[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

I don't know how many 4 millon are, but it sure seems like a lot!

Seems accurate. Dorthy was undocumented.

I have to disagree, 12% is an amazingly low result for a "believe something silly" poll. Usually it's something about aliens or angels and the numbers are up over 50%.

I mean, 30%+ of Americans don't believe in evolution. 12% is rookie numbers!

I think the poll geared to take a cheap shot at dudes, making them seem more racist and/or sexist than they are.

I saw a Twitter poll of guys claiming they could hit X number of Home runs in the HR derby, too. If you grew up playing sports and were any good at all, there is a feeling that you could run into a point or HR. You don't need to make it against a black woman to get guys thinking they could pull it off.

Nice sentiment and all but how does that help convince someone who does believe in God to behave better? It's pretty clear to me that Muhammad Ali was addressing a religious audience.

Religion provides the stick as motivation for morality. Be Good or Go To Hell. Want theists to be better? Get a bigger stick. Hellfire and brimstone from the pulpit.

It's why it's a common refrain to hear "atheists can't be moral because they're not afraid of divine retribution", which entirely misses the point that a non-theistic morality provides the carrot as motivation instead e.g. "being good is it's own reward".

Some religions work that way, yes. Some of them.

Certainly the big three Judaic religions do. Do the God based eastern religions operate that way, Hindu and Zoroastrianism?

He was addressing anyone who shelled out the money to buy his book.

Weird how a simple statement about love and caring can get twisted by so many.

Not sure if I mean religions or all the posts here.

Atheism is the water vapor in the clouds.

In all seriousness, more and more I think stick-and-carrot motivations are less and less the real story, and are just a fiction we tell ourselves. People may *profess* this consequence-based moralities, but then when you look at how they act, they don't act like they actually believe what they believe, which you find in secular ideologies too. They act like any society with norms and the need to affirm identity and draw the boundaries. They're just societies within the larger society, just like plenty of other social groups, regardless of their stance on questions of religion.

Nah. That's not how Judaism works at all. Christians just project their sh*t onto us.

That sums up modern Christianity so well. They have become the Pharisees they so love to deride.

Well my background and is Methodist and not particularly devout at that, and I know in church and temple teachings don't necessarily reflect plain language reading of the text but the big stick punishment wrath of god bits in the bible come out of the old testament. Isn't that the section that is incorporated from Judaism?

Ok, so I'm not enough of an expert to really expound on this here, but you're essentially looking at 2000 years of Christian interpretation of a section of the Torah that went off on a completely different direction in Judaism, after 2000 years of additional study there. The Christian interpretation is 'God likes to smite, be good or he'll smite you into hell'; roughly speaking, the Jewish interpretation of those passages is that 'wow, God used to be a real dick. Let's try to do better collectively to make the world better so that dick doesn't come around a-smiting again.'

(NB: this is a huge simplification, I am not a subject expert, and YMMV depending on which sect of Christianity or Judaism you're looking at)

That's one of the misconceptions that has arisen from projecting modern American Christian ideas onto Judaic texts.

"Old Testament = Wrath of God" isn't particularly accurate. If nothing else, the book of Revelation has enough destruction to outweigh the rest of the books.

For that matter, many Christian sects throughout the ages would have viewed the idea of the "Old Testament God" that was mostly about wrath and a "New Testament God" who finally shows some mercy as somewhat heretical. It relies on modern evangelical ideas about the trinity and how the crucifixion works.

I won't speak for the Judaic perspective, other than to note that they've got plenty of stuff in there celebrating the mercy of G*d without needing outside help.
