Recommend me a video card

I think I'm finally ready to upgrade my GTX 970 (EVGA Superclocked) to a proper 1070 or something similar.

Here's the basic rundown:
Budget: < $400
Should have no issues with power (700Watt power supply)
Relatively typical PCIe motherboard for a gaming PC (Gigabyte GA-X99-UD4)
Primary use: gaming, Oculus VR

I'm strongly leaning towards a Geforce 1070 but I'm always surprised how many varieties there are. I'm also surprised that pack-ins (For Honor seems to be the popular one) aren't as consistent as I'd expect (e.g. Amazon doesn't seem to offer pack-ins) and I factor that into the price. Considering I really love my EVGA Superclocked, that's probably where I'm leaning but I'm looking for suggestions/deals.

I'd also consider getting a Radeon card but I'm much less familiar with their line and their plans for the rest of 2017.

Tom's hardware has their ever handy GPU hierarchy chart, should help give a sense of the Radeon equivalent options
*note has an autoplay video, annoyingly*

Generally you want to go at least 3 steps up to see a noticeable upgrade in performance, for a 970 that doesn't leave many options, in your price range the 1070 looks to be the only one you might be able to squeeze in if you can find a deal somewhere.

What's prompting the upgrade? The 1070's a good card, but personally, I don't know that upgrading to a 1070 from a 970 would necessarily be worth it. Like krev says, usually three steps up the Tom's chart is the minimum for an upgrade to be worth it. The 970's not cutting edge, but it's still a really solid card.

The 970 is the minimum requirement for the Oculus. The 1070 would be an upgrade for that. How much are the 1080's nowadays?

Timing is really prompting the upgrade more than the need for more power, although that is obviously the other driver. I've run into just a few games that really tax the 970 (Doom on my 2560x1440 monitor and Dirt Rally in VR). This is the time of year that I typically have the funds available to do it and it marks the two year anniversary of this PC. I'm hoping to get another two years out of it (to be clear, two more years of what should be a very good gaming PC) with a video card upgrade.

Balthezor, the 1080s run about $600.

I'm surprised Doom is giving you trouble, benchmarks indicate it shouldn't drop below the 50s at 1440p ultra detail. Any wonky graphics options (like 8x msaa) you have cranked up?

Yeah, admittedly. 4xaa, but it looks so pretty!
