Favorite Personal Gaming Accomplishments

I'm glad you enjoyed it! From time to time, I think about going back and platinuming it. Not any time soon though, because I've got a date with Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth after this weekend!

Ahhh.
Well this weekend i will now start FFXVI

The one that comes to mind right off the bat is finishing Origin Systems 2400 A.D. on my Apple //e. The game was similar to the early Ultima games (say more U2 and U3) but in the future. A lot more combat and so difficult, particularly at the start.

Took me probably close to a year to finish that. No internet back then and didn't get the Quest for Clues book that had hints for it until after I finished it.

In any case the ending for that game was a huge letdown. All those months working at it and you get a "Congratulations" screen with a few lame fireworks shooting off.

All the same was pretty proud of myself for sticking with it to the end.

And yeah as someone mentioned previously finishing Mike Tyson's Punch Out. A friend of mine had that so went over there to play it. And finished it at his house before he did.

In yo face Craig!!!

Oddly enough, I've been able to beat everyone except for Super Macho Man. Including Tyson / Mr. Dream, when skipping over SMM -- though that took me a lot of tries.

I could never quite get the rhythm for ducking his big circular punch.

I mean I could list every game I've completed as an accomplishment, but let's be honest most games are designed to be completed if you put enough time into them. I just listed the ones that were the most difficult and/or meaningful to me:

Completing the Zorks. (I'm old)

Unlocking the Codex of Ultimate Wisdom in Ultima IV.

Saving the princess in Karateka.

Saving my entire family in Sid Meier's Pirates!

Taking Yeovil Town from the bottom of the lowest league all the way up to the Premiere League championship in Ultimate Soccer Manager 98.

Completing the Baldur's Gate series.

Winning the Super Bowl with the Jets in Madden (It's the Jets, this is much harder than you think).

Conquering the Roman Empire in Rome: Total War.

Getting around the world in 80 days in 80 Days.

Destroying the mothership in FTL.

Getting the Vaulters off planet in Endless Legend.

100%ing Assassin's Creed: Odyssey and Hades

Actually getting a victory condition in Stellaris, the sci-fi game most people just play to a certain point.

Hopefully at the end of this year I can add getting my people to Hiigara in Homeworld. That has been an unremoved thorn in my side for decades now.

once you master and figure out this spin move... he is ultra easy

There was a Galaga arcade machine in my dorm in college. I think it was set to easy mode.. because while I think i'm pretty good at that game I'm not THAT good...

either way, the score would reset at 1,000,000 points and go to zero. So if you got 1,000,010 points, it showed as 10 points and you actually wouldn't make the high score list.

So I made it my goal to end the game at 999,990 points. As I got closer, I actually killed myself a few times so I only had 1 life left.. and since I knew how much each enemy was worth when they were killed, I basically got my final score suiciding into a falling enemy and locked in at 999,990.

Of course within hours somebody reset the machine, but for me, it was mission accomplished.

You just reminded me. I got the number 8 on minesweeper. Pure luck, but it happened!

Also, while it's not video gaming, I did finally complete a NY Times Sunday Crossword start to finish without the use of Google, or the hints you can get from the NY Times a few weeks ago. Haven't been able to repeat that performance since, but felt pretty damn good about it.

I think that counts as a gaming accomplishment!

XCOM Enemy Within Impossible Ironman. I failed it at least half a dozen times. When I finally did beat it, I uninstalled the game, because NEVER AGAIN!
