Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire promises to pick up where that game left off. A direct sequal, it promises to take the statue of Caed Nua, previously conceived as an elaborate sidequest funded in large part by Kickstarter backers, and turn it into the centerpiece of the entire game.

“Eothas ... the god of light and rebirth was thought dead, but he now inhabits the stone titan that sat buried under your keep, Caed Nua, for millennia,” reads a press release. “Ripping his way out of the ground, he destroys your stronghold and leaves you at the brink of death. To save your soul, you must track down the wayward god and demand answers — answers which could throw mortals and the gods themselves into chaos.”

The campaign promises players the ability to travel by both land and sea, where they’ll encounter new cultures and environments. Non-player characters will keep their own schedule, which will lead to dynamic quests. Some old party members will even return.

Obsidian even alludes to the fact that players may be able to carry over their save files from the original game to “continue the story you began as the Watcher of Caed Nua ... and see how your decisions and actions in the Dyrwood persist in Deadfire.”

Fig goal: 1.1 mil. Lots of game details in the link.

Can't wait!

- Streaming tech for indoor locations. No more obscene loading times!
- Old save file affects the world!
- Weather system!
- NPC schedules!
- Environment look gorgeous!
- New character models and spell effects look amazing too!

Let's go!

I wonder if they will have a Conquest-like mode from Tyranny to tailor your choices for this game if you don't have the appropriate save file.

I guess I should really get around to finish Pillars of Eternity. That will be my goal for the year. Finish Pillars of Eternity and both White March expansions.

Edit:
And now that I've backed this, I definitely need to finish the previous ones.

All right, I'm in. Backer 900, apparently

I'm in the same space, Vector.

Steam says I have over 150 hours in PoE, but I haven't even finished the campaign! Now that does account for two unique game starts, but further it reflects my general quest & lore OCD with these types of games. I just HAVE to pour over every questline and piece of text.

I've been itching to dive back into the game since the Twitter teases for PoE2 started some weeks ago. I think that instead of starting all over again like I typically do, I'll just pick back up where I left off. Adjusting the Difficulty as needed if I need to reacclimate to the combat. If memory serves, the in-game Diary offers a great synopsis for catching up on the narrative beats.

I'm going to invest today. Now the only question is if I'll go for the base model or bump it up for that digital soundtrack edition.

Edit: In for the Soundtrack Ed.

Woohoo!

I want so much to play these games but I just know how much time I really have and I will never finish it...but I might back it anyway.

Interesting but I'm not sure I want to go the extra step of backing them on fig after the transphobic backer comments they allowed into the last POE. Though to their credit I don't see any tier that let's someone get anything other then their name in the game.

Backed. Hopefully this prompts me to finish the first before the second comes out. Then again I did the same thing for Divinity Original Sin, and, I'm only 20 hours into it, and 2 is just around the corner.

Aaaaaand backed. Love the look of some of the animation improvements they're doing and, really, I'm in for anything Obisidian puts out there.

Now the question is if I do a second play through of Pillars 1 that includes White March. (I finished the original, but not White March, with a Ranger who I'm not all that interested in revisiting.)

Saw thread. Backed before reading ANYTHING or watching vids.
Ok, now back to the top to see the details ;-P

PoE is one of my favorite games in recent years, no wait, ever.
Time to go all in on this.

Almost 600k!

I'm ok with the party size being changed to 5. 6 made encounters turn into mash sometimes but 4 restricts party composition.

Hell I own the first one and it's sitting on my pile and I'll still back this.

If you happened to back the first check your email, there's a discount coupon. They even let me apply it retroactively, yay!

^ I totally missed that I have that e-mail -- saw it here first. How did you retroactively apply it?

The email has a link, click it, log in to Fig, and then update your pledge. You'll see all the add-on items that were there before that you can add to your order, but if you followed the link, you'll have an additional one that is a $5 discount. Add it, and update your pledge.

OK, I missed that since I went to Fig from here before looking at my email. Thanks.

Note that you have to pledge above the $29 level in order to apply the coupon.

Meh, I'll just back at $45

Interesting. I never did get the email, but the $5 discount was listed as an item during checkout (which I applied).

If you have supported other games on Fig you can get a $5 discount. Sadly the one from PoE doesn't seem to stack.

Aaaand goal met in under 24 hrs.

Yippee!!

Woooooooooooo!

I'm champing at the bit for the new torment so when I saw pillars 2 I couldn't help back it. Even when they're flawed obsidian always makes something interesting as long as they have some freedom to breath. I'm really curious what they'll do with a sequel of their own, since, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the first sequel they've done that isn't a handoff from another studio isn't it?

Yeah, they've done sequels to other people's games but never their own. Another reason why this is so exciting.

Edit: Some info on the stretch goal and importing save files.

Hail and well met, elves. It's your buddy, Josh, with some info on subclasses and importing your character from PoE1.

Subclasses are similar to kits in 2nd Edition AD&D (featured in Baldur's Gate 2). Our focus has been to give a different flavor to a class through specialization. We want each subclass to do something cool and distinctive that also has a built-in trade-off compared to the base class and other subclasses. For example, if you remember Zahua from The White March, you may recall that he was a drug-addled/enlightened monk of the Nalpazca. If subclasses are funded, you may select the Nalpazca as one of two Philosophies (monk subclasses). The Nalpazca gain greater benefits from using drugs, but their Wound threshold is increased while under the influence.

One of the most popular ranger subclasses on the team is the Ghost Heart Lodge. All Ghost Hearts travel the wilds of Eora alone, their animal companions having died at some time in the past. However, the bond between the ranger and their companion is so strong that the soul of the animal remains tethered to the ranger through the Between. While a Ghost Heart does not have their companion available at all times, they may be summoned as a ghostly Spirit during combat for a short duration. This companion is not considered a Beast, so spells like a druid's Charm Beasts and Hold Beasts will have no effect on it, but a paladin's Abjuration can badly damage or even banish it immediately.

Now, on to importing your PoE1 character! At the start of Deadfire, you will have the option to import a special end of game save from Pillars of Eternity. This will import your Watcher and the choices that you made in the Dyrwood, including quest states, conversation choices, and how you personally dealt with your companions, friends, foes, and orlan babies. The save game is cross platform compatible, so you will be able to import from Mac to Linux, Gog to Steam, etc. This is the first time that the Obsidian team has the freedom to explore this type of cross game reactivity and progression, and we are very excited to add long term choice and consequence to Deadfire.

To address three common questions:

What if my dear friend Aloth "fell" into a Skaenite blood pool?
If you directly or indirectly got a companion killed or never recruited them in your save game, they will not be present in the Deadfire. However...

What if I never played Pillars of Eternity or I want to start a new game with different story states?
During the introduction to the Deadfire, you will be able to establish choices from Pillars of Eternity as though you had played through the game. Importing the save directly is not a requirement for establishing story states.

Am I still 11th/14th/16th level?
As you saw in our intro video, Eothas is very hungry and your soul is delicious. Your Watcher begins again as a level 1character.

This game better be what BG2 was to BG1. Anything less and I will be disappointed...

I am excited for it but was ultimately let down by Tyranny and even PoE to some degree. The only change that sounds good to me is subclasses. It looks like many stretch goals will be reached so I hope they go hog wild with subclass variety!
But please, please, please bring back monster xp or at least make it optional if players seek it out. Let me consume the story how I want if. If I want to trivialize the boss fights by grinding then let me. I always loved that about certain games where the goal was not to finally beat the toughest missions but to beat them by progressive increasing your handicap for bragging rights. ("I killed Diablo with my shield" "I won the Solaris Grand Championships in a Argus")

Pledged. Like another poster mentioned, the opportunity for Obsidian to actually iterate on a previously produced game for the first time has me very excited. Add to that a promised reduction in loading times (something that hit my mediocre pc hard in the later half of POE) and a chance to follow some companions from the previous game on a new adventure and this is a day one backing.

I'm on the fence with this. I enjoyed PoE 1, but I never finished it. I sucked at the combat and just lost fizzle. This looks pretty good though.

Will more than likely back it, but just going to wait a little longer. Need more thinking time.

I found the tactical combat in PoE 1 to be very good, but I didn't much care for the plot, up until the very end, where they blew my freaking mind.

I've said this before, but if they taken the last two hours, and pulled that back into the main game..... it would have been so much more interesting and motivating., For almost the entire game, I was going forward because that's what you do in adventure games, not because I cared much or because I felt like it was important to do so. It was obvious that my character wasn't actually suffering any ill effects from "going crazy", and that there was no particular rush to do anything.

But then, wow, they stepped up and knocked it out of the freaking park. The end of PoE1 is one of the most interesting premises/resolutions I've ever seen in a video game plot, and I'm really, really interested to see where they go with the sequel. It could be absolutely amazing.

I mean.... it was dull as dishwater, dull as dishwater, dull as dishwater... then holy-crap fascinating. I spent a long time thinking about the implications of the Big Reveal, and how the world might change.

Very much looking forward to PoE2. Gonna be a long wait.

I liked the journey getting their fine, but I think that's very fair criticism. I'm curious to find out, with a second run, if knowing the end game makes the early and mid-game more interesting.

#13476 for a Premium copy. I would have done it much earlier but I wanted to make sure my bills and finances were in order first.

I was tempted to buy one of those $1000 shares, but I could use that money better to pay mah billz.

It's already over 1.4 M (and I know we're going to look back at this figure and laugh). Up next, level cap increase and Russian language at 1.6!
