European Politics discussion

Rishi Sunak has given up and is - apparently going to call a UK General Election for July.

I’m honestly surprised - I wasn’t expecting anything before November. I do wonder if the Tory rebels had got enough signatures to force another leadership campaign.

Edit: Confirmed, GE to be held on July 4th.

The Independence Day jokes are going to be terrible.

His speech today was in a downpour with no umbrella. I’d imagine the jokes for that are inbound.

Just part of the new slogan.
“Things can only get Wetter”

Nobody in British public life would be seen dead with an umbrella since this infamous headline:

The rain falls on the just and the Tories alike.

Worth noting - although I'm not sure I'd take it that seriously - that at least some Tory MPs are looking to veto the whole situation by forcing that leadership campaign. If they can do that before the formal dissolution of parliament, then they'll get their wish.

I'm quite impressed they've managed to find a way to make things even more politically toxic for the Tories to be honest. That might just be the straw that would see mass civil unrest.

Sooo... they want to delay the election until they are even more unpopular than they already are?

I'm very proud that, as an American soccer fan, despite the jpeg not working, I know exactly what headline you're talking about.

I think I need to find a new photo hosting site.

I’m also fairly sure that Sunak’s announcement yesterday, in the pouring rain, while someone in Whitehall was playing D’Ream’s ‘Things can only get better’ very loudly is going to be his Ed Milliband Bacon Sandwich moment. Not bad considering it’s his first election campaign moment.

D’Ream kicks in about the 2.13 mark. It’s deafening.

They need time for their propaganda machine to ramp up. And like the Republicans in the US, theirs is very effective.

So one of the oddities of the U.K. media landscape is that leading up to the election is only time the BBC stops deferring to the government line on everything and start doing equal time to the parties. It’s one of the things that caught May out in the 2017 election. She was way ahead in the poles versus Corbyn but he got to spend enough time on the BBC pushing the anti-austerity line to narrow things significantly. May didn’t run an amazing campaign but the Conservative press influence reduces rather increases during elections.

Nah, you just have to navigate the peculiarities of Imgur.

You posted:

But that brings you to the page containing the image, not the image itself.

The proper link to the image is:

There used to be a button you could press on Imgur that would do all that for you. Now it just gives you the link.

Like I said, I need to find something else. I don't usually have the patience - or brainpower - to sort all that out when I'm posting after work!

On the Imgur page, right click on the image and select "Copy image address" (or the equivalent for your browser).

Outrage at footage of people singing Nazi slogan at party on German island

Footage from an elite German party island of people singing a Nazi slogan in place of the lyrics of a disco hit has gone viral and triggered a wave of outrage.

The film shows a group on Sylt in North Frisia drinking and dancing together to the 2001 song L’amour Toujours by the Italian musician Gigi D’Agostino. Some in the group sing an old Nazi slogan “Germany for the Germans – foreigners out” in place of the song’s apolitical lyrics.

Among the participants, who are dressed casually and appear to be holding glasses of Aperol, rosé, and champagne, was one man dressed in an open-necked white shirt who lifts his right arm in an apparent Nazi salute as he imitates the Hitler moustache by putting two fingers above his upper lip.

Both the slogan and the salute are illegal in Germany.

The film appears to have been made during the recent Whitsun bank holiday weekend by a young woman who is herself singing into the camera.

Police in the state of Schleswig-Holstein said they were “checking the film for criminally relevant” contents.

The slogan “Germany for the Germans – foreigners out” is a chant originating in the 19th century that was used by the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler and has also been deployed as an election slogan by the far-right National Democratic party.

The owners of Pony, a fashionable bar and club on Sylt’s Strönwai street outside which the film was shot, are cooperating with the police. In an Instagram post they said they were “deeply shocked” and distanced themselves “from any type of racism or discrimination”.

Tim Becker, a co-owner of Pony, later told the daily TAZ that footage from CCTV cameras newly installed outside the club had been compared with the 14-second online video and the same group was identified. Sound from the video showed only about five guests had been singing the anti-foreigner version, while the others were singing the original, he said.

“You can hear that very clearly and that was a relief to us,” he said.

He said neither he nor the club’s DJs had been aware that the D’Agostino hit, which he said was popular throughout Europe, had been in effect hijacked by the far right. “Often it’s just played briefly, in order to stoke up the mood. We didn’t know that the song was used by the far right … We will never play it again,” he said.

In the Instagram post, Pony’s owners wrote that anyone who “recognises themselves on this video … will be barred from our premises”. Becker urged anyone who knew who the individuals were “to report them to us or the police”.

Partygoers at Pony, situated on the island’s Whisky Mile in the town of Kampen, had reportedly paid €150 (£128) for entry to the summer season opening party at which the incident took place. According to Pony, about 500 people attended.

The Bavarian broadcaster BR recently reported that the Nazi version of L’amour Toujours had become popular at public gatherings and discos across Germany, including at a disco in Greding in January that took place after a party conference of the far-right Alternative für Deutschland. The disco was attended by MPs and members of the party, as well as members of the AfD’s youth wing, who allegedly joined in singing the Nazi version.

Reacting to the video, the Social Democrat party member Sawsan Chebli posted on X: “‘Germany for the Germans. Foreigners out. Foreigners out.’ Location: Sylt. And they feel so confident.”

Dunja Hayali, a prominent news anchor, wrote on the same platform: “With Hitler moustaches and champagne. But no ‘foreigners’. #Sylt 2024.”

Sylt is known as the go-to holiday island for Germany’s rich and famous. It is where the finance minister and chief of the pro-business Free Democratic party, Christian Lindner, married his partner in July 2022.

Schleswig-Holstein police said in a statement on X: “A video of people celebrating on #Sylt is currently circulating on social media. This video is known to us and is being checked for criminally relevant content. We would like to thank you for the numerous pieces of information that we have forwarded to the responsible authority.”

Members of the state government of Schleswig-Holstein also expressed outrage. The state’s minister with responsibility for integration, Aminata Touré of the Greens, told the news network RND: “This is not some stupid youthful prank, but the worst sort of Nazi caterwauling by adults, on a public stage. Despicable and nauseating. They should be ashamed of themselves. Criminal proceedings should now follow.”

Nobody ever saw that coming.
Oh, wait...

And like in US and elsewhere; there is a significant % of the population looking at it, thinking 'this is exactly what I want'.

Head of AFD says #notallss . At least he didn’t say “very fine people on both sides”

Sure seem to be a lot of “nazi positive” folks in the AfD…

Nigel Farage, noted Privately Educated "man of people" has decided to change his mind, and and stand as a candidate for Reform UK while also taking the leadership of said party. This is mostly to massage his own ego, but I suspect that Conservative HQ is now trying to work out how much more to the right they can go, because he will cost them votes.

Conservative HQ are still worried about getting votes?

Gotta admire their optimism I guess!

Gods I hope the Brexitiers get slaughtered.

What is his end game here?
Suppose he gets elected - what then? Does he spend his time as a harping non-govt backbencher? Or does he stick with this right wing grifter mates and just not show up for his job like he did with the EU position he had?

To have more time in the limelight, and also to get elected as an MP. I wasn’t joking about his need for self aggrandisement. He’s an odd duck at time Farage, once you take away immigration (now that we have actually Brexited) practically all his views and opinions and very - well, republican politics in the US. That doesn’t play well in the UK are we are, despite it all, considerably more socialist than that - as much as some Conservatives bulk a little at the cost of the NHS, they know outright ‘we’re going to get rid of it’ is political suicide. And most Conservative voters would be horrified at that idea as well.

Farage also hitched his wagon to Donald Trump quite a while ago and Trump’s convictions last week have put in a big dent there, so he now needs to disassociate himself from Trump, and that’s a large part of it too. He’s previously said he wasn’t going to partake in the election ‘due to being in America’, but that now looks to be off the table.

He gets a disproportionate amount of airtime here, which I find very irritating, but then again right now Reform UK are polling higher than both the Greens and the Lib Dem’s. Even at their height, UKIP never really got higher polling than the Lib Dem’s.

It should be noted that a fair proportion of Reform UK’s other candidates are convicted racists / thugs / conmen. They are not a serious party (they are bankrolled by Richard Tice, and pretty much him alone) but there are a lot of people who agree with them, especially around immigration.

Farage becoming an MP - assuming he gets elected - is only really interesting in case he defects to the Tories and stands to be Tory party leader. That would be an extremely interesting development.

He's a Tory that helped implement the austerity that broke the UK, but his points about how the media's treatment of politics as a futbol test match rather than a practice with real substantive consequences is well taken. The same could be said about American media and be 1000x more true.
