Gamers who play musical instruments

Well another Fathers Day, another bass.
This time I got an opportunity to get a Fender MIM Jazz Geddy Lee edition. Being a Rush fan I was ecstatic to see it available for $825 CDN on our local marketplace.

Here's a family photo and a nice B&W from a friend

Very nice.

I read someplace that the prices of used instruments has collapsed post covid. I might have to check Reverb.

I can understand that. Everyone who bought an instrument to learn during covid is now selling off their stuff since life is back to what it used to be.

I wanted to share this latest video we just dropped of our metal cover of "Rock the Dragon" from DBZ.

This was so much fun to shoot and hilarious to boot.

I don't even care for dragonballz and that's fun.

I thought I just sucked at slapping until i restrung my bass.

Fresh strings make best slaps for sure. Brightness helps the pop which is the first to go.

If you look up instruments (or pedals, or amps, or whatever) on Reverb, you can see a historical graph of what stuff sold for, and it's absolutely trending downwards. I managed to dump an electric I disliked and took a Boss guitar synthesizer pedal in trade just because that'll be easier to get rid of, and my 12-string a friend wants to buy. I've been following multiple guitars on Facebook Marketplace, and they are sitting for a very, very long time. It's a good time to be buying used stuff.

Hmm maybe now is the time for that ST Vincent guitar I've wanted...

Prices definitely going down. I have a Tele and a Martin Road series i want to sell and the market is flooded.

I've been poking at learning the main riff to the Sonic Youth track Kool Thing but hit something of an early plateau in the form of the bend being really hard on my thick acoustic strings. Then while fiddling with my bass VI and remembering how damn floppy the the low E string is I had a revelation! And now one mildly scary tuning session and an octave pedal later and I can pull the bend off slightly better while still thinking "Really need to fix that damn jazzmaster..."

So continuing my pedal obsession . . . I picked up a couple Caline pedals on Amazon on Prime Day, just to check them out; they're cheap Chinese pedals and I'd seen a few videos where various guitar geeks had talked about how they seemed surprisingly good for the price. I picked up two; the Andes double-sided Overdrive and Boost (I believe it's a knock-off of the well-regarded MXR Timmy), along with the Osmium distortion. Both are ~$40-$50 or so, they're all-metal enclosures so they feel solid, and . . . man, the overdrive sounds fabulous. I've never messed around with the real pedal it's emulating, but this one's this dirty, sludgy almost fuzz-ish levels of dirt, and it's just great. I mean, it's badly designed in that there are separate switches left to right for Drive, Voice (switching whether the OD or Boost comes first), and Boost and I guess if I had size 5 feet it'd be easier to not double-hit switches, but it really does sound good. Not as fond of the Osmium on its own, but it really crunches up running a Tube Screamer into it.

If anybody out there is intimidated by the world of pedals and the potential expense of it, I'm pretty impressed so far with these two pedals, and I'm going to start grabbing a few others. I might replace the bigger Andes with the Pure Sky overdrive that's built into it, it's like $30, and is totally just a great sound.

I have heard great things about the brand Flamma as well. JHS even made a show about them:

I have a Flamma looper with a built-in drum machine I bought used off a guy, and, yeah, it's very functional and does a bunch of stuff, is really nice. I've also heard good things about some Joyo pedals, and they're in that same "better than they should be" price range with Caline and Flamma.

I have the Caline High Chief wish-listed, it's their King of Tone clone, the price is actually ridiculous for how close it gets.

And in today's episode of Pedal Obsession Theater, I wasn't incredibly fond of my reverb pedal (an Earthquaker Astral Destiny); it did this really cool series of weird octave reverb things (I mean, it's an octave reverb, I knew what I was getting into) which were fun, but I wasn't using them much, and the vanilla reverb was just kind of boring. Because I did wind up selling off my 12 string, I decided, obviously, that money was now free and I could do whatever I wanted with it because unassailable logic, so I bought a Boss RV-200. It has a dozen different reverb settings with a variety of tweaking options, there are no digital menus to hunt through, and there's a super-simple numeric dial that lets you set the time of the reverb from .1 to 10 seconds. It's incredibly easy to use and sounds so good on so many of the settings, and it's impressed me enough that one of these days I'm going to sell off a few of my unused pedals, and look at the DD-200, Boss' similar pedal for delays. I like my delay pedal (a JHS Lucky Cat, it's sparkly and pink, I have to like it), but, man, this reverb pedal is just so good.

Anyone have a drum pedal to recommend?

I've been looking at this one for awhile now. Glad that you like it a lot!

I use an RV-6 which is a true journeyman pedal, perfectly delivering everything I want in the way of reverb (which granted, isn't much more than the basics).

My friend who plays a lot of clone hero drums on his e-kit likes this one a fair bit:

He has the double pedal version for metal but I assume that shouldn't matter too much

Honestly, one of the best things about it is the UI on the thing is just so damn easy. 12 clearly labeled settings for types of reverbs, a visual indicator of how . . . reverb-y you can make via the time dial, a few more knobs to tweak the sound, and a distinct button to really easily move between 4 presets, and there's just some way to do a whole bunch more I'll never use. I have this stupid SY-200 synthesizer pedal I just took as part of a trade to get rid of a guitar, and it's in a box getting ready to get dumped on Reverb for whatever I can get for it because (A) I don't need my guitar to sound like a spaceship, church bell, or accordion thrown down the stairs, and (B) the menu system is a pain in the ass to hack your way through the different settings. Just having the reverb pedal be so easy to use is such a huge win.

I picked up this one from a guy on Facebook Marketplace several months ago, and it has a bunch of built-in beats along with the looper (which is honestly kind of clunky). It's a better drum machine than looper IMO.

Perfect - that's exactly what I was looking for. Wishlisted!

Wait hold on, what kind of drum pedal did you need though? I can't tell from the context and for some reason my brain is slightly hung up on this in a way where I feel like someone asked me for wagon advice and I suggested a radio flyer when you meant what type of buick roadmaster you should pickup

Sorry, a guitar pedal that does drum beats:)

I've been low-key obsessed with Godin acoustic-electrics for years; I'm a big fan of singer-songwriter Martin Sexton and have been seeing him for more than 25 years, and, a couple years into seeing him, he started using a Godin, and just the sound of it and how easily he could tweak the sound on-stage so easily. A guy on Marketplace was selling a Godin A6 Ultra, which not only has the acoustic transducer but a humbucker as well, and the ability to blend together the electric and acoustic pickups on the fly with the sliders on the top of the guitar (distinct sliders for acoustic and electric pickup volume plus EQ), and the sound options are fabulous. The neck is what sold me, feels phenomenal.

The acoustic sound on this thing plugged in is about as good as I've ever heard, and, based on the design, it's effectively feedback-free. Also, the koa top is just stunning.

Oh that is a gorgeous thing. I am a huge fan of Godin’s stuff and one of these have been on my “want but should’t” list for years now. Enjoy it!

That's the sort of acoustic I was looking for before I got my Yamaha! Which I am extremely happy with actually so it worked out but still maybe some day. I will say I'm bummed you didn't opt for the Jortar instead

Look at all the sexy denim...

(I'll be honest I don't hate it)

"Hear me out . . . what if we had an elegant, clean design for a beautiful acoustic guitar, but made it look like Springsteen's butt on the Born in the USA album?"

"BRILLIANT, SHIP IT!"

(I'll be honest, I want to burn it)

I recently was asked to audition for an 80's cover group. It was my first ever audition and it is a genre that I don't really do, but it was fun anyway. I played through three songs and pretty much just kept to my plan to keep time with the drummer and play the root of the measure. It went well enough but the group decided that they were looking for someone with more experience. That was fine. It would have been a huge time commitment and I am not sure I love the 80's enough to put that much effort into learning Bryan Adams and Cyndi Lauper songs.

It did, however, get me more motivated to work on techniques that I have mostly been ignoring. I am mostly a jazz bassist so I play a lot of walking bass, root-fifth, arpeggios, and quarters on time. I don't do a lot of fast eighths, sixteenths, or syncopated rhythms. So I am working with a metronome and playing along with YouTube now.

This also got me thinking about how I really need to attend some jams to get more experience playing in ensemble. I am looking for ones in my area that line up with my schedule and coming up pretty empty.
