I'm looking at Thief in that very same sale.

Thief DLC currently AU$7.55

Thief game, including DLC, reduced to AU$7.55

I'm trying to hold out until closer to the Feb 9 deadline

I liked Thief well enough. Other long-time fans of the series weren't so fond, but I found that it was a more interesting game to play if you knew the story behind its development. It's a pretty fascinating document of its own creation, and it does have some genuinely great moments and ideas in it.

I'm torn as I already have two other "stealth" games (Dishonored and Styx). You could include DeusEx in that tally also as I tend to play it that way (and I guess Skyrim Remastered if I'm looking at it from that perspective).

Do I need another, or is Thief better than what I currently have?

Hmm. I think Thief is interesting and worth playing on its own merits, but I'll be the first to admit that it's a bit of a mess. I haven't played Styx, but if you're just looking for a stealth game, Dishonored is a better pick than Thief (and the Dishonored DLC is better than either game).

I got to the final chapter of Valkyria Chronicles Remastered last night. Sunday is normally my day to rotate games, but I thought I might go ahead and play Valkyria tonight since I was so close to the end.

Nope. I woke up this morning and realized that I had no desire to play any more of it right now. So even though I'm maybe an hour or two from the end, I'm going to put it on hold for a week.

That means I'll only finish one game in January, but I'd rather finish Valkyria Chronicles when I'm excited to play it rather than pushing through and not having fun.

Ha. You were correct though, played through in two sittings over the weekend and really enjoyed it.
It is very Journey-like, but that's no bad thing and properly pretty in places.

Might have have another swim-through soon to try free all the fishes + seek out all those meditation spots and shells.

I'll also be letting my son play too. Watching him play Journey was a great gaming moment, this'll be similar I'd imagine with added bonus he loves ocean life and things like the Blue Planet series - sure this'll be a hit with him too.

So yeah, got my monies worth

Looking over my pile progress since early December, I'm starting to wonder if I maybe shouldn't have allowed an exemption for gifts. I apparently know a lot of generous people.

I looked up the trophies I have remaining and one of them (hit every enemy type with the Groovitron) may require playing through the entire game over again. I really like this game, but I'm not sure I want to play all the way through 3 times back to back to back. So I might skip that one for now and come back to it.

Uh, yeah, so I did this after all. It took me up until the second to last level to grind out XP on my last weapon, so I figured what the hell. And now I have a shiny new Platinum Trophy to show for it.

The pull of the platinum trophy is hard for me to resist, if it is something that is attainable with my fading skills.

walterqchocobo wrote:

R&C (2016) is a totally doable platinum. It's mostly time.

tips

  • None of the trophies are tied to difficulty, so play on Casual if you like.
  • I focused my upgrades on things that increase bolts from enemies, and increase drop rate for cards and Raritanium.
  • Don't worry too much about cards or Gold Bolts right away. Near the end of the game you get an automapper gadget that shows where everything is on the map and it carries over to Challenge Mode.
  • Go for the tresspasser trophy ASAP (I don't think any are missible in the sense that you have to start over, but they are missible in that you may not see them without searching). Then you can use auto-hack afterwards to speed things up.
  • You don't get the Groovitron until a bit into the game, so you won't get the trophy until at least your Challenge Mode playthrough. Use it on everything. If it's something that can attack you, it counts, even if it seems weird (like a tank). Make sure to get the tentacles on the train. I missed these twice (!). Also all the bosses count, so get them as well. It's also great crowd control, and fun.
  • Switch weapons. You will probably develop a favorite weapon, but you need to level all of them. First playthrough you can go to Level 5. In Challenge mode, once you complete the corresponding card set, you can purchase the Omega variant of the weapon which opens another set of upgrades and let's you level to 10.

I think that covers it, but I'll update this if I think of something.

After much deliberation, Sally's Game Club will be running with Far Cry Blood Dragon in February.

They will begin Feb 9th, and I'll post a link here, and in the OP, once Sally has finished hanging all the doors around the house

I'm a little conflicted. I thought I had this on on my 360, so I could hit it with my XB1, and use the awesome Elite Controller, but it looks like I have it on PS3, and I really don't like the idea of playing a FPS with the PS3's controller. #FWP

Haven't had the pleasure of using the Elite, but I'll be happy to go with my PS3 and finally join in the fun of SallyNasty's club!

Whelp, time for the January tally.

Games Beaten:
- Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies

Games in Progress:
- World of Final Fantasy
- Gravity Rush 2
- EarthBound
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3D

Thoughts on February:
I will be resisting the urge to pick up anything in February in order to prepare for the early onslaught of Zelda and Nier in March. I'm most tempted to grab Yakuza 0, but I'd rather play Mafia 3 first. The question is, will I get to?

Zoso posted a "Four in February" thing on Twitter, something I had seen elsewhere, where the goal is to beat four games in February. Technically, the four games in progress would be perfect fodder, yes? Unfortunately they're all time-consuming and to try and beat all of them in 28 days would no doubt kill me. This is also not taking into account FFXV, which I plan to dive back into for the carnival and some monster slaying.

Right now Gravity Rush 2 is my priority console game, and I'm fine with World of Final Fantasy being a slow burn. I figure I can do a final push on that before July if it takes that long so I can have it completed before FFXII. Xenoblade is also going to be a slow burn that I figured might take me the entire year. EarthBound is also something I'm trying to time with the community, so I will probably carry it over into March.

This has me wondering if I should do a bit of shuffling. Gravity Rush 2 will get priority on console, but then slip Mafia 3 into the disc drive and work on that when I'm not feeling GR2 (right now GR2 has the bonus of being a more relaxing game, and thus easier to come back to after a day of work, keeping it as a priority. I also snagged it digital which makes it easier to have a primary/secondary relationship of games). On 3DS, EarthBound will still be a game to play during lunch break and such, but perhaps switch over to Phoenix Wright: Spirit of Justice and postpone Xenoblade. This would still only be about 3 games to beat in February, but even if I only managed three that's still decent progress.

I could also finally get off my butt and work on finishing Aviary Attorney on Steam.

We'll see in any event. The key is always play what you feel like, and right now I'm kind of doing that, but I'm also tempted to play more things. I also need to be careful of my writing and YouTubing projects. Last week I got less game time than usual because I had at least three or four nights worth of project work occupying my time. A healthy balance of work and gaming is most definitely needed.

Plan for Feb
Complete the rest of Life is Strange.
Have a hankering for some story driven gaming at the moment, so maybe find another title in the same vein if do manage to complete LiS.

More Fallout 4. Aim for another 15-ish hours. Slow and steady, so don't burn out on it.

Pootle about in Stardew Valley for a bit.

Try and unravel the intricacies of Darkest Dungeon a little more.

Have a feeling might drop Earthbound, at least for now.

Biggest temptation - have held off on purchasing Doom for a few months. At £15 don't know how much longer I can hold out... my possible purchase for February. Be good if I could step off Overwatch and play this instead.

Sell Steep. Sell Destiny: The Collection (unopened)

That'll do... will undoubtedly change.

Okay, here we go, January 2017, first report of the year.

  • Assassin's Creed: Rogue (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)
  • Firewatch (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif)

I've really played some damn good games this month. Firewatch and Virginia are definitely special, and we all know that I feel Dishonored 2 was utterly robbed in the Community GOTY this year.

Dropped:

  • Heavy Rain (PS3) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - I just can't seem to get back to it. I fail to see the appeal.

Played:

  • King's Quest - Chapter 1: A Knight to Remember (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif)

Remaining games: 57 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (54 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 10 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 1 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 8 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 3

Backloggery says 13, which is pretty good, so I'm just hoping to keep the momentum going. I did wrap up a feel smaller games, and I'm counting different chapters for Dream Machine and King's Quest as separate games, which helps the numbers. But as the final chapter of Dream Machine is still unreleased, well, I'm taking it. I do plan to wrap up Borderlands: Pre-Sequel sometime soon. I'm committed to finishing that with my BFF, since I've done the entire game so far with him, but getting our schedules to sync up has been tough.
As for February... I guess I plan to tackle Shadows of Mordor. It's supposed to be really good, and it's taking up 60Gb on my Steam SSD. Will be finishing King's Quest, hopefully (it's not really grabbing me). I have second playthroughs of Dishonored 2 and Abzû to wrap up as well. And I'll be saving The Silent Age and Toren, smaller games, as palate cleansers.

Nothing on tap to finish tonight, so here's where I stand with my short list since my game buying challenge started on 12/8.

Spoiler:

PS4

  • Alien Isolation
  • Bloodborne: The Old Hunters
  • Ratchet & Clank
  • SOMA

3DS

  • Fire Emblem Awakening

  • Etrian Odyssey Untold: Millennium Girl
  • The Legend of Legacy
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
  • Shin Megami Tensei IV: Apocalypse
  • Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (added as a loan)

Vita

  • Axiom Verge
  • Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (added as a gift)

Xbox 360

  • Far Cry: Blood Dragon (added as a gift)

Axiom Verge was the only game I finished in January. I'm close to finishing Valkyria Chronicles, but it ended up getting bumped out of January and into February.

I added two games to my short list: Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, which a GWJer was kind enough to lend me; and Far Cry: Blood Dragon, which a GWJer was kind enough to buy me for SallyNasty's game club.

February 8th will mark two months into my challenge, and so far I haven't bought anything, although I've been very tempted a few times. I've put a dent into Fallout 4, and I put some time into other handheld games that weren't on my short list but got some attention anyway.

My goal for February is to at least finish Valkyria Chronicles and Far Cry: Blood Dragon. I'd also like to make some progress in EarthBound for the JRPG group. I'll also continue plugging away at Fallout 4 for the time being.

Off to a good start in January I think.

Hyper Light Drifter
Doom
Abzu
Building new PC - the horror game
Dishonored 2 - think I'm getting very close to the end now. Great game.

Nioh is coming up soon, as the first 2017 game I'm interested in, but I think I'll wait and see.
So in February my next goals will be

Firewatch
Final Fantasy XV
Gravity Rush Remastered
Oxenfree

After February the insane new game release schedule takes over for a while (Torment, Horizon, Mass Effect, Dark Souls 3 DLC), and I guess I wont play any backlog games for months to come.

Pile In:
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (3DS)
Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance HD (PS4)

Pile Out:
Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage (PS4)

Feeling pretty good right now. Managed to stick with my focus on Final Fantasy XV for most of the month and I'm having a good time with it still after 25-30 hours more since December. Took a minor break for Diablo III's anniversary event and to blast through Kingdom Hearts 0.2. Only real addition to the pile this month is DQVIII which I'd like to deal with later this year but I've got Pokemon Moon queued up in the 3DS next. So it'll have to wait. KH3D is mostly there for keeping myself honest, and to be honest I already played the original release and this isn't something I'm keen to replay until I decide to do a run at the HD remakes for that franchise once we have a solid release date for the next game. So sometime in 2020

Anyways, I'm liking this singular focus right now. XV is doing a great job as a way to relax each night so I'll keep with it for another month and I expect I'll be playing it straight up to the Switch launch in early March.

In somewhat related news, I'm increasingly irritated with Backloggery and the way I've been using it. I'm finding I'm happier when I don't update it after each session, so I think going forward I'm just going to be updating it when starting and finishing/dropping games rather continuously updating my progress. I think this is one of the things that was making gaming less fun for me and turning it more into a chore. So it's time to stop doing that.

EDIT: Also wanted to add that freeing myself of having any "goals" this year is nice. I don't feel as much like I'm wasting time on things like the Diablo 3 anniversary event. I also skipped my main purchase this month (She Remembered Caterpillars) and while I'm not going to the lengths some other people are with restricting purchases this year, I'll be pretty happy even if the only "new" games I get this year are Final Fantasy XV, LoZ: Breath of the Wild, Persona 5, and Super Mario Odyssey.

No purchases, and only one game beaten (I think), so that's good?

It's better than bad, it's good!

January Update

  • Kingdom Hearts 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage
  • Dragon Quest 2

Finished

  • The Binding of Isaac - Rebirth - Afterbirth+
  • Kingdom Hearts 0.2 A Fragmentary Passage

Also Played

  • Stardew Valley

This month was primarily consumed by the release of Afterbirth+ for The Binding of Isaac, a game I apparently can't resist even though it's a giant pain in the ass. I beat the new and hopefully final end boss of the game so it's technically "finished", but of course I have tons of stuff to work on and unlock.

Kingdom Hearts 0.2 arrived and of course was an immediate priority. It only took two evenings to get through.

Now I'm playing Dragon Quest II. I'm nearing the end and have hopefully finished with the bulk of my grinding after grinding for several hours last night, so I think I'm likely to beat the game this week.

I don't think anything particularly urgent is coming in February -- my next big gaming event is the arrival of the Switch and Breath of the Wild.

January report~

So..I didn't buy any games last month. That's mostly because I had to take my dog to an eye specialist since her corneal ulcer wasn't healing and like human specialists, it wasn't cheap. At the very least, I don't have to worry about that going into this month since her eye has since healed up beautifully. No plans to buy any big new games in February but I am looking to get a new desktop that can run more current games without a lot of hiccups. Abzu is chugging a little on my old laptop's graphic card so it's time to upgrade. I've never bought a desktop or a pc with gaming in mind so this will be a new experience. Honestly, I don't know what brands or specs would be good for a starter gaming pc so I'm open to any suggestions.

Done. Sold for £50 the pair, just what I paid for them.
Minus the fiver ebay fee = £45 to go back into the gaming kitty for the year.

However couldn't resist the call of Doom so take off £15. Played a bit - Safe to say I will enjoy!

Still, total left £268 for the remainder - that's 8 quid more than I started with!

Edit: Or is that cheating?

Your Pile, your rules, so it's only cheating if you say it is.

I think gamifying the outcomes and budget is part of the fun of the pile meta-game you have going for yourself.

I did the same thing once, only "bought" two games for the year, but culled the pile, and traded in a whole pile of games I'd never play, and bought a 3DSXL with the trade credit, and a couple of games I would play. Still only "bought" two games, but reduced my pile of non-games, and grabbed another platform to enjoy without "spending a penny".

Having a hard time not looking at Sword Art Online: Lost Song at $11 for PS4 and itching to get World of Final Fantasy to the detriment of every other game I have right now and with the imminent arrival of my Zelda BotW preorder... Must. Remain. Steadfast.

In other aspects of pile management... oh, Hemidal, where art though? I may actually beat one of the games I wanted to declare and I don't see the February 2017 pile thread (my searches may be stunted by my constant attempts at removing games from my PS Store cart).

Here you go BC - The month may be short but the pile isn't
