2017 - 12 Month Pile Program

A lot of the stuff that looked interesting at E3 either isn't coming out this year or was a sequel to a game that I haven't played yet. I mentioned in the steam sale thread that I was reminded after the conferences that I still haven't checked out Life is Strange, the new Wolfensteins and Ori and the Blind Forest. So I might fix that or maybe not.. Other than that I'll probably be picking up Uncharted: Lost Legacy, Ni No Kuni 2 (wasn't aware it was coming out so soon until I watched a recent trailer) and Hidden Agenda (if it comes out this year. Loved Until Dawn so excited to see what Supermassive puts out next).

Ni No Kuni 2 and Gran Turismo Sport are the only real day 1 purchases that I got out of the e3, both got fall release windows.

Rarely one to buy games at release, so E3 not really going to mean anything this year for the pile.

The Frozen Wild DLC announcement will mean I'll be repurchasing HZD this year (I gambled and lost on it being a standalone Left Behind, First Light job).

I might be tempted by the new 3ds Metroid.

Monster Hunter Worlds only thing can see myself getting day one, but that's early 2018.

Later this year I'll be catching up with things like Nier Automata, FFXV, Persona 5, Titanfall 2 SP.

I did some wishlist maintenance yesterday. Anything I wouldn't be psyched to get as a gift, I removed.

That's smart thinking. With 32 games on mine, it's getting ridiculous, no matter how many games "look cool, maybe I'll get around to buying them later".

If only there was a way to separate the "games that look cool" list from the "games I really want" list.

Also, 32 games? My 124 game list mocks your puniness.

Amateurs.

I should do this although we'll see if adding "No Gifts" to my Steam name will work again. Been considering consolidating all my wishlists into something like Pocket at some point. Has anyone tried that or setting up a global wishlist outside of Steam?

I tried that criteria, and I only cut a few games. Apparently I'm really up on gaming right now and am psyched to get a lot of things.

Same, I only removed 6 games. Tee hee.

Why wouldn't it? Do people not abide by the "no gift" addendum?

Eleima wrote:

Hasn't happened in recent sales, but there was a string of sales where I would randomly get sent a gift by one or two people despite the label. Which I would usually accept because I didn't want to be ungrateful, but it was always more the principle of the thing.

Also, people would try and send me a gift if I got them something which was always awkward so I've just ignored the last few major Steam sales. Also also, no more buying games in bulk, stashing them in the inventory, and sending them later

I'm gonna be honest though, Shop. If I see Hollow Knight on sale, I'm gonna wanna gift it to you.

Because I know it's your jam.

I KNOW THIS, MAAAAAAAN!

I updated my wishlist just in case, though. I know some folk like to do the gift buying despite the label. I only feel guilty because I never really get around to most of this stuff. My laptop isn't really equipped for gaming right now but I just dug out my 360 paddle from the basement so that I can try playing some of the indie stuff while awaiting the opportunity to set up my desktop.

Thanks for the reminder to sweep my steam and PSN wishlists. Trimmed them down to 22 and 19 items respectively; I prefer to keep them short so even those numbers feel too high. I'll trim again when I've mulled over the sale offerings. Just don't ask me about my book wishlist. [cough] 521 titles and counting, and yes I do cull it regularly. [/cough]

The theme of my sale potentials list is "Help, I've fallen down another pit!" Now that I've got a controller with a good D-pad for my PC I'm hoping to pick up some 2D exploration types. With precision movement controls my ineptitude can reach new heights. Hollow Knight is top of the list, then maybe a Shantae, that gorgeous-looking Wonderboy remake, Song of the Deep, Owlboy, etc. Other than that, there are a few strategy game DLCs which I'll pick up if they go cheap enough, and a few bigger games like Torment: Tides of Numenera which probably won't go cheap enough.

As I've said before, a game which is purchased on sale and not played is money wasted not money saved. Honestly, I expect to pass on most of my wishlist. [sigh] I feel so boring.

Time for the June update since I don't think the below is going to change...

Pile In:
Ever Oasis (3DS)
The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks (DS)
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (DS)
River City: Knights of Justice (3DS)

Pile Out:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
River City: Knights of Justice (3DS)

Let it be known that I have finally beaten a game this year (which wasn't a tech demo or a mobile title I started the year before). And not just one, but TWO games! Anyways, weird month. Beat Breath of the Wild and immediately had some sort of weird knee-jerk response to dive into retro stuff so I fired up Mega Man 9 and NES Remix which had been sitting in the pile (albeit at least previously started) and picked up River City: Knights of Justice for some BIFF, POW, BARF action.

And then topped it off with a small Amazon splurge to get some DS games I had missed previously and Ever Oasis. Oops.

My July plans are to continue riding the retro train. I would like be done with at least two of Mega Man 9, NES Remix, or Secret of Monkey Island (which I started noodling around in off and on the last two months on a whim) before Splatoon 2 hits at the end of the month. There's also the Diablo III Necromancer DLC which I bought but I'm waiting for the new Season to start as to kill two birds with one stone, which also starts at the end of the month.

Should be a fun month

Guess I may as well before bed.

GAMES COMPLETED:
- Nier: Automata

GAMES ON HOLD:
- Gravity Rush 2
- World of Final Fantasy
- Xenoblade Chronicles 3D
- Hollow Knight

GAMES IN PROGRESS:
- Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
- Darksiders: Warmastered Edition
- ARMS?

I decided to go back to my spreadsheet and see what's on the side of the road. Right now I need a palette cleanser because I'd like to dive into Horizon: Zero Dawn, which means I'll actually be jumping into Tales from the Borderlands and maybe Abzu. It seems like Abzu is pretty short, and Tales From the Borderlands is a Telltale game which means I can probably get it done in a week if I play one episode per night. That I'm about to start video editing again means games with less time to complete or required are ideal.

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition I don't mind putting on hold since I've played Darksiders before. It's sort of a holdover game, such as when I needed a bit of a break in Route B of Nier: Automata. Fire Emblem being on 3DS means it's going to be secondary firearm gameplay. It's alright to have slow progress, though part of me wants to give Ever Oasis a try. I'd also like to get back to Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.

ARMS is basically "play with my nephew" game right now. I'll give it a bit more time but no real dedication on my part. Which a fighting game doesn't need, so there's that.

July, though? July's gonna be rough. "Play two games before Horizon: Zero Dawn" may not happen. It may instead be "Play two games before Final Fantasy XII", which releases on the 11th. Then on the 18th is the Destiny 2 Beta, followed by Splatoon 2 on the 21st. I might be seeking a specific night of the week to sign onto Splatoon 2 for Horde mode, or competitive, depending on the mood of whoever is playing.

I have some confidence as my telecommuting arrangement means I can stay up until about midnight, and that opens up the 10pm to 12am window for me. It used to be that the odds of me getting much game time decreased as the clock approached 9pm, and while I'm a lot more busy than when I lived in PA, I find I can always find some daily time to game. Also, being able to sign on between 10pm to 12am means I can play online multiplayer with West Coast GWJers. Options!

August and September are both dropping some hefty titles as well, though aside from Hellblade I'm not decided/devoted to anything in the former month. It's possible I can proceed through without too much damage, so to speak. I'm crossing my fingers that November and December remain largely empty as they are now.

June

Started: Pokemon Red, Persona 3 Portable
Played: Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness

Started out this month with Disgaea, wasn't feeling it, switched to the comfort food of an old Pokemon game. Then decided on further comfort food by playing P3P with the female protagonist.

Not much to report in June for me.

Purchased: Horizon Zero Dawn (such a good sale!) and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor ($3.99 on the PSN sale!!!)

Finished: Rise of the Tomb Raider

June

Finished:

Oh my God, the entire month of June went by and I didn't play a single game.

So hating my job. ("Go live" for our new ERP software was pushed back to the end of August, so I'm probably losing another month of leisure.)

Didn't get much done this month.

Finished:
Gravity Rush

Close, but yet so far:
TES: Oblivion
Gravity Rush 2

Added:
Yeah, no. A Steam sale happened. Might also have slipped a Switch into my pocket along the way. Dont want to talk about it.

Hope to finish Gravity Rush 2 this weekend. And then onward to Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
Wonder if there are enough hours in a day to finish it before Final Fantasy XII remaster.
Summer vacation started today, will try my best!

June Progress

Added:
Syberia (Steam)
Chip's Challenge 1 (Steam)
Life Is Strange (Steam)
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor (Steam)
Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus (Steam)
Dishonored + Knife of Dunwall & The Brigmore Witches DLC (Steam)

Beat:
To The Moon (Steam)
Samorost 2 (Steam)

Made Progress In:
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Wii U)
Final Fantasy X HD (PS4)

Thanks to getting a couple short games from the steam key thread, I was able to actually beat something. Holy cow. The last game I beat was Silent Hill in March. However, I am winding down on Breath of the Wild though. I have all of the divine beasts and memories so I just want to do a few more shrines and side quests before charging Hyrule Castle. Crossing fingers that I see the credits roll in the next week or so. Just so I can play something else for once :p

Decided to go with Final Fantasy X out of that list of RPGs after thoroughly enjoying going and seeing the Distant Worlds concert. So far I'm liking it. I also picked up Life is Strange and Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor since the sequels for those games look interesting. Wolfenstein: The New Order and Ori and the Blind Forest will have to wait for another sale. I think I have enough unplayed games anyways.

Somebody keeps editing a post again.

In good news, I'll have Tales From the Borderlands beat by tonight or tomorrow, so July's already off to a positive start!

I'll have my report up tomorrow, hopefully (am posting from my phone). But let's just say, it's not great.

Broke my yearlong streak of no games to get the Necromancer expansion for Diablo ($15). And Elderscrolls Online: Morrowind for XBO via the XBL sale ($40).

Trying to resist MvC3, Injustice 2, and the expansion maps for Titanfall 2. All of which are on sale thru 7/10.

$45 for the whole year is pretty good. Right?

ETA: TF2 doesn't actually have maps, just cosmetics. Good. Don't need to waste $ on those!

At the halfway point and it's been a very lazy year so far. I lost the will to play anything over the past few months but I rediscovered the passion during E3 and since then I've been cranking out as many hours as I can between work and family.

I'm a chapter away from finishing Wolfenstein: The New Order, not much further from the end of Mafia III, and I've gotten well into Fallout 4 again. I even found a chunk of time to get started on Final Fantasy XV for the RPG club last night.

My lack of interest even helped with some well needed saving and there's a few games I normally would've picked up that I'm now quite happy to let sit while I get to work on the pile.

June update

Annual game budget remaining at start of June - £174

Incoming
Overwatch (Repurchase) - £30
Monster Hunter 4U - £10

Outgoing
Wasteland 2 - sold - £6

Annual game budget remaining at end of June - £140

That's half the year gone and £120 of my £260 budget for the year spent so far, on target to play within my means at the moment.

Plan for July

Finish Dishonored on PS4. Settling for low chaos.
Finish off the tiniest lil piece of Life is Strange on PS4.
Properly digging Stardew Valley on PS4 at the moment - more of that.
Play some Monster Hunter 4U.

Biggest temptations this month...

Nier Automata.
Hasn't hit £25 physical yet, when it does...

Fantasy Life or Rune Factory 4.
Stardew valley on the big screen has me hankering after something that scratches the same sim itch on the 3DS - Didn't really love Story of Seasons, but maybe something with a bit of adventuring on the side might fit the bill.

Ever Oasis.
Walked into a GAME shop on release. Picked up and held in my hand. Put it back on the shelf. Walked out of shop. Resist score 10/10!

Better late than never. Ran into a few hurdles and had to stash my rig at work, so getting the report out was a bit tricky (no way I was doing this from my phone).

Time for the June report.

Whoops! Steam Sale happened, and some folks were generous, despite my "no gifts" deterrent. And I don't have the heart to turn away a gift. So yeah, that happened.

Finished:
None.

Dropped:
None.

Played:

  • The Elder Scrolls 5 : Skyrim - Special Edition (Steam) IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) - Almost done with it, still loving it. Beat all of the main game as well as the Dawnguard DLC. I've saved my favorite for last, the Dragonborn DLC.

Remaining games: 54 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (51 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Games): 26 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 5 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) - 24 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 7
Est. remaining hours: 600 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) (596 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unplayed.gif))
Progress (Est. total hours): 144 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/beaten.gif) + 90 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/null.gif) + 132 played IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/unfinished.gif) - 295 IMAGE(http://backloggery.com/images/new.gif) = 71

Backloggery says 25 (and includes a couple of games I added in July, since I'm running late). Definitely not progress, that's for sure, but the way I figure it, Steam Sale damage was minimal, and I do intend to get back to Mass Effect: Andromeda and Night in the Woods, and as soon as possible. As it is, I'm going to play smaller, simpler games on my crummy 10 year old laptop (better that than none at all!!!).

June Update

Heheh. Well at least you have something to show for it, unlike me.
I did complete one visual novel on my laptop this weekend though, so here's to July being better than June!

Whoop! Dishonored 2 is done. The end came quicker than I anticipated.
