NFL 2016: Week 17

Yeah Black Monday barely happens now as teams can guys right away. As an Eagles fan some of Reid's decisions still annoy me but at least we were moderately successful back then.

Haha. We had a few of them as well. Tampa Bay comes to mind....oh and Carolina where Reid insisted on throwing over and over despite the run game clicking because James Trash and Pinky were such studs....

Runyan in the Carolina game was begging Reid to run the ball more.

But hey enjoy it. Looking back we all kept thinking some day he would win a Super Bowl. Maybe it will be with the Chiefs.

The goal is always a Super Bowl, obviously. but it's not like this is, from a talent perspective, a great team. It's a good team put in a position to play meaningful football in December and January. And yes, even in KC, there are fans who think this is not good enough. Those fans often get their way.

In KC that lead to 3 playoff games in 14 years after Marty. How many playoff games have the Eagles had since they wisely said goodbye to Reid? Reid has already surpassed the previous 14 year total with 3 games so far, and now a fourth coming this postseason. I mean, the Eagles were in basically the same shape as the Chiefs.

I'm not saying Reid is in line for the Hall of Fame, but he is better than the previous five coaches since Marty left. Maybe Pederson is that guy for the Eagles. Maybe you will wait another 10 years before you find another coach that can get the Eagles to the playoffs consistently. Maybe Philly will win a Super bowl before KC.

Chip Kelly out of Santa Clara, per sources of Adam Schefter and Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area.

Edit: And straight from the team's mouth. Fingers. Whatever.

I forgot to pick thanks to rabbitcon. Ah well, with two missed weeks I'm sure Legion will catch up to me this time.

"@49ers The 49ers relieve Chip Kelly and Trent Baalke of their duties"

The first retweet:

"Relieve Jed f*cking York"

Jeez Green Bay. And they get to host a game.

Sean Payton to be traded to the Rams? Definitely a downgrade for him outside of locale and possible pay.

Sean Payton and Drew Brees for Jeff Fisher and Jared Goff straight up. Works for me.

In the juicy rumor department, apparently Chip Kelly wanted to draft Dak Prescott but Trent Baalke said no. Maybe Baalke would have gone for it if Zeke Elliott and the entire offensive line of the Cowboys was thrown into the mix.

One of SF's GM candidates is Eliot Wolf, son of Hall of Fame GM Ron Wolf. Eliot has been in the Packers personnel department for 13 years, and has been promoted up through the ranks under Ted Thompson. He's expected to take over as Packers GM if Ted Thompson opts to retire this offseason, which hopefully he does not.

The Niners are also expected to interview Brian Gutekunst, Thompson's director of college scouting. So apparently they're looking real hard at Thompson disciples, which I am all for, as my GM-crush on Thompson has been well documented here over the years.

They should just hire you so we can all have regular Slap and Tickles at a suite at Levi's.

How many draft classes do you think Oakland would require to give up Carr?

That's just a brilliant plan; San Francisco would wind up being to Fresno State what Rutgers was to Schiano.

I wouldn't only get Fresno State players.

I'd also have a stable of freakishly athletic run-stopping defensive tackles.

Dontari Poe would be a reserve player at every offensive position.

How many QBs would you be willing to send me for Poe?

I mean once I have Poe, I don't really need them anymore.

Which is probably a good thing, as it's been a few years since the 49ers really had any QBs at all.

You're just mad that the Niners would have the heaviest QB.

Kind of surprised Bowles kept his job considering the Jets had some games where it looked like they totally quit.

Dude! You'd be the only team in the NFL to run a 6-2 defense. Think of the possibilities!

"As far as the investment in Roberto and where we picked him, we were all on board with that," Koetter said. "That's not going to change. We're never going to bring that back. That happened, and Roberto was our kicker and like any other player, if he's got that Buc jersey on and he's out there on game day, I'm 100 percent in. With that said, our field-goal percentage this year was not good enough. That's not the only stat that's not good enough."

Not only did the Bucs hit only 22 of 31 field-goal attempts, they went 4-for-11 on kicks of 40 yards or longer. Aguayo's long was 43, making the Bucs the first NFL team since 2010 to go an entire season without hitting a single field goal of at least 45 yards. To find a Bucs season where they did that, you have to go back to 1980, when Garo Yepremian's long was 43 yards.

"I think it's already proven that we have no problem moving on from a draft choice and playing somebody that wasn't drafted," Koetter said. "We've got to have competition at every position. Nothing's a given. If they're not the best player, then I feel pretty certain in saying they won't be out there."

From here.

Adam Jones reverts to acting like Pacman Jones.

The funny thing is, Aguayo wasn't the worst kicker on the field Sunday.

Sure, he was 1-for-3 (good from 33, WL, blocked). But Carolina's Graham Gano was 1-for-4 (made from 44 but missed from 45, 58 before the half and 36).

Unlike Tampa, though, Carolina isn't going to double down on Gano. He probably won't be back in 2017.

Bortles reportedly played through most of this season injured, with two shoulder separations and wrist tendonitis.

If true, it would at least help explain the significant dropoff from 2015. That and poor offseason preparation. Hopefully a new coach will address that.

Bortles says that he suffered a Grade 1 sprain to his AC joint against the Titans on Oct. 27 and then aggravated the injury against the Lions about a month later.

He sucked before October 27th.

Bortles really dropped off in his pick-six rate at the end of the year; I guess the injury meant he couldn't even throw it to defenders accurately.

Pretty sure I mentioned poor preparation too.

Fact of the matter is, Bortles looked like a different player a year ago, and one of the top jobs of the incoming head coach will be to figure out why. Because I would bet money that the guy that gets hired for the job won't be the candidate that says "oh we need to go draft someone new". Particularly in a draft class that doesn't exactly look like the greatest QB crop.

I expect Bottles will get one more year based on last year, but that'll be it. And if he's terrible again, they'll probably slot in whatever 6th round pick they took or they'll sign JFF.

WTF happened to Allen Robinson is my question.

You're right that another year like 2016 would likely be the end, although that assumes the Jags do not pick up Bortles' 5th year option this offseason. The team has a decision to make.

If they do pick up the option, then Bortles will have every opportunity in 2017 and 2018 to hold down the job.

I'd say LT and Morten Andersen for sure. I'm not sure about some of the others (Dawkins, Taylor, Bruce) simply because of my own ignorance.

Legion?
