[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

I want them to try something, anything. Asking for more money and singing on the steps of the Capitol as women prepare to die isn’t inspiring leadership.

So you want Dems to be more MAGA and Trump-like? sh*tting out poorly worded and researched EOs that give the base a chunk of red meat while immediately being challenged and shut down in court and ultimately doing nothing?

Maybe Dems should rile their base and have them storm the Capitol to show how serious they are. Except, because the Democratic base is non-White, they'd all end up getting shot.

And they were singing on the steps of the Capitol because they had just managed to pass the first gun control legislature in thirty years. Weird how people who do nothing managed to accomplish something.

DSGamer wrote:

It's more than marketing... Current elderly Democrat leadership may not actually believe in instituting some of the policies they claim to believe in. I know that's a hard thing to grapple with, but it feels like reality to a large chunk of their base right now.

Again, how in the f*ck do the Dems "institute the policies they claim to believe in" when they don't have enough votes in the Senate?

Or are we just back to the handwavy "do something"?

DSGamer wrote:

It's not "both sides". It's that even if you vote for the other side they don't even try. Calling them out on it is an attempt to get them to act, because otherwise there is literally no point to voting.

The Democratic House passed two laws to codify abortion at the federal level over the past year. One died in the Senate in February and the other in May.

So, again, it's not that the Dems aren't even trying. It's that they don't have enough votes in the Senate (hence the calls to vote in more Democratic Senators). I honestly don't understand how this is such a difficult concept for some people to grasp.

And while left might think they're calling Democrats out to get them to act (which just means having bills die in the Senate), they're really saying "All Democrats (except us) are either incompetent, corrupt, secretly Republican, or all of the above."

And that is just so very, very helpful and makes the rest of the party really and truly want to listen to their concerns and carefully consider their well-thought out demands to *check notes* "do something, anything" which is immediately followed by a very unsubtle threat that if their demands are not immediately and totally met that they'll withhold their vote to 'punish' the party or, more likely, traipse off to a third party so they can continue to feel the smug satisfaction of being politically pure and righteous (though completely ineffectual at passing meaningful legislation).

Want to be mad at someone? Be mad a the Republicans and their Christian Nationalist supporters for getting us here.

Cram the "woe is me, voting is pointless" bullsh*t because everyone is f*cking screaming that voting is the only political solution to what we're currently facing. You don't have to like it. You just have to accept the reality of it.

Focus that effort on doing something to get more younger people to vote--instead of telling them its pointless--because, again, they could literally outvote the boomers.

I've got a theory that they only try to pass stuff when they know they will be voted down. The very second after they get power of any kind its all "bipartisan" and "trust the process" and "our friends across the aisle". They come in pre caved, appeasement ready and with no will to fight for their base. No wonder no one turns out to vote for them, its always an excuse as to why they cant fulfill their campaign promises.

Got it.

Democrats are stupid, clueless, aged, incompetent, secretly all Republicans, and absolutely horrible communicators and yet they're able to seamlessly and effectively coordinate votes between hundreds of Representatives and Senators--each with their own agendas and objectives--on a wide range of issues to make sure they collectively never actually pass legislation that matters.

Except for "secretly all Republicans..." Yes? Why would that surprise you? We're not talking about a single individual when we're talking about the federal government. And getting a bunch of people to vote for something that you know isn't going to pass doesn't take much convincing. It might not be as coordinated as proposed, but like, "Let's put this thing up that won't pass, just vote for it" is not a big ask at all.

I know that there's a lot of griping over Democrats on these boards and not a lot about Republicans, but like... Republicans are a lost cause to us. We already all know how bad they are. Our only option is to vote them out, and it's just getting harder to do so.

When Trump was elected, I got in touch with several people I cared about and lamented it, literally in tears that night. To be fair to the people I talked to, I got some comfort from them, but one thing I heard that made me angry then and still does now was the common refrain of, "Oh, there are ways they can keep him from doing anything too bad."

Guess what? No there aren't. Every single thing based on propriety and tradition was absolute nonsense and disappeared on election night 2016, even if we didn't realize it yet. And it's still gone.

It's the same old story of the people who are getting their faces eaten by the tyrants and fascists saying, "Oh, I still need my eyes, surely they won't eat those. If they try, I'll just close them."

Democrats failed to realize what was coming, and failed to see it rising since Reagan. We needed protections for voting, protections against gerrymandering. We need a bigger SCOTUS, and need it now.

But nobody even tried, for decades. And that goes for Roe, too. Yeah, no mistake, Republicans robbed the museum. But the security guard was sleeping in the guard shack, too. And sometimes the guard had a pillow.

None of this is particularly new criticism, either. FFS the Simpsons used to joke about it way back in the 90’s.

The Big Win for the Democrats in the 21st century was the Affordable Care Act, which make no mistake, was an important step forward towards making healthcare more accessible (particularly regarding the elimination of pre-existing disqualifications for eligibility, as well as the implementation of somewhat-accessible government-subsidized coverage pools), but even that signature accomplishment for the party was essentially a reheated version of the 1993 Chafee bill.

Still important that it passed? Uh, hell yeah.

Also still too small a step that folks like me criticized roundly for the way that it actually gave insurance companies more power, not less? Also hell yeah.

And even now, both as a patient and as a healthcare insider, I've been quite dismayed to see that here we are around a decade later and I can pretty much say "I told you so". Have medical bankruptcies decreased? No. Has healthcare actually become more accessible? It's complicated. Has anything been done regarding out-of-control pharmaceutical pricing? Hell no.

So even the biggest and most impressive Democrat accomplishment is sadly only an accomplishment* -- emphasis on the asterisk.

Under the Obama administration, yes, there were many important Democrat/Obama promises kept, but many of them proved only temporary or came with caveats that ultimately rendered them disappointing in the long-term -- yes, in very large part due to the way Trump and the Republicans have either undermined them, eliminated them, or used them for evil instead of good.

But the promises broken are a path paved with the oligarchy's interests in mind and resulted in too little material improvement for the bulk of the US populace. No progress on minimum wage, nothing tangible done to reduce the influence of moneyed interests via lobbyists (hell, lobbyists serving the oligarchs' interests even ended up in Obama's administration), the big clean energy bill barely passed the Democrat-majority House and failed to pass the Democrat-majority Senate (in Obama's defense, the White House did push really hard to get this one through, but... oh well), general research funding saw no gains during Obama's tenure despite promises of doubling it, higher education costs kept right on skyrocketing, and I'm sure there's more but my head is killing me and I need to go to bed.

The short of it is that the Democrats have failed to do enough to support and protect the majority of the US population, because the party has become primarily a moderate-to-conservative party when it comes to all but matters of social issues. If political parties were beers, today's Democrats would be "Republican Light"; 80's-90's Republicans without the racism and religious zealotry.

Yeah, that's way the hell better than the nightmarish abomination that the actual Republican party has become, hence "Vote Blue No Matter Who". But it's not good enough. Not if we want to stop being an oligarchy and become a bit more of a collectivist society that actually gives a flying f*ck about caring for even the "least" among us.

@sarah taylor agate - just tell them you are carrying an AR-15 and they'll let you go.
Or maybe tell them you are going to a gun show to buy your underaged kid an AR-15...

In fact, I am all for women buying AR-15s to protect themselves from incest and rapists if they are going to have to carry the child to term.

The parent in that situation should emphasize never speaking to police.

My Twitter account was suspended because of this tweet, which breaks no Twitter rules.

Not knowing how long the appeal would be, I deleted it.

My account is now locked down for a full week. I can't tweet, retweet, or like anything.

Meanwhile, I regularly report accounts for violence or misgendering/deadnaming (which has it’s own category in the report function) and typically either get replies saying the tweet doesn’t violate TOS or saying that it DOES violate TOS yet the tweet remains up and the account active.

It is very important for people to know twitter isn’t a free speech forum (not that you don’t but just in general). It is a revenue making business that peddles heightened emotions to make money.
I think if more people really understood/believed that we would see a lot less “official” twitter accounts because it should not be used for offical communication. It is an entertainment venue

Because like is a toggle.

Farley I am *so* sorry. If it makes any difference to you, I actively boycott social media. I posted a profile self portrait on IG once under a diff name and now that one dumb ugly photo is what you get when you look up my personal name. I haven't posted anything new on facebook in a decade, I dropped the twitter/IG acct like it was a hot pan when I found that photo of me online.

Like these companies have absolutely no ethics or compunctions about crushing dissent. "Social" media is anything but. It is a sewer. They exist to harvest your data.

Honestly, same here. GWJ, Reddit, and some Discord servers are as close as I get to "social media".

That should be an Onion headline but I have given up on this darkest and dumbest timeline.

I stopped believing along time ago, but man I feel this so hard.

Religious trauma syndrome is a real thing. Maybe talk to your doc about it.

And there's some good #exvangelical content on Twitter

Twitter reversed the lock down over night and sent me an apology.

Credit where credit is due.
