2017 - 12 Month Pile Program

Top_Shelf wrote:

Broke my yearlong streak of no games to get the Necromancer expansion for Diablo ($15). And Elderscrolls Online: Morrowind for XBO via the XBL sale ($40).

Trying to resist MvC3, Injustice 2, and the expansion maps for Titanfall 2. All of which are on sale thru 7/10.

$45 for the whole year is pretty good. Right?

ETA: TF2 doesn't actually have maps, just cosmetics. Good. Don't need to waste $ on those!

Uh, grabbed:

Rocket league
Chivalry
MvC3
Injustice 2

That should really do it for me until Battlefront 2 in November and maybe Forza 7 if I get a Scorpio (which will only happen if I get a 4k TV and sell my WiiU, PS4 and launch XBO).

Fallout New Vegas is now officially off the pile. *falls over*

Recent developments mean my family have had to tighten the ol' purse strings a bit... it's more important now than ever to turn to the pile for my gaming... the new stuff can come at birthday (November) and Christmas, but I have plenty to keep me going until then. In fact, looking at my pile and the speed I play at, I probably don't need to buy another game until 2020.

Currently Playing
Dragon Age: Inquisition
Pillars of Eternity
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

Uhhh, yeah I am a bit insane. But honestly, Inquisition is my main squeeze at the moment, I'm just popping into Pillars from time to time so I don't forget where I was up to, and Skyrim is more of a modding project at the moment that I will just tinker with until I have time to tackle it properly.

My pile!

Spoiler:

Dragon Age: Inquisition
Pillars of Eternity
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Fallout 4 (2nd/modding playthrough)
Wasteland 2
Starcraft 2: Wings of Liberty
The Witcher 3 (2nd/modding playthrough)
Mad Max
Metal Gear Solid V
State of Decay
Shadowrun: Returns
Shadowrun: Dragonfall
American Truck Simulator (just drive a bit)
Machinarium
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Jade Empire
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Stardew Valley
Monkey Island 2
Gauntlet
Tropico 5
Anno 2070
Lego Star Wars
Far Cry 3
Wolfenstein: The New Order
Doom
Company of Heroes
Red Alert 3

It's curated a bit. There are some things in my steam library I know I won't ever want to play. I need to go through and hide that sh*t. But you can see why I shouldn't need to buy anything for AGES.

Future Purchases
Total War: Warhammer 2 (pre-purchased... considering cancelling it but don't know if I can do without my Warhammer fix...)
Dishonored 2
Mass Effect: Andromeda

Hoping to pick those last two up super cheap towards the end of the year. My brother normally gives me a steam gift card for my birthday so that should cover Dishonored.

Lastly - can anyone link the July 2017 monthly pile thread. Maybe I'm over tired but for the life of me I can't find it... I've been through the first 5 forum pages about 6 times...

Thanks! Don't know how I missed that!

I have bought... uhm, a lot of games this month. To justify this to myself, I'm am looking at the pile as a pile of opportunity, not a pile of shame. We'll see if that lasts.

Ummmm... Same! Maybe I'll try that opportunity thing

Yay me, I finished two games so far in July!

Good on ya! I finished my first game of 2017 this morning, so I am also in a celebratory mood! (Dragon Age Inquisition)

Well, I "finished" Nier: Automata too, but only one of the endings so I suppose that doesn't count in that type of game.

Yay for finishing games! I'm still elated about completing Fallout New Vegas! Every year I manage to complete at least one game, I consider it a victory, and if I keep going the way I've been going with Oblivion, I might even complete that one too after all these years of playing it and having it on multiple systems. (At least so far as a sandbox game *can* be completed -- I'll consider it complete when all questlines including DLC are done and I've gotten all the achievements at least once. Wouldn't mean there aren't still more things to do past that.)

It's not really helping my pile though in the sense of me having less games, since I still get more games coming in than going out, but it's still a good thing, and I actually like having a pile anyway. When I want a new (to me) game, I can just go "shopping" in my pile.

Oh god bekkilyn, I don't think I've ever completed a game as thoroughly as that. Once the main story is done, that's it off the pile, then if I like it enough to stick around for more that's another matter.

I'm finishing Skyrim the way you're finishing Fallout: New Vegas, Bekkilyn. I love that feeling.

I don't like to leave any loose ends undone! So I rarely ever complete a game, but when I do complete a game, I've done practically everything possible to do in it. (Except anything multiplayer as I rarely play multiplayer so don't count anything related to it in my completion efforts.) Yep, even collected all those feathers in the first Assassins Creed.

I think Skyrim will probably be next on my list after Oblivion. Have played Skyrim for years and years and done tons of things with multiple characters, but have yet to touch any DLC except Hearthfire since I kept getting distracted by other games or with starting a different character before I'd get there. I did finish the main quest once with a character though.

We'll be (virtually) crossing paths then. I'm headed to Cyrodiil and Morrowind when I'm done with Skyrim!!

I was reorganizing my game collection the other day after my three year old decided to use my games in his tower building and noticed that I still have an unopened copy of the Oblivion GOTY edition for PS3. I'll get there...someday. At my current pace, probably around 2021.

After a conversation in the monthly pile thread, I decided to play through my collection in semi-alphabetical order. For each platform I own, I'm playing through an A game, then a B game, then a C game, etc.

It's been really helpful so far. It reduces every decision about what to play from a couple dozen options to just a few. Instead of asking, "which of these 20 Playstation games do I want to play", I instead ask, "which of these three Playstation games that start with A do I want to play". It's unsurprisingly much easier to make that second choice.

It's also given me a much better idea of when I'll actually get to something and what its competition will be. A game I eyeing to purchase might start with D, so I'll get to it relatively soon, but I've got scads of games that start with that letter that I'd rather play.

So far, it's helped me get to some games I was interested in but likely would have put off indefinitely, it's helped me drop a game I knew I needed to drop, and I've discovered a wonderful new game I honestly probably never would have touched otherwise.

I'm a happy camper.

Ah you're saving the best for last! I just love Morrowind! (Though I still need to complete Bloodmoon at some point, naturally.)

It should be well worth the wait!

I'm hoping to be done with Secret of Monkey Island pretty soon. I'm hoping I can go for a hat trick this month

That was such a fun game! It was a game I actually completed last year, but no real help for the pile though because Monkey Isle 2 got offered as a free Games with Gold selection sometime earlier this year.

Ah Well, you come out ahead, because the MonkeybIsland games are some of the best adventure games of all time. Also, you fight like a dairy farmer.

I think I'm gonna try Cloq's tactic of alternating games each week or so. And since I'm using howlongtobeat, I'm going to use their Pick Random feature to help decide what to play. This week: Mordheim: City of the Damned.

I was rushing in to post my monthly update, then I remembered that July was 31 days. Hooray!

31 days have passed!

Good month for for me gaming-wise with a long vacation. Not so much for the pile, as I only played new-ish games.

Completed:
Gravity Rush 2
Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Walking Dead: Season 3
Final Fantasy 12 Zodiac Age
Prey

July report! So I've just finished Walking Dead: New Frontier, and it's half past midnight out here, but I'm totally counting it for July.

Est. remaining hours: 665 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (661 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))

Backloggery says 7 which is incredibly low, compared to the previous month. The main reason for that is that I've added each and every episode for Sam & Max seasons one, two and three, because that's how they show up in my Steam library. Obviously, the "new games" stacked up at five or six episodes per season. I might tackle those next, if only to artificially inflate the number and boost my morale.
The good news, however, is that I'm playing games. I know it might not seem like I'm making much progress, particularly with all the games I've been adding, but I've finished more games in the past month than I have in the previous two months. That's a variety of factors, but mostly, it's been thanks to a shiny new laptop I've treated myself to (so I can work too, of course!), and to consistently putting my kids to bed by 9pm and not having to stay with them until they fall asleep. An hour or two or three of game time has been doing a world of good, to both me and the Pile.

July Progress

Added:
Assassin's Creed Rogue (Steam)
Organ Trail (Steam)
Sam & Max S1 + S2 (Steam)

Beat:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)
Spec Ops: The Line (Steam)

Made Progress In:
Final Fantasy X HD (PS4)
Nier (X360)
Assassin's Creed Rogue (Steam)

It was hard resisting the siren call of summer videogame sales but I somehow made it through without buying anything this month (except for Sam & Max s1/2). I had to keep reminding myself that I still haven't played a good number of games from last summer. :p

When in Rome...

Pile In:
Splatoon 2 (Switch)

Pile Out:
NES Remix (Wii U)
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition (PC)
Back to the Future: The Game (PC)

I got my hat trick this month Not a whole lot to add. This month was mostly killing time until Splatoon 2 hit so I decided to take a whack at a handful of games that had been sitting on the pile for quite some time. Would've added Mega Man 9 to the tally except the final boss is a jerk so I'll have to come back to that later.

And managed to keep my eye on the prize and resist picking up some indie titles I've been following for a while. I'll get them eventually, just wasn't their time I guess.

August is going to be a weird month. Will probably pick up Egglia on iOS and West of Loathing on PC to support those devs although I'm not sure how much I'll play of either since I'm in the midst of Splatoon-fever. I'm curious to see how the Mario + Rabbids game turns out but I'm not really in the mood for an XCOM-like right now so that's a safe pass. And I might finally get back to Final Fantasy XV or Persona 5 one of these weekends on a whim since I've been getting the old RPG cravings again.

Bit late for a June update, shop.

That's what I get for copy & paste

I've... been busy... doing other stuff rather than gaming. I acquired Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, as intended. Beat no games, acquired no others. So... um... win?

July update!

Games added
Blood Bowl 2

Games finished
Dragon Age: Inquisition

Currently playing
Cities: Skylines (Mass Transit expansion)
Tropico 5

Strict one in, one out policy here folks. Bit hard to know how to knock the next two off the pile though, since it's hard to say when I'll be *done* with Cities: Skylines, and I have no interest in the campaign mode of Tropico 5. I'd say about 20 hours of sandbox mode should be enough to cross it off the pile with a clear conscience, and if I'm still having fun and want to play more then that's a bonus. Tropico 6 is coming next year so it has to be now! To muddy the waters, some new Total War DLC (which is free!) comes out on August 10th so that will probably hamper my pile progress.
