$8500 ??

Splorking my coffee over my keyboard over here.

Thanks man!

Step 2.. finding somebody who is willing to pay that amount.

For one

I think I might have a bas problem. A friend heard I was looking for a bass a while ago and offered me a deal on another one. Since it’s substantially different from the jazz and precision fenders I have, I was interested.

It’s a 2011 34H stingray in mint condition. Still has the plastic on the pick guard and the tag on the neck. He bought it for his wife but got to keep it in the divorce. New it’s $950 msrp and generally around $850 at retail.

He wants it out of the house for $400.

Took the shortest route - phoned the foundry who made them. They are very intrested, will talk with them soon.

Wow, the worst case of GAS I've ever seen. But that is different to what you have, and the price is right.

The worst part is the enabling from my bass teacher.

He told me “everyone needs a p, a jazz, and a stingray”.

Guess I need to go shopping.

Non-players don't understand that if you're an enthusiastic guitar player there's so much variation that you can have a whole bunch and not have all the ground covered.

Sort of spit-balling the 5 guitars idea for myself.

Strat
Gibson variant (SG or Explorer for me)
Tele
Something modernish in Drop D
Something with P90s (SG Special)

This doesn't even include an acoustic.

You can also have so many guitars that have different setups that you can have a dozen without two that do the same thing.

If you like Strats you want one in E flat and one in D
Open tunings
If you record you may want one with Nashville Tuning
A Baritone

And drop D flat! I think there are some metal bands that do that.

Drop B for prison sex...

This is my latest drool worthy object I am currently stopping myself from acquiring.

Magneto Starlux

Despite the luxury looks, the price is reasonable (sub 1000).

Bass players all need a precision for anything written before 1975, a jazz for slap and tap, and a stingray for active pickups to cut through with that thump when you want to solo over a drum set.

Beyond that, you need a 5 string for metal and funk and a fretless for classical or art rock.

That and a honking big amp.

I play a lot of metal so I'm typically in D standard, though I like a lot of songs that are in E, and then again it gets down to C# or C standard sometimes. Unfortunately I've only got one guitar so it gets retuned probably more than it should! Guess I need to go shopping along with Mixolyde...

Or you can just play Jukebox Hero all the time

Ooo looks like a version of the parts master I made myself as designed by someone that knows what they are doing:

Whoa. You built that!? That is awesome!

It was all Warmoth parts so aside from a bit of drilling to get the pickguard in there wasn't much actual woodworking done. The impressive part was how much it cost. Too much.

(About $2,000 all told, but I went all out on the parts as it was towards the end of 2020 and I wanted to do something excessive for having made it through the year)

What are your pickups and does it have an active preamp?

Pickups from the neck down:

Cool. So passive pickups all around. Interesting combination. Two single coil and a split coil.

I know next to nothing about guitars, but it would be all manner of overkill for a bass.

This is basically how I roll - I've accumulated quite a few guitars, but they all serve different purposes!

Oh don't worry I have a Bass VI and a J Bass I intend to do similar crimes to on a long enough time scale

I briefly had a SUB4 that I was planning to mod to hell and back with a new humbucker, preamp, tuners, and a high mass bridge, but the neck never got right despite a setup, so I took it back to Guitar Center.

Well shit. Now I have a stingray.

It’s lovely but it’s also every bit of 11 pounds.

I'm surprised you had the issues you did with the SUB4 I have only heard good things about Sterling instruments. Really want one of those ST Vincent guitars they make someday.

And as for weight I borrowed a friends Les Paul for a bit after running away from home and god damn that thing was too heavy. Part of why I made sure the Jazzmaster I built was semi hollow.

I am sure it was because of Guitar Center. That place used to be awesome, but it's basically the Bed Bath and Beyond of music stores now.

I did a little research on Sterling and it looks like all of the stuff coming out of Indonesia is made in the massive Cort instrument factory. That, ironically, includes the Squire stuff being sold under the Fender label. Folks like to shit on the Squire stuff, but the recent stuff they have been making just above the Affinity line is actually pretty good. All said though, I still think paying for the Mexican Player Series stuff is well worth the extra dough. Particularly if you can get a deal on the used market like I did.

The Ray34 I picked up needs a setup as well. Massive fret buzz on the E all the way from first to 12 fret. I tried a bit of a truss rod adjustment, but that is affecting the action on all the other strings, so I think I will need to take it to my 70 year old local luthier who I got to do my jazz bass. He's not cheap ($100), but he does great work.

I plugged it in and phuqed around with it a bit and I totally see why it is so popular. The tone comes in clear as a bell with that active Humbucker and the three channels give you some serious flexibility in how it sounds. You can make it anything from a down comforter to a scalpel. It is about as close to the One True Bass as you can get, but I am still very happy to have my P and J "unicasters" as they do their jobs exceptionally well.

The bass I got (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B091BJL546...) needs a set up for sure but I also plan to replace the neck anyways and I am not planing to do any recording or whatever and the buzzing doesn't really bug me.

I do need to get my guitar in for a proper set up but I miswired something and want to fix that first. Jazzmaster typically have a weird second circuit that let's you switch between a lead and rhythm sound on the fly, I swapped it out so the second set of controls works with the middle pickup instead so that can be mixed in separately from the other two. Right now though it lands on the same pot as the rest of the pickups due to a testing issue I never fixed so volume is also effected by the normal volume knob. The reason for all this is that the other two pickups are fairly dark and mid to low end focused, and the middle one is oops all highs, for when you need that, and this way it can be mixed in as needed for more fine tuning

Yeah. The Affinity is definitely a Cort instrument. Particularly at that level, they can be pretty inconsistent. I have seen some EXCELLENT ones right out of the box and others that practically needed a luthier to rebuild from scratch. If you got a good one, you have a good one. One very good reason not to buy one online if you can help it.

I am pretty handy and thought hard about building my own bass, but figured I wanted to start playing before I dove into that deep end.
