PlayStation VR Catch-All

Let's Play Until Dawn: Rush of Blood - Ian and Chris get freaked out by clowns

That is a bummer PS VR Worlds isn't included in the base version since they're basically a bunch of demos. Watching them on the Giant Bomb stream will be enough for me likely.

The Verge's review:

All this adds up to a system that is, more than anything else, good enough. There’s no one game that justifies buying PlayStation VR, and no technical breakthrough that will revolutionize how you experience the medium. But it offers a balanced, interesting launch catalog and a headset that’s a joy to wear, with weak points that hurt the system but don’t cripple it.

Yep. That's definitely not something you would want to pay $40 for. It's definitely not a Wii Sports. I would maybe pay $5 for it just for Danger Ball, but that's it.

So far, given the reviews cropping up (Ars Technica also has a review up that hasn't been linked yet). It seems to be exactly what I expected if not a little more impressive given how cheap it is. Giant Bomb is demoing Super Hyper Cube right now which remains, along with Rez, the only game I plan on buying for it as of now. It seems like a really awesome game.

Thumper also looks really cool, though I guess not much will be lost by just playing it on Steam (and a regular monitor) instead.

There does seem to be a weird tracking issue that some headsets are having and some aren't. If you are perfectly still, there is some floatiness that occurs. It may end up being a big problem, but I can't really tell yet. The Giant Bomb people have had the issue trying it at home and on the stream. It may be hard to gauge how extensive the issue is. It seems some reviewers have the problem and some don't. Brad on Giant Bomb said Eurogamer apparently mentioned on twitter that they get a replacement headset that fixed the issue, but I don't know how accurate that is.

Well, the Giant Bomb stream ended. They're pretty baffled and are in wait and see if an update can fix the tracking. As is, it ruined the experience. They're actually pretty surprised how good the games look and run given the PS4 hardware. The tracking just doesn't work well enough. I'm not cancelling my preorder as of now, but I'm definitely going to keep an eye on this issue to see if a fix happens. It does seem to be an issue for some setups and not others given the reviews.

Are the VR versions of existing games a full price download or do you get upgraded to that version by default?

Tested is one of my go to sources for thoughtful VR coverage and they have their review up:

Verdict, a bit of a mixed bag, but probably a buy for those of you with PS4s or anyone planning to go with the Pro.

Any word on whether the Pro will improve VR significantly? I understand framerate is important in VR, and this seems like a place where a pro would improve immensely on VR.

Framerate is important to the point that many people will get sick if it is too low, so that's a threshold they have to clear no matter what kind of PS4 you're playing on. Maybe some games could go from 90 on regular PS4 to 120 on Pro? My guess would be visual improvements, rather than performance ones, but you never know.

So tempted to cancel my bundle order after watching the first 20 minutes of that Giant Bomb PSVR experience.

I returned my Rift because I couldn't get over the SDE and God rays. From what I am seeing, PSVR doesn't suffer from those two specific problems, so I am just waiting for a must have game. I haven't seen it yet though.

I pulled this image from the Job Simulator PS VR launch trailer, it seemed somehow fitting...

Spoiler:

.

Just checking in to see what people think when they get hands on it.

I tried this today at Best Buy. As an annoying VR elitist, / evangelist, I have to say that it was surprisingly good. There's surprising amount of barrel distortion like Oculus has (but not the Vive). Lenses are nice, as is the reduced SDE. Games look surprisingly good but the low frame rate shows if you're used to 90fps. Tracking for the demo unit was spot on.

Verdict so far: if you want something that will "change the way you experience the medium" as the Verge out it, you need a Vive with roomscale (or maybe Oculus with Touch if it works as described), but PSVR is a much better gateway drug than, say, GearVR. It's going on my Christmas list for sure.

I put up a PlayStation Community and tried inviting everyone who has posted here that they had preorders in. "Gamers with Virtual Jobs" is an open community that welcomes anyone I may have missed inviting, and just anyone else period :D. I plan to lean on one community or another after launch in an attempt to experience some of what multiplayer is like in PSVR. I'm the only one of my friends who was brave (or foolish) enough to want a headset at launch, so I hope the community catches on (Especially before Star Trek: Bridge Crew releases ).

*groan* I'm so close to cancelling just because I really shouldn't spend the money until they get a few really seriously good games going. Just buying it to finally experience that ah-ha! moment and for Super hypercube and Rez isn't a good value proposition.

Playing Star Trek Bridge Crew with a few GWJers sounds soooooo fun, though.

I'm so in for Bridge Crew!

I could be up for that.

Sounds like PS VR has the opposite problem of Kinect: play space is somewhat restricted.

Just got the tracking info from FedEx, my system arrives tomorrow. Already picked up Eve Valkyrie for it (Amazon had it mismarked for $20) and just eager to get my hands on it.

Wow, tomorrow? I just checked and Amazon says mine is due Thursday and hasn't shipped yet.

And I missed out on the Eve Valkyrie deal - it was OOS by the time I got there...

This 1000 times. I've got a preorder but I'm in the 2nd batch of shipments for Oz. Hopefully it's not more than a few weeks.

Looks like Sony is going to be short on some of the pre-orders. We have one pre-ordered as a gift for my brother but looks like it will not be in time. PM me if anyone has one that they no longer want. Currently no update when our pre-order will get it. We are going to attempt at stores Thursday but do not like our chances.

Skraut, good luck to you getting your system early, but I won't be surprised if that estimated delivery time changes--when I get pre-ordered stuff by FedEx, it often lists an estimated delivery day of before the official release day, only to be updated to the proper day later on. But if you get lucky and have an over-eager shipper, enjoy!

escher77, where did you pre-order from? Have they told you you're delayed/back-ordered? Or just no shipping info yet. I've got my pre-order through Best Buy, still marked as "preparing" without shipping info yet...keeping my fingers crossed, I won't really worry about a delay unless it's still not shipped by Wednesday night. Hope you manage to find one.

edited to add: Just got my Best Buy shipping info! Can't wait for Thursday.

How do you know they're going to be short?

According to my wife it was delivered an hour or so, hopefully I'll be able to check it out after work. I was one of the Taco Bell winners, and part of the prize was getting it "early." I saw some people putting it on Ebay trying to sell it there for way over price trying to sell to those who wanted it before "day 1."

I sort of doubt I'll be able to use it much for the next few days though, as my Mother in law is staying with us and living in the room with the PS4

Yessssssssssssssssssssssss my PS VR is shipping today. Wooooo!
