I was thinking of Eastwood guitars not Eastman and was surprised at how pricey they had gotten when I looked them up. TIL there's an Eastman guitars I guessed

Started playing some funk lately and have developed a new appreciation for how, well, funky it all is.

Nina Simone Save me

Herbie Hancock Chameleon

Herbie Hancock Watermelon Man

So much fun.

I think the closest things to Funk I have personally ever worked on are Uptown Funk and David Bowie's Let's Dance.

The song itself doesn't really count as funk in my book, but Maggot Brain by the Funkadelics has to be the most underrated guitar solo ever recorded IMO. Also, those chords are fantastic to play as a backing track and just wail away soloing over.

George Clinton recalled the recording session clearly, saying, “Eddie and I were in the studio, tripping like crazy but also trying to focus our emotions." He continues, "I told him to play like his mother had died, to picture that day, what he would feel, how he would make sense of his life, how he would take a measure of everything that was inside him and let it out thought his guitar.

That reminds me I don't think I ever posted how my attempts to fix my guitar went. I ended up getting it to work for a second but I think the routing on the body for the middle pickup is too shallow and is shorting out everything. So time to do some hopefully not disastrous routing on it when I get a chance. A friend who is some kind of weird instrument savant also offered to help so if I can get ahold of him between jobs he should be able to help fix it up. In the mean time I've been futzing with my Bass VI, and god do I love that janky thing. Floppy low E string and all

Good luck with fixing the gremlins. The joys of being a hobbyist.

I'm bummed with myself I didn't get a guitar kit from the only company in the country that was importing them before they closed down. I'd love to do a build.

And I'm also feeling the call of a Bass VI. Such a cool instrument.

Thinking to pick up some conga's. Always loved the sound and I have been drumming for years. Picked up a Djembe last year - but like the sound of conga's way more.
Any insights are welcome. Looking at some Meinl starting set now.

My wife came home with a Casio CTK-2080 keyboard yesterday. It was free and figured if she didn't take it, it would go into a landfill somewhere. I don't know how to play keyboard, but this should prod me to learn.

It's a great thing to toy around with. Having said that if you do pick one up I'd suggest the bridge and tremolo recommended in this blog post: https://mmguitarbar.wordpress.com/20...

Not required but the bridge does do a lot for play ability

I did pickup somewhere that the Mastery upgrade is a good idea, but I wasn't sure why. That article is great, thanks.

I have been playing a lot of Curtis Mayfield lately on my basses and finding that the crisp cutthrough you get with the Stingray is ideal for those funky runs. My Fender Precision is still the easiest to play, but I am loving getting acquainted with the virtues of all three instruments (Fender P, Fender J, and Stingray).

So there was a really good sale and I had just gotten a bonus and I bought a new guitar.

I was really hesitant to spend that much, but I have to say - I am in love. This is my first american made Fender, and while I am super happy with my MiM strat and tele - the difference in quality is shocking. This thing is an heirloom. It's just a joy to play.

Oh I was looking at one of those! Little out of my price range as I already have one very nice guitar and than cheaper ones I can fix up as needed. Given that this is but one of many hobbies I don't spend enough time on. But damn I'm a sucker for a good jazzmaster.

It was on sale for $700 off - so i kind of felt like it was a no-brainer. I have been looking at those since they released the strat version, and apparently the Jazzmaster is the best reviewed model yet(with upgraded pickups and a larger cavity).

Glad I am wfh today so i can noodle around!

Ibanez and yamaha have some well liked thinline acoustic electrics I might pick up in the next year or so. Need to see if there's a guitar center with them in stock around here.

I'll check the one up in gladstone and let you know if I see any. I was just at Bentley in Parkville and they did not(i shop there a lot and my daughter takes lessons there).

Much appreciated! The web page said that one of the ones in the area does, but that doesn't mean much in my experience. And I didn't see any at Big Dudes last time I went which is where I prefer to buy if I'm not ordering something weird off the internet

Ha, I haven't been to big dudes in years! I keep meaning to go and walk around, since I work downtown anyway.

Great selection of electrics, fair bit of acoustics, not much for basses. Decent drum and pedal selection though. I think at this point most of their business is in PA systems

Nice! I havent tried it myself, but check out Pianote, its sister site Drumeo is one I quite enjoy for its frequent content and great teachers

Actual conversation
Bass teacher: there are two immutable truths of bass.
Me: yeah?
Bass teacher: you set the key and the tempo
Me: huh. I thought the drummer keeps the tempo
Bass teacher: sigh. There are two immutable truths of drummers
Me: yeah?
Bass teacher: they have one job and can’t do it.

All drummer tempo jokes should come with a disclaimer.

I have sent my baby off to be fixed by the weird instrument savant. I'm paying him in a nice meal so I expect it to be done sometime this year

Been looking at reverb pedals for awhile and the ones that sound amazing are usually in $300 range. Until I found the Flamma brand. Excellent sounds for very few dollaridoos. Anyone have any experience with them?

I mostly play acoustic out of convenience. I'd like to play with my electric more often so I'm working on updating my setup to make it easier to pick up and play. I have a very small room with very limited outlets so that is a consideration. I have an old 40W Peavey amp in the garage that I hardly ever use because it's too big and when I do play I'm almost always wearing headphones.

So, I was thinking about picking up a Boss Kitana Mini as it's much smaller and battery operated. I would like to eventually get a new multi-effects board like the Boss ME-80 which can also run off batteries. I currently have an old Digitech RP150 that works fine but needs to be plugged.

My question, if I got the Kitana Mini and an effects pedal like the ME-80 and I did want to play through the amp sometimes instead of just to headphones, will the amp be able to handle the all effects from the board or will it be too overpowered? Does anyone have any experience with the mini and using pedals or effects boards with it?

Not something I have direct experience with but I would suspect that you wouldn't be playing at volumes high enough for it to matter? As for the Boss Katana I know people who swear by the full size one and I've heard good things about the mini. I can vouch for his amp:

Had it for like, 6 years and I've never had an issue with it and my more serious guitar friends all like it a lot

I haven't tried the mini, but it's just an amp like any other, a make loud machine. If it sounds weird, turn off the preamp section of ME80, but I doubt you will have trouble with it.

I looked at that one too, people seem to really like it. The only reason I leaned more towards the Kitana was cost really. My thinking is the majority of the time I would just be playing with headphones straight from the effects board and the amp would be just for when I want to play "loud". Therefore, I was trying to keep it as cheap as possible without it being a garbage amp if that makes sense.

Have you tried the Orange 12w amp? It sounds really good for such a small foot print.

Yeah that makes sense! I got mine refurbed from Amazon so it was like $250 total. It does come in with some built in effects along with the various amp models though honestly I've never been all that fond of the effects given that there's no way to really dial them in without hooking it up to a PC at which point I can use full modeling software. I think I've never really dived down that rabbit hole
