NaNoWriMo 2016

Who's in for 2016? I had/have every intent of participating this year, but some work events are popping up that might interfere. I'd still like to try. Who's with me?

If you are unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo (Short for National Novel Writing Month), the elevator pitch is that it is an all in good fun attempt to commit to writing 50k words during the month of November. For more details, see the official site at NaNoWriMo.org

I'd love to have another stab at this but I just have too much schoolwork and tight deadlines this year to focus on it properly... I'll maybe see if I can do SOMETHING small unofficially instead.

I'm in! I'm unemployed this November so I have no (valid) excuse for not doing it

Y'know what, screwit, I've added an entry to my Nanowrimo page. There's zero chance I'll have the time to do anything close to 50,000 words but I have always wanted to have a stab at doing some horror short stories, so... I'll see what I can do.

Thanks! I made that post in haste on impulse Friday night and have been meaning to add more detail. I just haven't gotten around to it, yet.

That's what I figured, so I thought I'd help you out

I won't be able to write anything close to 50.000 words, as I've got to grade about 50 exams and tests next month and I hope to find some time playing Tyranny. Still, I find the idea of NaNoWriMo rather exciting.

Well, I'm in again. I'm 3 for 8 in past NaNos so let's see if I can make it to 4 for 9.

Here's my profile if people want to add me as a writing buddy: http://nanowrimo.org/participants/we...

I'm not sure if we want to list these in the OP. I'm happy to do so if people want that.

Good to see so many GWJs battling those words!

I'm debating as I have a number of smaller writing projects to work on in November. Maybe I do some additional work and declare myself a "rebel" by counting all my projects towards the word count.

Then again, I'm not sure why they do November instead of say January. Not only is it a short month but there's Thanksgiving and Christmas prep.

I'm in, but likely working on a very much smaller goal than the full 50k words.

I was not considering it before today, but now I am.

Everyone ready to go? It all kicks off at 12 PM tonight!

Tor.com has an article with words of support from some of the authors they publish.

I'm actually starting to stress about this a little already. I already knew work would be playing havoc with my schedule this month, but it's starting earlier than I expected in ways I hadn't planned for. I'm already starting to have issues finding time to write and I haven't even started writing yet! I'm still looking forward to trying, though.

As ready as someone with a whole LOT of art & design homework can be. I'm not setting myself any minimum goals really. If I can get a couple of short stories worth written then I'll consider that a win.

Good luck to you all!

There are two people doing it in my town, and we met earlier today for coffee and outline writing. I managed to do more than I thought.

I'm ready!

I'm in. I have a metric butt-ton of grad school and other work to do this month so this is probably a terrible time, but there's also no time like the present to actually start writing so here we go.

905 words so far. Which is more than I'd expected to get a chance to write today. So that's a plus!

I wanted to use an older laptop we have around here for this so I could just take it wherever and not be stuck at my desk. It turns out we haven't used it in over a year. I am stuck in update hell. Not even sure if this windows is updating or frozen. I really should have thought about this yesterday.

Edit: All updated and ready to go!

Also, great job, Pyxistyx! That's an excellent start, especially at the beginning. I always find beginning any new piece of writing especially hard. Beginnings and endings both really give me a lot of trouble.

All right, 2066 words. Not bad for a first day... I'm burning through my outline a lot faster than I thought, though.

We're getting towards the end of the first week of NaNoWriMo. How is everyone doing?

I had a good first day, putting in just over 1700 words (Roughly the amount I need to stay on track if I write every day.), but wasn't able to write on Wednesday or Thursday. I'd like to hit 10k by the end of this weekend and I'm at a little over 4k now. I'm going to have a tough time staying on target because we have a bunch of people from our various international offices in town over the next two weeks and we have a lot of social meet ups after work. I don't have to attend all of them, but I really should attend some since these are people I work with almost daily but have never actually met in person.

Despite the stress of trying to balance everything, I'm really enjoying the writing. My story is terrible, and my writing fundamentals are as well, but I'm starting to think about really putting some effort into changing that. Instead of just waiting for November as an excuse to write, I'm thinking about making it a more permanent hobby. I'm not sure if that drive will stick around after NaNoWriMo ends, but we'll see.

just what I've done above. Haven't had the chance since then to do much more, but I'll probably do a bit more later today. Just dealing with some illustration homework first.

As of last night I'm sitting at 8,360. Haven't done anything yet today but hope to clear 10k by tonight.

Also, how many of you have seen this: Nimble Writer

It's a word processor for writing stories and novels. On Steam.

IT HAS ACHIEVEMENTS!

Oh, wow. That's weird, but interesting! I've been using FocusWriter, which I like a lot. I'll have to check this out at some point, though.

I'm not aiming for 50k this year. I've done it in the past, and that's not an objective I'm interested in anymore. My goal is really to figure out where my story is going to go. Once I have enough material, I will probably just stop. My daily goal is 1000 words and, so far, I'm averaging at 1100, so I'm in good shape (considering an objective of 30k).

The thing still feels like an Agatha Christie novel rather than something else. Not that it's a bad thing.

The fact that I'm writing this with the idea of turning it into a comic book script later really changes a lot in the writing itself. The thing is almost 80% dialogue, and there is very little action. Not sure how that is going to translate, other than into having pages and pages of talking heads. I might have to try to put some more action into it. The part I am currently writing probably won't get drawn until mid to late 2017, so I have plenty of time for edits and rewrites and scene rearranging.

Or I could just change the conclusion of the first chapter and have the story go into a completely different direction. Mmh, that's an interesting idea...

And I'm done for today at 10,082. Going well so far, though at some point I really need to get back to the main plot and stop worrying about my MCs personal life...

Edit: Now at 11,867. Thought I had done better today. Oh well. Should hit the 25% mark tomorrow.
