It's coming! It's coming!
I'm excited. So excited that I preordered it and got two free tractors.
Yup yup.
Game is looking noticeably improved over FS15.
Can't wait to dive back into my little Zen garden.
My 5 y/o discovered FS15 last weekend, and he's gone from a hardline train enthusiast to a bonafide farmer. He's already asked me and his mother when we can sell the house and buy a farm. I just dropped the cash for Battlefield 1, so my budget is stretched already, but he may talk me into picking this up over the next few weeks.
I bought a bag of sunflower seeds recently, which I've been slowly munching on while watching FS videos, to enhance my anticipation of planting a nice big field of sunflowers.

Oh? Legit sunflower seeds, or just the pre-shelled stuff?

Legit sunflower seeds. Sheesh! What kind of heathen do you take me for?!
Actually, I really don't care for spitting seed husks out; I'd probably rather have pre-shelled. :)
More on-topic: Did you know that sunflowers will apparently track the sun in FS17?

Pretty cool. It's all in the little details. Actually sunflowers are a pretty interesting plant. My father-in-law grew some in his garden one year, and we actually cut a head and baked up some seeds just for the novelty.
Barbaric!
Barbaric!
Spitting seeds is not quite as nasty a business as chewing tobacco, but I still indulge when driving long distances. It helps me keep alert on the road. Otherwise I've lost the habit. LOL
Anywho... I really should install the '15 version some time and put some time into it. This years version looks pretty nice.
The Steam store page says that FS17 will unlock "in less than an hour". I had just assumed it would be releasing at the usual 1PM (ET) store update time tomorrow, so if true, this is an unexpectedly delightful turn of events!
Oh man, that's great news.
I'm already on a time crunch as I'll be out of town this weekend and was looking at only a few hours of FS17 gameplay before heading out.
Of course this just means I'm not going to pack my bag until the very last minute! :p
First 5 minutes.
- Looks sharper and more detailed than FS15.
- Feels like vehicles have more moving parts (i.e. harvester combine's header).
- Vehicles now jostle around when you're in the cab.
- WAY more options to toggle (manual engine start, etc.).
- Runs smooth as butter on Max settings, even on my mid-range laptop. (wheat harvesting...biggest resource drain in the game...did drop my fps from 60 locked to 45-50)
All signs point to WIN so far.
Yippee!
Boy, driving the farm equipment is a lot more difficult than Daggerwin makes it seem. Admittedly, I'm playing with M+K, so WSAD doesn't exactly make for optimal controls, but still.
Being new to the franchise I figured I'd go through the tutorials.
It seems I'm a natural farmer. I'm ready for Career mode!
Yesterday, I had to drive on a road in town that I haven't driven in a few months. The road in question hosts a small farm. The farm had a bunch of equipment parked alongside the road, as it usually does. I had a very weird moment as I drove past wherein I immediately (a) recognized each of those pieces of machinery, and (b) knew exactly what they are used for -- neither of which I had any idea about, more than a month ago. I felt pretty good about that.
P.S.: doubtingthomas, the thread should be titled "Farming Simulator", not "Farm Simulator".
Well since this thread is bumped, I'll just chime in and say that I'm absolutely loving FS17.
Giants has been accused of dragging their feet between FS releases, relying heavily on the modding community to make sweeping gameplay advances on their own. This time out, the dev has taken the reigns and provided an incredibly matured product out of the gate. Far more system advancements than ever before (scripts, soil "science", vehicle upgrades & maintenance, crop diversity, in-game mod management, etc.).
As someone who was somewhat cynically expecting a slightly more polished 'more of the same' experience, I'm pretty taken aback by how much bigger, better, and more badass FS17 is over its predecessor. Feels like this game is gonna do just fine as a mainstay in my Steam 'Installed' Library over the next couple years.
soil "science"
OK, now you've got my interest. What is the soil "science?"
I got the game when it launched to see what it's all about. It's certainly fun in a "git 'er done" kind of way. I've restarted a couple of times after my reversing with a trailer skills managed to get me jack-knifed into a corner. It was so bad even unhooking the trailer wouldn't let me get control of the tractor.

In past titles, you could run fertilizer or slurry tanks at any point in the cycle to increase crop yield. Even when the field was harvest-ready.
Now there's a 'realism' toggle that has you fertilize the field 3 times per cycle, each at a specific point of growth, in order to net those same yields.

I see. It's not exactly worrying about nitrogen use efficiency, but at least you can't dump fertilizer on a crop already in the bin. Also, who the heck is fertilizing 3 times a cycle!?
I haven't played any FS yet, I've just been watching the thread because it interests me. Do crop rotations and the like have an impact on yields? Are there different climates to play in? I've gotten a little bit of the impression that this is less a farming simulator than a farming equipment simulator...

For stuck vehicles, you can go to your vehicle inventory and do a 'recall' to place it back in the starting area.

There's 3 stages of growth for crops (seeding, sprouting, maturation). You need to fertilize at each stage to increase yields (30% more each round).
Crop rotations do increase yield as well as regular plowing (new to the series).
FS13/15 have standard mods for advanced soil management (pH level, weeding, etc.). I expect these to be transferred over to FS17 in the coming weeks.

I took a look at the mod at the other end of your link and my urge to purchase is definitely rising. Has anyone tried any of the multiplayer functionality?
The online community for FS has traditionally always been hopping. Due to the "work together' nature of the game, online pops seem to skew older and friendlier.
Seems like the game's Steam forum is always looking for players to join.
I understand that the net-code is quite solid as well.
Is there weather in this game? Or seasons even? Looking for some sort of sim for my christmas stocking this year and can't decide between this or one of the truck simulators. Nice weather would be a +
Edit: And when I say nice, I mean not nice, like rain, snow etc.
Rain and Fog, but no snow.
Honestly, if you're looking for Christmas cheer you might be best off going with Euro Truck Simulator 2. The product is far more matured on the mod front and you should have zero problems finding Christmas-themed weather and texture packs.
Steam sale starts in a couple/few days. You should be able to nab ETS2 for around $6-$8 then.
I still think FS is a better game, but ET seems closer to what you're looking for.
Thanks for that Aaron, that is the direction I was leaning in. If FS gets a good discount I might snag both anyway.
I think this is the latest Farming Simulator thread, so this new trailer for Pure Farming (from Techland) goes here!
