[News] Post a D&D Picture

Previous incarnations of Cleveland/P&C/D&D have had an image thread, to handle political cartoons and other image-based stuff that doesn't belong in the general post-a-picture threads.

If any of them spawn an extended discussion, please spawn it off into its own thread. Replies to non-picture replies should take the form of a link pointing to a post on a different discussion thread.

And I shouldn't have to say it, but the images still need to abide by the rules.

The sentiment that people should be kind and respectful to each other I am willing to perpetuate.

See, I read the sentiment there being that out political elite are completely uncaring to the suffering they create in order to gain power and maintain the empire of America. Invading other nations, murdering thousands, sending drones to kill innocents based on sketchy "intelligence," supporting dictatorships actively bombing hospitals... hey, at least they're both nice guys!

In my town, a man was killed attempting to save his truck from a carjacking last week: Police: Suspect in Kent deadly carjacking admits to shooting Jered Sperling

Shortly after, local police posted this on Nextdoor, with the comments you'd expect.

In the interest of accuracy, further down the article states:

Initially, Kainth told police he found the gun in the center console of the truck. However, police later discovered the gun had been stolen from a vehicle in Kent Sunday night.

Yes because it is totally worth it to shoot and kill another human being over what is likely less than $500 of your purse contents.

Sorry, I don't trust a screencap by someone who's down to 20% battery at 11AM.

Sorry, I don't trust a person who's clearly never kept the same phone for more than a couple years so the battery is a piece of sh*t and you're down to 20% battery by 11AM every day and have charging cables pre-installed in every location you frequent out of necessity.

Bitter old man.....

I am one of those types who buys used phones knowing the battery will be crap but am willing to live with that because honestly between home, work and a car charger I am unable to charge my phone for like an hour a day.

I hate this. The word “unemployable” makes me shake with red hot rage.

Yes, the above is partly true. What’s also true is that unscrupulous companies have suppressed labor in America for so long that they can get undocumented workers to work for the wages Americans often can’t afford to live on.

It’s not as simple as , “Work harder, lazy Americans” when Americans are being asked to work for wages below minimum wage, never mind wages FAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRR below a living wage.

As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened food truck kitchens, a thousand converted mill-lofts gray
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing, "Tacos and Roses, Tacos and Roses."

Yes, well, if "union" wasn't a dirty word in this country, this would be much less of a problem. And education, retraining for tech and service industry jobs, etc. ad inf. It's a systemic problem. It is not caused by immigration.

I don't blame the Latino man protesting against hate.

I don’t blame him, but calling Americans unemployable when many of them are the victims of the same crushing capitalism is super sh*tty.

I don't think i would call anyone inherently unemployable, but I also continually have less and less sympathy for the groups of people who live by some variation of "I know how to mine coal, and i refuse to learn how to do anything else. I demand you ensure that job continues to exist regardless of need, and destroy any industry that threatens it." I think that same refusal to acknowledge reality is what leads to blaming immigrants for the loss of job prospects because that's easier than admitting what you've been trained to do is no longer in demand.

and yea, the mostly successful assault on unions and the rise of 'right to work' is probably the number one factor that has lead to the wage crisis we find ourselves in.

The last sentence is the important one.

Undocumented immigrants in the US illegally aren’t taking away coal jobs. They’re getting paid under the table sub-standard wages for many jobs Americans *would* do if properly paid.

I know it’s a counterfactual, but imagine a United States with strong unions and strong labor laws. Where learning a trade and working for 40 hours a week meant you could take care of your family. You don’t think some coal miners wouldn’t be tempted to take up construction or landscaping or manufacturing to take care of their families? Especially if they knew laborers of all stripes in America were treated with dignity and respect?

Or maybe the reason they turn down retraining is because we don’t offer it meaningfully. We offer loans and force people to take on debt on the chance that the next career isn’t also wiped out by our anti-labor culture.

The world we live in is one where capitalism has destroyed labor unions and told people that their labor wasn’t even worth paying minimum wages. The captains of industry have denigrated honest work and convinced people Americans won’t do those jobs until it eventually became a self fulfilling prophecy.

Nobody can "take" your job. Your boss will happily give it to whoever will do it the cheapest. Otherwise, I've been worrying about resumes and interviewing like a sucker all this time, when I could just take the CEO's job.

To be fair, there's probably a lot of scope for you to approach the board and undercut the CEO's current paygrade.

Right. So not “taking”, so much as being “willing” to work in a country you’re not legally allowed to work in for wages that are far below the market level.

I support immigration. I support Americans needing to be nimble and adapt to a changing world. But right now most of the gains of the system are accruing to the wealthiest 1%.

Are we saying that our support for immigrants is so strong that we’re okay with a race to the bottom that ends with, essentially, Neo-Feudalism?

FWIW, I'm 100% agreeing with you, and support socialism and strong unions. Capitalism is the problem, not immigration.

A cursory glance at US history suggests that yes, very much that.
