Funniest part of this for me is that in the lead-up to the auction Jones had been talking like he was 100% certain that Musk or another conservative oligarch was going to buy everything and let him continue as normal. The Onion is possibly the worst case scenario for him because being publicly beaten by an indie comedy website has to be a blow to his ego, and any way he tries to attack them they’ll likely just lean into and turn into content.

So it’s turned out this WAS the plan, Roger Stone had apparently put in an extremely large bid to buy everything and was planning on just turning it back over to Jones, but The Onion reached out to the actual Sandy Hook families and won the auction with their support despite having a much lower bid.

They decided it was more important to them that Jones have his platform taken away from him than to get the maximum amount of money possible. Much respect for that stance.
