NCAA college football 2017-18: Official thread

Wisconsin will make the final four if they win out. Their schedule (or lack thereof) has kept them fairly invisible this year. They simply haven't had a big game (and won't, until the B1G Championship).

I think this is the consensus from everything I've heard...but there had also a lot of skepticism that they could beat Penn State or Ohio State in the B1G championship game. I think people have just had a hard time assessing that, since their schedule has been so light so far.

Maybe Iowa will look good against them. If Iowa comes out and plays a good game, but Wisconsin still wins, there will probably be a bit more adoration.

From what I have seen, the committee has done a pretty good job of placing teams into positions where winning out clears up the picture. Wisconsin won't get put into the final four until they win the B1G championship game. So the committee is placing them lower, but with a chance to move up.

I reacted negatively the first year wit the heavy SEC presence so early. But at the season played out and they knocked each other off, the rankings continued to make more sense. You can basically look at them and see what they are doing.

I'm still not a fan of a four-team playoff, and having committees choose teams is still the weakest way to fill playoff brackets. But the committee has done a fair job so far. And until we expand the playoffs enough to give automatic bids to champions, whether that be Power 5, or for all 10 conferences, this is as good as we are going to get.

We need more teams, but I think the committee has done a good job of valuing strength of schedule so far. I'm definitely enjoying this crazy, unpredictable year.

Who would have thought that in such a crazy year on the field, the first CFP poll would (IMO) be fairly spot-on and controversy free?

While having 2 SEC teams, even!

Yep. They are (most likely) the two best teams... right now. It will also change.

edit:wrong thread sorry!

To prove collusion doesn't Kap just have to show the judge a list of these scrubs getting signed?

Wrong thread, but to collude two groups who are supposed to be in competition have to explicitly discuss what they're doing. "Concious parallelism" is perfectly legal.

Also: IANAL.

Yeah, it's not collusion. It's weak minded owners that don't understand that they are dragging this out longer and longer and making it worse and worse for themselves. But I don't think they needed to all agree are set punishments for team that sign him. It's the same old boys network just doing what they do.

They didn't collude to keep black head coaches out of the league, either. They were just racist men of privilege that needed to be forced to do the right thing. RIP Art Rooney.

Week 11 viewing guide!

Must watches, acc to SB Nation, are:

Washington-Stanford, 10:30 p.m. Friday
Michigan State-Ohio State, noon Saturday
Georgia-Auburn, 3:30 p.m. Saturday
Notre Dame-Miami, 8 p.m. Saturday
TCU-Oklahoma, 8 p.m. Monday
.... and probably need to keep an eye on Alabama-Miss State (7 p.m. Sat) just in case.

That's a pretty solid lineup!

Who would have thought that the FSU / Clemson tilt (justifiably) wouldn't be included in this excellent lineup.

Sigh.

As it should be...

You may remember that I complained about UNC making the argument that "Well, since these fake courses were open to any student, we can't be punished for allowing our athletes to take them" in order to avoid NCAA punishment.

You may also remember that I said their accreditors should nail them to the wall for it. Essentially they're arguing that, as an accredited institute of higher education, they're okay with allowing fake classes, where among other things the assignments are graded by a secretary (except when said person decided not to read, just to give a grade). Well, UNC's accreditors may actually be doing their job.

So, UNC is risking its whole academic enterprise in order to keep its teams eligible for NCAA play. Dumb, dumb, dumb. The president and entire athletic department of this university should be fired.

EDIT: More in-depth, non-Deadspin article.

Come on, Kansas!

I might wear blue tomorrow.

I was kidding.

Holy crap, 538 has picked up my favorite current sports story!

Yeah, Texas isn't doing itself any favors lately. Maybe once Mack gets the AD position!

Meanwhile, our AD is about to make the defining hire of his tenure.

Firesloth, I will be a YUUUGE Notre Dame fan, just for today. There is no circumstance on this Earth that would allow me to ever root for scUM.

Seriously, even if somehow FSU pulled off a miracle and beat Clemson today, leaving Miami as the only real chance for the ACC to make the playoff, and even if the ACC being left out allowed THREE SEC teams to get in I would root against the Canes.

So, Fighting Irish, please curbstomp Miami, their stupid bird and their stupid turnover chain. Turn your running backs loose and knock these cocky f*****s back to irrelevancy. Their eFans have returned with a vengeance and must be knocked back to surfing porn.

Do it for me. Do it for college football. Do it for Touchdown Jesus. But, most of all, do it for America.

all the +1s to this. The "U" must LUUUUUUUSSSSEEEE

Ha ha ha no.

SACS had its chance and blew it. Accreditors are the biggest joke in higher education, ahead of the college football playoffs, the NCAA and Univ of Texas football.

So much for Ohio St vs Mich St bring a good ranked matchup

Yup. I checked the score a bit ago to see if I should tune in.

Umm...what's going on in Auburn?

Total shocker! And Auburn has led since early on. I think UGA has only scored a field goal since the first quarter!
