled, and that's a crazy deep game.

I think these are the two I'm leaning towards most. The How Long To Beat page for ADOM is pretty wild, so I may pick up Tangledeep first. Both seem exactly what I'm after though!
ARISE thread!
So I just finished River City Girls 2 for the Nintendo Switch this week, which was a great game to play on my commute. And now, I'm looking for something to replace it, but I have no idea what to choose!
Basically, I need another commute game. Something I can enjoy in 35-50 minute increments. But there are, obviously, quite a few options for the Switch, and I genuinely have no idea where to go next.
If it's any help, here are a few titles I was considering:
Retro Bowl - Just $5, surprisingly deep and a great "small increments" game.
Hades - I didn't see a single description of this game that was not borderline pornographic in its praise, but would it be good in 40-minute intervals?
Fire Emblem: Engage - I played almost all the way through Three Houses, although I did find it incredibly repetitive near the end.
Breath of the Wild - I have literally never played a Zelda game in my life (I was a Sega kid) and again, everyone describes this game as essentially perfect. But would it be good for just commuting?
Monster Prom 2 - I mean, why not?
Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4 - One of those games that I have "seen of" but haven't ever really tried. I'm curious and reticent due to my general dislike of a fair number of anime/JRPG tropes. (And yet I mostly enjoyed FE:3H!)
Front Mission - I mean, I enjoyed some of the new Battletech games. So... same? Kind of? Maybe?
So yeah, that's a list of games I've seen in the store that, off the top of my head, I was like "Huh, maybe I could try that?"
On my PC, I'm broadly doing sports and sims, but I like having my switch to try out some new stuff, even if I only play it occasionally. So I need a game that I'll be okay with playing for maybe a total of 90 minutes a day.
Any ideas?
Breath of the Wild and Hades are two of the best games available on the platform.
Both are great in small and large increments
Breath of the Wild is great. I played it in lots of short sessions. Worked out well.
Another suggestion: Hyper Light Drifter.

My picks:
- Civilization VI. The reason I bought a Switch (until the Steam Deck took over my portable Civ6 duty). Easy to pick up and play a couple turns.
- Into the Breach. Especially good for bite-sized strategy.
- This War of Mine. When you want to see just how depressed you can get in those 35-50 minutes!
- Prison Architect. Most of the big colony management sim games are too heavy for Switch, but Prison Architect is a good one that works on Switch.
- Streets of Rogue. The best immersive sim style roguelite.
- Nuclear Throne. THE BEST BULLET HELL ROGUELITE.

Along those lines, ~45 minutes is probably about right for an XCOM2 mission. It’s not the best way to play the game (load times are long, game doesn’t look as sharp, etc), but even in such a diminished state it’s still great.
Hades is fantastic, but I wonder if it's suitable for a commute. It can become really intense near the end of a long run, and some runs can approach an hour - interrupting near the end seems like it would be really flow-breaking.
That's obviously just my opinion though.
I would recommend checking out Streets of Rage 4 or TMNT: Shredder's Revenge if you haven't already. I've also enjoyed the time I've spent with Final Vendetta so far.
I'd have the same concern about Hades; I wouldn't want to get half an hour into a run, get to work, and then have to wait until my lunch break to try to finish it. OTOH it's awesome so maybe pick it up anyway. (:
Breath of the Wild is amazing, and very "pick up / put down" friendly.
Rogue Legacy 2 is a good one if you're into roguelites. Can also have longer runs, but it's not quite as frenetic as Hades so I think it's a little easier to put down and pick up midrun.

Agreed.
I think Hades would be an excellent pick, depending on your play style. What is your comfort with going fast in action games?
Runs can go upwards of an hour, yes -- if your play style is more methodical and deliberate. If you're a more aggressive player, or focus on the melee weapons instead of the ranged weapons, your runs will be faster. And in fact, once you get deep enough into the game, there are options to impose some limitations on yourself in exchange for greater rewards, and one of those is a speed-run timer. If you choose that option, it will force you to finish runs in 40 minutes or less.
If you want to do a whole gameplay loop in one sitting -- the run, + the stuff at your base -- you might have to get used to dividing that up between your morning and evening commute. That'll especially be the case as you get good enough to make attempts at clearing the game, but aren't yet skilled or powerful enough to do it quickly.
It’s too bad Elden Ring isn’t on Switch. That game also worked well for many short sessions for me.

Oooh, I wish I hadn't gotten it for PC first, along with a truckload of mods I can't imagine not using now, cuz that would've been fun.
I would recommend checking out Streets of Rage 4 or TMNT: Shredder's Revenge if you haven't already.
Already did SoR4 on the PC as well (loved it), but I'll consider TMNT.

Iffy. I haven't played CoD in years, for instance, because I know I'm just gonna be bait for anyone capable.
Broadly though, it sounds like there's a large "Breath of the Wild" consensus here, although Civ VI has also caught my attention.

For what it's worth, though, there's no multiplayer component to Hades so that CoD might not be the best comparison. I haven't played River City Girls 2 but it's a side scrolling beat-em-up, right? That actually might be similar. If you like to go fast there, you should be fine with Hades too.
Also I saw you mentioned Valkyria Chronicles 1 & 4. I think if you liked FE:3H, you'd like the storytelling and gameplay here. VC is interesting, mechanically: imagine that every time you moved a unit in FE, the game switched to an over-the-shoulder camera mode where you'd control that unit directly, just for a minute.

Like with XCOM2, long load times and the time between turns -- especially late game -- can get pretty long. But, the art is stylized enough that it still looks good and it plays exactly the same as PC Civ. They also did an impressive amount of work on the UI/UX and making things work well with a controller or in handheld mode.

Valkyria Chronicles games are great. One of my favorite strategy RPG series. But I would not want to play it in small increments. That is a game where the battles can take along time, like upwards of an hour. Plus there is a lot of cut scenes and dialogue in between battles.

Bah! Figures. I was quite curious about those.

Oh, I mentioned CoD not because of the multiplayer but because of the general sense of modern FPS games, where I am simply not capable of moving fast enough to be half-competent in the game anymore.
Also intrigued by Into the Breach, even though I remember trying FTL and it beating the sh*t out of me (same developer).
Also wishing that Civ VI with all the fixins' wasn't $80.
Hideo Kojima's last couple games all work well as bite sized experiences. Both Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid V let you decide how much or how intense you want your play session to be by giving you a wide variety of missions of varying length to tackle at any time. MGSV in particular was a great lunchtime game for me because I could play a few side ops, get some better soldiers for my base while doing so, then shut it down when my hour was up. I was still making progress and having fun in the limited time I had. Death Stranding feels a bit more repetitive, but you can tackle hundreds of optional deliveries that require as much or as little time you have available. There are some long terms goals you can work towards as well if you just want to focus on gathering resources and building up your ranking at the various cities in the game.
The main story beats in each game can demand a good bit of time, but between those segments they're very free-form and forgiving with how you spend your time.
Oh, I'm sure, but I should've made clearer, we're looking specifically for titles I can play on my Switch during my commute.
To be fair any of them can sleep and resume without much trouble so any of them would work.
Went with Hades, FYI.
Once you're done with Hades, consider 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim for something completely different.
Also wishing that Civ VI with all the fixins' wasn't $80.
Just wait, it goes on sale on the eShop constantly. You missed the last sale by like a day, it looks like.
But you can see from the DekuDeals price history, it's on sale almost as often as not:
