The Some Like It HOT TAKES thread

I'll never forgive Kevin Spacey for his multitude of horrific abuses, and I'll also never forgive him for making it impossible to use that clip of him yelling "WRONG!" ever again. It was so handy, such as right now.

I say this as a huge fan of the first movie, it is nowhere near the best series of any span of time.

How dare you.

Hey, define "the series" as just the first movie and the tie-in comic and I'm right there with you about it being the best sci-fi experience in decades.

I cannot overstate how disappointed I was in Uprising though.

I knew Uprising would be bad going in so I was at least entertained.

I did too, but it still managed to disappoint me.

Robocop 3 is a better movie than Robocop 2.

Liar, Robocop never got any sequels or a live-action Canadian TV show, just that one cartoon.

Seriously. There's just a ton of misremembered movie misinformation out there. I keep on having to tell people, they only made three Die Hard movies and ended the franchise on a high.

I've never watched a Die Hard or a Robocop past the first, or an Alien or a Terminator past the second. People will try to argue that such sequels 1.) exist, and 2.) are not all that bad, in fact some of them are pretty good.

And without disagreeing with that premise-- after all, how would I know?-- my response is always along the lines of, "Cool. Is it as good as the first Robocop? No? Then I'm gonna watch the first Robocop again."

Yup, I've complained about this before but I hate the fact that nothing ends. Especial for movies or games. We didn't need another matrix, bill and ted, avatar, and probable a bunch more. Also there are only three thief games.

That actually is my hot take, more things should end. Endings are good.

Hell, some things should end a LOT sooner. And that even goes for things I like (for instance, I love Bob's Burgers but this is Season 14 and if they decided to end it now, I'd be fine with that).

Not everything has to end, but we definitely should be less terrified of stories ending. A lot of what makes some stories so good is that they freaking end.

The 4th Matrix was one of the best takes on revisiting a series that didn’t need revisiting, however.

I enjoyed the fourth Matrix, but did it redeem the series for the sins of 2 and 3? No. I'd rather watch 1 again.

Endings prevent milking a profitable franchise for more money though.

Cold takes, all of these. People have bemoaned endless Hollywood sequels and franchising for decades. Colder than a frostbitten freezer.

Here's your Hot Take: We should get 10 years of SEQUELS ONLY. ALL Movies have to be iterations on existing IPs. You're allowed to get as weird with it as you like, but you have to be able to draw the connecting red string somewhere.

All actors are at all times iterations on their previous characters. When Harry Met Sally 7 will form the connective tissue that results in Harry discovering Monstropolis and becoming Mike Wazowski. Tropic Thunder 3 is a stealth backdoor into Mission: Impossible 29. Franchises rendered unrecognizable after 10 years of all iteration all the time. The hellmouth opens and takes me, for I've created Hell on Earth, my work is done and I can finally slumber.

This is the "Hot Takes" thread, not the "Supplicating to Mephistopheles" thread.

That’s not a hot take, that’s almost where we are now.

Heck, you're right...

*cranks the "Years of Sequels" dial to 111*

We need generations, lifetimes of this mess for it to get to The Good Weird.

OMG how have we still not figured out how to slap someone through the internet?

Take some Nuke and you'll think you can.

Buffy's musical episode is the best musical episode.

It's also bad.

Give me something to sing about.

The local indie theater used to do double feature showings of Once More With Feeling (sing-along encouraged, lyrics sheets provided), Serenity, and sometimes also Hush. The jerks at 20th Century Fox (I think) sent them a C&D letter because Buffy wasn't licensed for theatrical presentations and they're jerks who hated fun.

I used to help put on showings of Once More with Feeling, and we definitely had to pay the studio for the rights to do so.

If only they'd paid you to give Giles, indisputably the strongest voice, a song that made any sort of motivational sense. "Oh, I'm worried that she's too reliant on my support." She's a goddam 20 year old who had to drop out of college because she f*cking died, and now she's burdened with guardianship of a minor and a mortgage, and she also averted the apocalypse 6 or 7 times so far, and there's no indication that there won't be another on this year! She could use some support! f*ck season 6 is utter sh*t. "But the musical's the bright spot!" No. It is not.

The musical episodes of The Magicians are better than the Buffy ones.

I stopped watching The Magicians because of the musical episode.

I've rewatched the Buffy musical many times and own the soundtrack for it on CD.

But Xena's musical episode is even better than Buffy's.

The musical episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds wins.

Spoiler:

Friends is fine.

On balance, it's not great, but it's not awful. It's fine. It's a great example of "White Noise TV," a show you can just kinda put on while you do chores, come in randomly in the episode, see a gag, go "Heh," and keep it moving without having missed anything.

While immensely popular, it is not as good as its Stans think, nor is it as awful as its haters say (I'd actually argue it's a show carried entirely by the comedic performances of its cast who genuinely do a pretty good job most of the time with deeply mediocre material).

It's fine. There are many worse (and better) sitcoms.
