Gen Con 2017 planning thread

And I definitely want to get to see some fellow Goodjers this year! I've missed almost everyone the past two years because of scheduling conflicts; but I've deliberately left my evenings open this time around so I can actually see people!

My evenings are currently mostly booked with the friends I'm travelling with. I'll certainly try to stop by, though!

'Tis the way of Gen-Con, for many of us. I'll probably end up at the room one or two times in the course of the convention.

"Waiting for response from server"

"You Wish List has been submitted"

Just waiting for "Our Server has Crashed."

Edit: Man, Dresden Files games always sell out so quickly.

Edit the second: Almost all the others I got though, so that's good. Not sure I'll end up keeping them all, but they're at least ones I'm interested in, and I'm sure more will pop up as time goes on/Indy Games on Demand will be around.

And... got 3 out of 20 events. And one is a crafting thing, not a game. Oh well.

Guess I'll grab some generics, keep watching for something to open up, and hope for the best.

I got both of mine, but one was the concert and the other was a 70 person megagame.

(Plus some seminars, but those are mostly to remind me of when they are. Most of those won't sell out...)

I really want to do one of the big historical miniatures battles, but I can't commit to anything Thursday morning until I finalize my travel plans, and they're long enough I've got some other stuff going on in the middle of the other days...

For the ones I'm running, my Delta Green game is sold out, my Cypher System game has 2 slots left and my Predation game has 4. Of course, Predation isn't even out yet, so...

I tend to go for systems that have "alpha" and "beta" in the name, so I seem to get them pretty consistantly year-to-year.

Or I have weird tastes that most people don't share.

GenCon is about to be completely sold out:

INDIANAPOLIS (June 23, 2017) Gen Con, the largest and longest running hobby gaming convention in North America, will begin to cap 2017 badge sales if current trends hold. The company recommends that interested attendees purchase 4-Day and Single Day badges soon to guarantee entry to Gen Con 50. Those interested can purchase badges at gencon.com while supplies last.

“Gen Con has prepared to host the largest convention in its 50-year history,” said Adrian Swartout, CEO of Gen Con. “I would like to thank all the attendees who have decided to celebrate this historic year with us. To continue providing the best attendee experience we have decided to carefully control badge sales, and we will begin capping badges when we reach our internal attendance estimates.”

The convention has capped Trade Day and other individual badge types previously in Indianapolis, but has never limited 4-Day or Single Day badge sales.

That's incredible. It sounds like they are completely taking over Lucas Oil Stadium this year (and last year, too), so hitting capacity on those locations is crazy. If only they had hotels actually in downtown Indianapolis to support all of those people, instead of forcing rooms 15 miles away.

Wow. I don't think that's ever happens when I've been going.

And alas, no city has enough hotels for peak conventions, except maybe Las Vegas. And I'd rather be fifteen miles out than be in Las Vegas.

Anyone planning to bring a copy of Gloomhaven to the Game Room??
Also, we going to do a Slack channel again?

We're just under a month away! What panels and activities is everyone looking forward to? I'm trying to get into a Star Wars: Destiny tournament but sadly no slots are opening up.

Starfinder is big on my list. I'm GM'ing a few 1 hour sessions Thursday night and playing it Friday afternoon. I also managed to get a Star Trek: Ascendancy spot and one of the CMON Rising Sun charity slots. Pretty stoked!

GenCon countdown clock is ticking! 25 days left! My badge has arrived in the mail, and I'm stoked. In fact, I'm so excited I've already started my mental packing list. Got to decide what games I'm bringing with me, what I'm going to ship out in advance, and I definitely need to pick my hats and figure out their transport. Of course, the funny thing is that I still haven't finalized any kind of event schedule yet. This may be a year that I simply "wing it" the whole time and see where I end up.

My badge is Will Call, so I'll get to find out if that was a mistake when I stand in an enormous line on the 17th.

I've got a couple of panels lined up, and a big MegaGame on Friday night. Other than that I'll mostly be winging it.

One of my friends accidentally forgot to finish the badge purchase, which led to some panic. He's got a Thursday and Friday pass now, so he's good as far as those two days go.

Got my tickets as well. And since I went the slow-boat USPS route, and they had to go to Hawaii, I'd suggest everyone else who had them mailed should have them as well, otherwise contact Gen-Con about it.

So the key for me at will-call is that they're 24 hours during the con. So if you're getting in early in the morning, or late at night the night before, that's the BEST time to grab them. Otherwise you'll be in a hell of a line during the start of the day.

Especially given apparently Thursday is close to selling out, and all those still buying it people will be going through will-call as well.

Getting my GM badge, so that's something.

4-days badges are sold out. Saturday and Sunday 1-day badges are sold out. Thursday is almost sold out. There will be no on-site badge sales this year.

Going to be a crowded con...

Is anyone looking for a hotel room? I've got a reservation at:
HILTON GARDEN INN INDIANAPOLIS NORTHWEST
6930 Intech Boulevard, Indianapolis, IN 46278, UNITED STATES

Not exactly close, but it's a place to sleep at night, if that's your thing

I'm getting ready to cancel it, but wanted to see if anyone else wanted it first... two queen bed suite. Email if you're interested: [email protected]

So is there a secret handshake for this event? Been lurking here for years. Will be at GenCon and thinking about showing up to hang out.

The door is open. Come on up and say hi!

So, it's getting close, who will be around on Wednesday? I'll be driving out next Tuesday night, with the hope of getting there in time for Wednesday's hotel check-in.

I fly Monday and arrive Tuesday afternoon, so I'll be there Tuesday evening/Wednesday if you want to grab some dinner.

I'll PM you my contact info, in case you're interested.

I'm flying in on Wednesday morning; should be around the ICC by noon.

I'll be there early Wednesday settling in! Excited to pick up my badge and hopefully find some folks to play Star Wars: Destiny with! ^_^

Indianapolis loves GenCon

Last year, Visit Indy projected the event’s economic impact at just more than $71 million. Hospitality officials predict it could exceed $75 million this year, with some projecting almost $80 million.

If Gen Con’s economic impact hits that higher mark, it would be nearly double every other convention the city hosts but one—Performance Racing Industry. It would have an economic impact more than four times that of the Big Ten Football Championship at Lucas Oil Stadium and double that of the massive National FFA Convention & Expo.

Are we all using the gwj slack channel for gen-con communication?

What times will the GWJ room be open? Where on the 10th floor will it be? Never been to GenCon or a GWJ meetup before, but would like to swing by while I'm here!

Dunno the times, but it's right outside the elevator on the 10th floor of the Hilton, with a sign that says games with jobs on it.

I made it here, but I'm not logged into the forum on my phone so I didn't post earlier.

Yeah, I've been here for a while now, but literally not having a chance to look at things until now. Forgetting to bring a charging cable for my phone/tablet had nothing to do with it.

They're $20 at the ATT place in the mall.

Let me see if I can remember my password to the GWJ Slack channel.
