Weekly Co-op Gaming!

Pages

This thread is for the discussion of a weekly co-op gaming group. The idea is that we pick cooperative games such as Neverwinter Nights 1, Borderlands, Diablo, and more to play each week until finished (or the group decides to stop).

The idea was created because of the recently free version of Neverwinter Nights 1 (2002) on gog.com. Enough people expressed interest in playing together from start to finish.

So, let's get the ball rolling!

What times and days are people available?

I'm available most evenings after 8pm. I'd be up for about a 4 hour session, max. Once a week sounds great to me.

I'm going to go ahead and put my vote in for Fridays 8PM EST. That way most of us don't have to wake up early the next morning.

Fridays would work for me. Yeah, me. The guy who said he didn't want another 'game club'. Sigh. Here I go.

I'm the actual worst for this. Zudz weekend starts on Sunday. So I'm available on Sunday and Monday at any time, or the rest of the week after 10:00 PM EST.

Sundays may work for me too.

I'd be in the 'after 10pm EST' time.

Sundays would work for me

We could also have a few different tiers. Why don't we go by time zone? I don't know how many people can be playing at once, per server, but maybe we could shake it out into time zones?

Sunday could work for me. I'd probably prefer a slightly shorter session time, 3 hours?

I set up a Doodle for every day of the week with times spanning 1PM-11PM PST.
You should be able to select an option for your timezone(might need to make an account), and it should auto-adjust the times I put in to fit your timezone regardless of what it is. It may actually do this automatically, someone non-PST let me know?

Anywho, there's Yes, No, and Maybe options and just select what hours you'd be available(e.g. selecting 9:00 & 10:00 means 9:00-10:59 you're available). That way we can see how long the average session could be as well.

Sundays are usually best for me.

Entered my times.

When I get home, I'll try installing the game and setting up a quick multiplayer game to see how it all works. We may need to make a quick set of instructions for everyone.

When we are all ready and we pick a time/day, we'll have a Session 0 where we work out any bugs, figure out a chat/voice chat system, make our characters, and test it out.

Anytime is ok with me.

I have been looking up how multiplayer works for NWN. The official servers have been taken down. People can still play by using a direct connection with one person hosting.

There appears to be a number of different types of multiplayer with this game.

Co op through regular game. Note some of the DLC is meant only for single player.
Persistent world where people login and do whatever.
DM guided. DM the game like a D&D game.

Some things I noted while watching a game. You can split the party. People can go off and do different things. When you talk to a NPC everyone can hear the conversations but I'm not sure if everyone has to be in the same location to hear the conversation. When getting quest rewards everyone had to talk to the NPC to get the reward, at least this was true in the tutorial dungeon. The game is real time. The game looks dated but I did see a game using a graphic mod that made it look pretty good. You can play evil.

Okay, I'm on the doodle. Aside from the two-and-a-half weeks I'll be gone in December, this is my general availability.

I'd like to play the campaign through co-op, and then maybe the DLC. I'm not really bothered by bringing multiple players into a game intended for one person. Also, I'm down for using voice comms (Disc, Curse, whatever).

I don't know how many we're going to end up with, but at least as of now it looks like splitting into groups of three might be the way to go. Unless we just want to mob up and play all 6 VS the world. I'm super down for the degree of overkill that would be, but coordinating 6 people seems... challenging.

I *think* it balances itself out. If you have a larger party, you get less XP per kill because it's divided amongst the party. Therefore, you will be lower level.

It's been a long time though, not sure.

I'm fine with either.
The chaos of 6 people might be really interesting, as long as one or two people don't keep running ahead. Pacing is the only issue I can see, depending on how loot is handled. Diablo was a pain if you had a friend who insisted on picking up every common drop.
Depending on how that persistent world mode works, we could even have 6 people in one session, split into 2 parties doing different stuff. Would feel like a tiny MMO when we cross paths, and sometimes we might need to team up for some harder quests? That actually has a lot of appeal as someone who wants an MMO-like experience, without it being 10,000 to a server. Depends how that mode works though.

Anyone mind if I stream my end of the experience or at least record video to upload to YouTube later?
Not sure if I'd go for recording all mics, just mine, or go for no vocals, but kinda want to play around with that stuff more.

EDIT: It's leaning towards Monday nights so far. 5PM to 8 or 9PM PST(8PM-Midnight EST?) with some people popping in and out for a couple hours. That or we do split into two groups, those who can play 3-4 hours, and those who can only manage 1-2?

I am interested in playing if that would not be too many people. Haven't played NWN in a long time, but this sounds like fun. I put in the times im available.

Signed up on the doodlebug link. I'm really stoked about playing this again. Hopefully Sunday night...?

Oh, it's co-op? Garg. My life is hopelessly complicated for co-op. I thought we all were just playing the same game solo.

Oh, well, I'll shake my pom-poms and cheer you all on!

It seems like there's enough interest here to split into two separate groups? Possibly a Sunday and a Monday group?

I added myself to the poll. Sounds like fun, although scheduling is always interesting near the holidays.

Player limit seems to be 4, so we could probably do 3 groups.

Man, I don't even know how to break this into groups. Some people might have party members who come in for part of a play session, but I'm wondering how that will work with the leveling system. Will someone fall too far behind in level and feel like they can't contribute?

I'm sure you are right but I thought it was 64 player limit. Yeah 64 but maybe that was for the second game.

From what I saw on Co-Optimus it was 4, but I could be wrong.
I read some things that the solo-campaign being played multiplayer can be a bit too easy, but the main suggestion was to release any henchmen you have before playing with other people as they can get buggy.

This game really does some cool stuff. They have portals you can create to link multiple servers together, then you can just use a portal to go from one server to another, back and forth.

For serious. I don't know how to make these groups.

Sorry, I got tied up with a few things this past week. Okay, let's take a look at that calendar and figure out when to play.

Maybe we could do a Friday and Monday group that starts at 9PM? There can always be some wiggle room for people that can't make it until 10pm or so. We can try to start with 2 hour game sessions and see how that goes. I'm sure things will change slightly once we begin to play and people drop out or more people jump in.

I'm personally going to jump into the Friday group. I'm not sure I can swing the Monday group as well.

I can do either. Maybe I'll go Monday for now for the sake of parity.

I work nights so the best time for me to try co op is on weekend late evenings. I put my time slots in the doodle.

I am open to play pretty-much whatever co op (is anyone going to pick up Spacehulk Deathwing?) I like playing support/healer if that is an option in a given game.

Message me if anyone wants to group up in a game, I probably already have it or would be happy to buy it.

Monday night works better for me

For NWN does anyone want to volunteer to host the game?

Monday works better for me too.

Someone is going to have to host each group. I'd normally volunteer, but after tomorrow I'll be out of the country for the next three sessions.
