[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

I like subtitles but I HATE that video style of showing one word at a time. That needs to die in a fire. Who ever thought that was a good idea.

That is a pretty bad ass tear down. It screams like it was a setup. (on Fox news?)
Did not know CA was approaching the 4th largest world economy. Probably more because Germany/Europe is struggling. But still, wow!

this is covered under Umberto Eco’s Ur-fascism, which describes how fascists require paradoxical opponents to focus their frustrations upon- opponents who are both so overwhelmingly powerful and devious that they pose an imminent, insurmountable existential threat while also being so weak and ignorant that they can be easily conquered once the fascists are allowed to act as they see fit.

Add submarines, too (after a fashion):

Story for context.

The companies that have learned how to manage and distract Musk have managed to do some impressive things with his money.

If given enough time, he could ruin travel by horse and communication through soup cans.

Titan submersible maker OceanGate faced safety lawsuit in 2018: "Potential danger to passengers"

CBS News wrote:

The maker of the missing Titanic submersible, OceanGate, was the target of complaints in 2018 made by a former employee over the safety of the vessel's hull.

According to court documents reviewed by CBS MoneyWatch, OceanGate fired employee David Lochridge in 2018 after he expressed concern about the submersible's safety. The company sued him that same year, claiming Lochridge had breached his employment contract by disclosing confidential information with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration when he filed a whistleblower complaint with the agency.

...

Lochridge claimed the submersible needed additional types of tests to ensure its hull could withstand the rigors of deep-sea exploration. "Non-destructive testing was critical to detect such potentially existing flaws in order to ensure a solid and safe product for the safety of the passengers and crew," his legal filing claims.

Rather than address those concerns, OceanGate "immediately fired" Lochridge, the court document claim. The company allegedly gave him "approximately 10 minutes to immediately clear out his desk and exit the premises."

Yup, just another example of capitalist when profiting, socialist when tanking. How much profit did they make across the years through cutting corners and ignoring safety measures? And how big is the tax payer bill now for the rescue mission?

Don't get me wrong: I want them to live, and then I want them to pay.

I don't think the billionaires dying would prevent the submarine operators from paying.

We can have both.

Imagine the lawsuits aimed at them from the deaths of 3 billionaires in one go... Okay, maybe my other statement was wrong, this could financially eliminate OceanScam or whatever it's called...

Isn't a founder and CEO of OceanGate one of the passengers?

I do hope they live, but if the accusations of cost cutting safety are true then it's pretty poetic that the CEO would go down with the ship.

Submersible Billionaire's Stepson Is Posting Through It

More plot twists in this story than a bad Jon Travolta movie:

On Monday morning, Szasz tweeted that his stepfather was “on this submarine thoughts and prayers.” A few hours later he tweeted to Blink-182 band members Travis Barker, Tom DeLonge and Mark Hoppis that he was on his way to their show.

This move received some backlash, including from Cardi B, who went on an Instagram stories tirade. “People is like, ‘Well what is he supposed to do? Be sad at the house?’” she asked. “‘Is he supposed to go look for himself?’ Yes.”
While I might back Brian up for still attending the Blink-182 concert, his other alleged behavior is seemingly more concerning. The San Diego resident has been charged in recent years for online stalking and harassment, and allegedly threatened a “massacre” an EDM festival.
What all started with some rich people’s obsession with the Titanic has led to me reading a random man’s thirst tweets about OnlyFans creators—a poor use of my time, indeed. Hopefully these people can be found safe before it is too late, and less importantly, before I dedicate more of more of my time learning about inane billionaire stepsons.

And his next three posts in succession:

Yup.

By causing the premature deaths of a handful of billionaires, OceanGate has become the most successful climate change mitigation company in human history.

Is it wrong that I have "CEO murders other crew and passengers to conserve oxygen" on my submersible bingo card?

So, it turns out that Stockton Rush (CEO of OceanGate) stated in an interview that he intentionally avoided hiring older engineers with underwater experience because he wanted "fresh thinking" and "innovation". Apparently, being told that removing safety protocols historically purchased with blood was unpopular with folks who knew better and he wanted to skirt the hassle of having to fire them later.

Here's the thing about that though. I think it was Dean Martin who said that "good judgement comes from experience. And experience comes from bad judgement". And the thing about "bad judgement" is that it all too often looks like "fresh thinking" and "innovation" until it makes its appointment with reality.

This was not a fluke. It was inevitable. It was the inexorable collision between unearned self confidence and physical laws.

I had this conversation with my dad last night. Maybe the father and son teamed up as well - it could go a couple ways.
