[Discussion] On Television, Cinema and Race

Thread for race issues in media.

Birth Of a Nation
This movie isn't do so good. I think this is because black people are tired of slave type movies, white people don't want the white guilt, and everybody else is turned off by the rape case. I mean this in general. This is just a perfect storm for the downfall of the movie.

Surviving Compton
Straight out of compton left out the ladies. This lifetime show means to correct that. I believe all of the production was done by women.

Mulan live.
All Chinese cast. Maybe the dumb choices of Gods of Egypt are over.

edit: eh, then again, this would not make the world a better place.

Not sure if sports would be considered media. Anyway I've been following a bit on the half Japanese half Haitian tennis player Naomi Osaka

She was born in Japan but lived most of her life in the US. The article says she is representing Japan though.

Just seen all the drama over the Serena Naomi match. To bad Naomi's win was soured by the drama. I think Serena was correct though in stating it wouldn't have happen in a mens match.

Yeah did John McEnroe ever get penalized for his anger management issues? If anything I feel like his on court antics only earned him endearment.

Edit: looked it up and he was fined many times and got himself a point penalty, but never a full game penalty. Given how much more often he expressed anger on the court however, one is inclined to think he got off pretty lightly.

He got a dq when he lost count of how many infractions in a match he had incurred and went one too many.

The analyst on Belgian TV said yesterday that this specific ref is known as a very strict one, and one that isn't afraid to go hard on male stars either. She also said though that in general it's absolutely the case that men get more leeway with verbal aggression. The sideline coaching rules are even more laughable. Is forbidden officially, but everyone does it.

Someone put up a bunch of youtube videos of the refs calls and calls from other people. The latest one from this ref being from the french open of 2017 and none having game penalties.

That's sad and unsurprising.

McEnroe has been given a game penalty before. He’s even one of the rare ones who’s been disqualified from an entire match for poor behaviour.

Interestingly a few refs are considering boycotting Serena's games.

They need to spend more time cutting up their Nike gear.

When she's losing games she's also losing her temper it seems.

Amazing amount of perception you seem to have! How were you able to sort through all the variables to come to such a novel conclusion?

In other news, baseball players that strike out tend to react much differently than ones that hit home runs. Seems to be worth investigating!

That gentleman appears to be African-American. Please stand by as I draw a political cartoon in which I depict him with exaggerated features acting in a manic way. Surely I’m not being racist despite hundreds of years of political cartoons doing that very thing.

I've used my super fine-tuned powers of deduction. However, those powers have yet to help me figure out why this is being talked about in a thread like this.

Because sports for most of us basically are media and the biggest sports organizations regularly prove themselves just as racist and bigoted as a lot of other media?

I might be more likely to side with the org in this case, players losing their sh*t on refs is never a good look, but we literally just watched the whole catsuit mess happen in just the last couple weeks. That was *total bullsh*t*. So the org gets absolutely zero benefit of the doubt here.

Racist in one way, likely racist in others.

I mainly posted it here because I didn't know there was a sports section. However, I kind of feel it fits better here. I think the issues here are more political than about the game itself. Like in the game forums I think people in the sports forum want to talk about the game not the politics. And like ThinJ said I feel it fits into media. I'm not watching this in person as much as I would like to. I'm watching this on my tv or computer.

As to the comment about Serena getting madder as she loses comes off as sexist and pretty much embodies her main complaint. Most good players get madder as they lose especially if they feel they have been wronged by the ref. They use that fire and play harder. And yet Serena is singled out and bringing on the racists angry black woman stereotype or the sexist emotional woman stereotype. I don't have to go back 20 plus years to pull off examples of other people doing far worse. McEnroe isn't the only player that has acted this way. I think it far more meaningful to compare recent games. My issue is Serena seems to be being treated differently, she tested for drugs more than others, her outfit is the wrong color, she gets penalties when other players don't. And the big one, talking about a boycott.

There is something else I have to point out. I haven't seen a single person that accused Serena of being overly angry or of always being combative talk about how Serena stopped the crowd from booing Naomi or how she hugged her after the match. Or how she put her arm around Naomi when she was crying. Since this doesn't fit the angry Serena narrative nobody talks about it. Granted I don't think it is worthy of comment. She only did what any decent person would have done but anyone trying to paint Serena as some kind of over the top female McEnroe is being dishonest by leaving this out.

On the local forum, the same people who started and contributed the the “Tiger Woods is a miserable person” threads last month, when his major transgression was playing at a higher level than he has for years moved on to “Serena is an embarrassment” this month.

But, you know, folks that constantly are “concererned” or “confused” about the actions of minorities constantly end up in threads wondering why people question their motives. But white folks all have an uncle or other relative that pulls the same “confusion” even though everyone is aware of their constant “concerns” as well as their history of “accidentally” saying other racist and offensive things.

It’s not only blacks that see and have an issue with the game racist concern trolls play, asking “innocent” questions to set up the perfect “Gotcha!” But white male fragility is a hell of a drug.

Also, the way Serena gets drug tested exponentially more than other players, including people who have doped.

I tend to be a bit of a stickler for rules, but ignoring the inequities in enforcement Williams in particular faces demonstrates a special kind of regard for rules over justice.

On a slightly related note Blackish had a episode canceled that dealt with Colin situation because they thought it was to political. Please baby baby please

The director is now doing shows for netflix so he has been out shaming his old network for the choice to cut the episode.

So a old writer for Sesame Street said Bert and Ernie are a gay couple. The producers have come out and countered saying they are just good friends. I don't know why my twitter feed is blowing up with this story. Since they are puppets that never show any attraction to one another it doesn't really matter. If they had a relationship like ms piggy and kermit or gonzo and his chicken then sure but they never go beyond friendship. It is like how star wars will state someone is gay but never show it, like purple hair lady. Also Finn and Poe forever. Best romance ever.

Instead of denying they are gay the producers should have just said they didn't give them any sexual attraction to either gender like most puppets. Who cares if people think they gay or friends. They probably should have a clearly gay couple though on the same level as kermit and piggy.

That is the response from Sesame Workshop.

They do. Their names are Bert and Ernie.

In my experience, the reactions go something like this:

The Sane: "Neat! Anyway, as I was saying..."

Reactionary Twitter: "WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE A BIG DEAL OUT OF THIS!! RABBLERABBLERABBLE!!"

Avenue Q did a much better job of handling this issue.

Voice actress talks about colorism in Wreck It Ralph 2

Princess Tiana is lighter in skin tone from the Princess and the Frog movie.

Along with what was done with Merida postBrave, I am utterly shocked.... no wait, the other thing.

What was cool about that link was that I didn't know they were going back to change the scene and make Tiana darker skinned / rounder nose and other features. I'm glad to see the backlash produced changes this time!

Just watching Rise of The Teenage Mutant Turtles. They have a black April character which made me think at how few black female main cartoon there are. It also made me think how many of the black female characters share the same personality. Or rather the few there are share the same personality. I think a few of them might be voiced by the same person also.

On the other hand I don't really watch that many western cartoons. I know the new marvel show has America Chavez which is the only upcoming cartoon with a POC I know of as a main character.
