[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

That's Hogwarts Legacy. The original lead on the game was outed as extremely anti-Semitic during development. I believe he left after the outing, but clearly they didn't care enough to clean up his work everywhere.

Wow. Any idea what game it is?

I'd assume it's the new Harry Potter Game

edit - Nsmike'd!

I thought polypusher was being sarcastic.

There's no obvious Potter stuff except maybe Owl Post I guess? I genuinely didnt know. Looked a lot like Gloomhaven Digital which Im playing now, so Im glad it's not that

While I am not surprised that game gets a but wait it gets worse moment that was not on my bingo card.

It’s allegedly a reference taken directly from one of the books, so it’s hard to say how much could have been changed given how bigoted the source material is.

Harry Potter and the Protocols of the Elders of Zion

A like is not enough.

So disappointing to see that game be given any oxygen in this community.

Framed slightly differently: the fact that the game advancing a highly problematic and bigoted worldview is reportedly well-made? That's not a selling point.

This is one of the "I think this has to be made up" images. What kind of dumb f*cker-ie would not allow references of events before 1970?

Well I am flabbergasted - apparently it is true

I come from what is considered a violent city in Canada. One year, among the 180k populace, 15 people were shot; across the entire state of Missouri that year, 15 people were shot by toddlers.

Missouri has a population of over 6 million people. You expand your sample size by a factor of over 30, you're bound to catch a few trigger-happy 2 year olds. Especially in the Ozarks, they don't play around down there.

The property as a whole has been telling on people when it was books, and then movies, and now the game. She's a terrible person who is getting bolder with her bigotry because she knows people will excuse her, because they've already done so for several years now because it was present in the books as ruhk mentioned?

People want to do the thing that makes them feel good, and find reasons why it's okay after. It's proof time and again that the majority of the general public will continue to engage with her racist content and transphobic rants because they want to like what they like for personal reasons. The net negative impact it has on others does not impact them, so they are totally fine allowing and enabling it to continue by showing continued support.

I don't know why that horn is being called a shofar. Shofar come in a variety of shapes. There are a variety of animal horn horns in various cultures. Shofars are used during Rosh Hashanah and not to rally troops. The actual attack happened in 1614, not 1612. That particular event doesn't even show up on most lists of medieval European attacks on jews, so someone really went looking. Also you would be hard pressed to find a year in the middle ages when there wasn't some kind of attack on jews. Also, Emperor Matthius dealt harshly with the perpetrators.

You all know plenty of reasons to dislike JKR and the Harry Potter IP. But antisemitic this is not. This is someone stretching facts to create anger.

There is plenty of serious and real antisemitism happening out there, people doing things like this does not help anyone.

I've been worried that if I speak out, it will be seen as performative. But honestly, I wanted to play this game so badly. I was ready immerse myself, it's right up my alley.

But you know what? I listen to my friends, both local and online. And they matter to me. They matter more than the enjoyment I'd get from a game. They made it clear how this would hurt them, in the conversations that went on here and elsewhere.

So for me, the choice was simple. I'm just gonna stick with the hundreds of other games I have that are not bigoted.

That way I can sleep better. I didn't do it to signal virtue. I did it because I have empathy and a conscience, and friends I'd like to keep.

Do the right thing. Try to live your beliefs. None of us make the best choices all the time but sometimes the right choice is clear.

I didn't do it to signal virtue.

What I'm about to say is not a criticism, just something that I've come to think recently about this term.

It's ok to virtue signal. This is a term, much like woke, that got co-opted to immediately be something negative. As though it could only ever be performative and not meaningful.

We virtue signal all the time, and it's not a bad thing. It is literally the only way we can even begin to assume that someone we know shares our values and is worthy of trust. It functions in exactly the way conservatives ridicule it for. It just does not have to mean that signaling is entirely empty and performative.

Signal your virtues. It keeps away the people you don't want, and attracts those you do.

Agreed. I've come to love the phrase "Deeds not words". Which, ironically, is performative until you do the deeds. It's ok to be caught trying to do the right thing.

A lot of nearby school districts elected people who hate public education. I ran for school board because nobody else was stepping up. If not me, who? In the end I don't care if it's virtue signaling.

Me too, but for different reasons.

Are you sure? While hyperfocusing on this on this one thing without any context (from what I hear, the more evil the goblin the bigger their nose), it may seem to be a case of focusing on the tree instead of the forest. Gotta remember that bigots and racists don't give a flip about nuance and something like this (from again a known alt-right developer even if he was ousted) but there's enough in the source material to prove otherwise.

Thank you. What the "Technically, it doesn't look like the picture of a shofar on the wikipedia page I just looked up" crowd doesn't seem to grasp is that this collectable is not a singular thing, but something that deepens the already pretty apparent antisemitism, and that's not something that can be nitpicked away.

There is indeed real and dangerous antisemitism out there, in particular in right wing efforts to normalize it, and downplay instances of it.

Isn't mav Jewish? While I agree with the forest and trees part, we should also be careful not to goysplain away his accurate technical details.

(I'm totally saying this as a private citizen, btw)

I think the technical details are a bit immaterial, because in this case it's just more coding on top of already ugly coding.

Oh absolutely. I apologize because I know coming in and goysplaining is not what I want to do but I just wanted to point out that one screenshot is not the only time that antisemitism has been brought up regarding Harry Potter as a whole. Again, I am not an expert but there have been other examples presented from the series as a whole outside of a screenshot with no context.

If I may, it seems that if you (general you, not anyone specific) are offending enough by this to vote with your wallet on a game, with a little more effort, you could do more to combat antisemitism by looking at the Antidefamation League's website or donating or volunteering to a cause run by a local synagogue.

I'm sorry, but this reads a lot like "Hey, you can take your performative actions and actually do something off-site so I don't have to see it here" as if the people protesting aren't already doing it. Just be mindful of what your statements are saying.

It seems like a lot of the times when someone here protests something the default response is to say it is "virtue signaling" or otherwise doing other arguments to shut down the conversation as if the people bringing up the issue aren't already doing the work. It's not a good look.

Over in the hog warts legacy catchall thread, Ruhk wrote the following comment:

ruhk wrote:

Rowling has publicly stated that she views the continued success of the HP franchise despite her activism as implicit validation and support of her beliefs, so regardless of what anyone may want to believe to make themselves feel better, continuing to engage with and support any aspect of the HP franchise actively enables and encourages the most prominent figurehead of the modern anti-trans movement, something that vastly, vastly offsets being careful to get the pronouns of your coworkers correct or donating $70 to a pro-trans charity.

Is there any record of this available? The game is a bit of a hot topic in the shop I work at, and having something like this to point to would be helpful.

Except, nowhere did I say that you should stop doing what you are doing. Nowhere did I say you shouldn't say what you want to say, nor to stop saying it on this forum. Nor did I label anything virtue signaling or single anyone out.

I am saying you can have much more impact by doing the "4 point switch". Not only are you taking away money from a bigoted developer and author, but you are giving money/time/support to organizations that fight them.
