This just popped up in my Facebook feed from four years ago:
Cripes, are the Chargers moving or what? So lame. Just announce it already as this possible PR stunt as leverage crap is lame.
The NFL's approach to drug and alcohol abuse is just patently reprehensible; these are people who need support, and cutting them off and isolating them from the structure of team sports is completely denying them the structure and community they need in order to deal with addiction. ...
To folo up on this point, SI had a great story about the rise and fall of Joseph Randle:
(note: the dramatis personae in this section are Cowboys owner Jerry Jones; former Cowboys DE Charles Haley who's now a player liaison with the team; and Avina Rodriguez, Randle's now ex-girlfriend)
One person who spoke with Randle during this time says he “had no reasoning ability.” Another close associate says, “I’d look him in the eye, and he just wasn’t the same guy. I was looking into his soul like, Joe, where’s the guy I know?” Rodriguez recalls Randle receiving a reassuring 30-minute call from Jones. “I remember him getting off the phone—‘Everything’s gonna be O.K.; he understands where I’m coming from.’ ” But that Sunday the Cowboys left Randle off their active roster for a home game against the Seahawks, and the running back was left to watch the 13–12 loss from his living room sofa, alongside his daughter. After the gameJones finally addressed the situation head-on, telling reporters that he was “concerned” about Randle beyond the oblique injury. “It doesn’t deserve a real knee-jerk reaction as to [the] roster,” he said. “[I’ll] be patient relative to just the sensitivity of anybody that’s going through some trying times. Then we want to really be supportive and help when we can. . . . It’s up to me to . . . let him work through these other issues.”On Monday, Randle finally acquiesced, traveling with Haley to see a psychiatrist. “They had a really long, good talk,” says Haley, who sat in a waiting room while Randle spoke with the doctor. “He came out a different guy.” Afterward, Haley reported back to the Cowboys about the appointment.
The next morning, between her nursing classes, Rodriguez received a call from Randle. “Well, I guess we’re gonna be moving,” he said.
“What do you mean?” Rodriguez asked.
“They just cut me.”
Having to suspend disbelief is one of the hardest thing about watching sports -- not just football but all sports. Having great skills doesn't make you a great person; to be the best at something (sports, art, writing, business, politics, whatever) requires many people to surrender a part of their humanity.
A friend once gave me some advice: Don't confuse the art with the artist. That helps me. Maybe it'll help some of you, too.

Of all the people I thought who'd make a comment about the L violating the A with a lightning bolt, I didn't think it'd be a professional hockey team.
Jordy Nelson ruled out for Sunday.
Legion, it's ...
So, new thread?
What's the big deal? Seems like it's been several years since the 49ers had a head coach.
I actually loled at that
BREAKING: KC-Pitt will be played at 8:20 p.m. Sunday instead of 1 p.m. because of any ice storm.
I guess I'm OK with that. I've got stuff to do outside this weekend.
Man, the ice storm is just starting here in St. Louis, continuing through Sunday night. I just got back from the store with everything we need to hunker down for a few days. Teresa stayed home, so it's like a holiday weekend without family.
As long as the power stays up, we're good. But I was looking forward to the game at noon, Sunday. The late start actually kind of bites.
For the Chiefs, though, I think it is a monster advantage. While Arrowhead is always rocking, those night games are even more intense.
I remember Monday night game against Pittsburgh in which Bettie went off early. A couple of spirited Steeler fans were chanting "All night long!" The wormed turned, and they enjoyed our chanting of the same thing during the second half.
All of my prime time memories of Arrowhead are super positive.
