PlayStation VR: the ultimate FAQ

UploadVR has been running a list of 50 game previews leading up to release.

What games/experiences are everyone looking forward to trying after launch?

edit: that works too.

I bought one. I'm about as enthusiastic as the night before my prep for a colonoscopy.

Cautiously optimistic myself.

I see lots of potential for combining the two.

I'm excited to try Rez and Super Hypercube. It'll be interesting to see how this whole thing plays out.

Yes. This is a good joke.

My flatmate has one on preorder, combined with my Oculus Rift we will be living in a VR house.

It seems to me that this actually might be a successful VR launch:

  • Demo disc to let everyone try out lots of games
  • Big launch line up
  • Building on a pre-existing huge install base of PS4 owners
  • Cheap price in comparison to the other headsets

I missed out on the pre-order option, I wasn't fast enough to pull the trigger. But after demo'ing it a few months back I will definitely be picking one up. I wonder how quickly they will be available to non pre-order folks.

I love my Vive and don't technically need a PSVR, but I *may* have been eating more Taco Bell than usual lately...

"Just in case our food wasn't enough to make you hurl... Win a PSVR!"

It's no Sneak King VR.

Now I want a Sneak King VR.

I know this is the route that I've been going (the Taco Bell part I mean).

I'll be back when you're all ready to start discussing Hatsune Miku: VR Future Live.

side note can we edit the hero image to remove that douche Palmer?

I have my reservations, but I did preorder and am looking forward to giving it a go. Rez will likely be a pretty awesome experience, but it's one of my favorite games. If they can have an archery game as fun as the one I played on Vive I'll be happy... that totally made me feel like Legolas!

I'm also curious to try out the virtual screen, just for fun, even though I already have a projector.

I've got my pre-ordered bundle ready. I found myself with a bit of Amazon credit, so I pre-ordered "Loading Human" because I'd like to have an adventure game to try, and "Werewolves Within" because it sounds like a really unusual game (tho not coming out until December). And I'm sure with the demos that will be available, I'll find some other things to play too. I've never gotten my hands on any VR other than trying Google's Cardboard on my phone, so I am super excited about this (even if I won't be shocked if six months from now I find I'm rarely using the PSVR for anything).

Dammit, now I am rethinking my PSVR preorder...

Because Google

It is wireless, cheap, can be used for movies/tv. PSVR was supposed to be the first real somewhat low cost entry into VR (Google Cardboard aside). Now I see PSVR-versus-Daydream in the same vein as the Vita-versus-phone handheld gaming space. Sure, the Vita has buttons and is therefore far superior to touch gaming, but the cost and convenience using your phone generally outweighs the benefits that the Vita owns. Just like with mobile gaming, the VR space is generally going to be shorter experiences than normal hardcore gaming, so do I really need the extra power and buttons that PSVR gives me?

Maybe it makes sense to go with Daydream for now until VR becomes mainstream and standardized...

Side note: I'm kinda surprised that Daydream wasn't built with the same cast functionality that Chromecast uses. They could have had all sorts of apps with day one support for it...

For $80, it's definitely cheap to try.

I've got a preorder in, looking forward to Rez and Super HyperCube. Not looking forward to potentially yaking all over my living room.

Kotaku has posted a lengthy review of Playstation VR. Largely unfavourable.

Summary? Several glitches. Substandard components (particularly, the PS4 camera but also the Move controllers). Speculation that some of these issues might be mitigated by PS4 Pro.

I was on the fence before this review, but now I'm definitely out. Adding in a PS4 Pro takes Playstation VR from being a £400+ purchase to a £800+ purchase. For me that's inconsistent with one the traditional benefits of console gaming: comparatively low costs.

If Kotaku is correct, then this will not end well.

US Gamer has a semi-positive review. The writer comes away impressed by VR's potential and the fun to be had with the PS VR, but he's left thinking that it's a technology that's not quite there yet.

Some of his complaints are specific to the PS VR, and some of them are more general complaints about VR itself.

Giant Bomb messed around with it (at time of posting, are currently messing around with it).

I haven't watched any Giant Bomb stuff today, but their feelings on it are what I'll go by. They have a ton of experience with all the VR systems, so I think they can give a good yay or nay on it.

I don't know about Giant Bomb, but the Kotaku review mentioned earlier felt significantly more negative thanks to constant comparisons to the Oculus and Vive. Comparing this system to ones three or four times more expensive might no be the best route to take.

Having tried Vive and GearVR now, I'm definitely not getting any headset until they just about double the resolution. The image just isn't clear enough yet, you cannot just see the pixels, you can see the subpixels. PSVR being even lower resolution than Vive and Oculus, I can't see that not being a huge downside.

I've been watching the Giant Bomb coverage on and off this morning--even accepting their concerns about the jitteriness, some of those games look really neat, and I remain excited. Though I imagine I might feel differently if I already owned, or had ever even used, a Vive or Rift.

Anyone have any thoughts/relevant experience re selling my extra preorders on eBay? Worried about scarcity and the small chance of a store overselling their preorder, I have ended up with preorders for two core units that I won't need. Looks like on ebay I could make an extra $100-150 per headset, but I'm a little worried I'm setting myself up to get ripped off by an eBay scammer or ending up in a situation where after eBay fees and overnight shipping I end up with a minimal profit. Would I be foolish to just cancel the extra orders, or is it not worth the hassle/risk?

I'm pretty familiar with Kirk Hamilton's thoughts on the other headsets, so I'm not at all surprised. Giant Bomb has looked at the games extensively, and none of the other headsets have sold me on any of the games given their impressions. Most of them haven't bought any headsets yet either. At any rate, they seem to be having some difficulties at Giant Bomb now on the stream, so that may overshadow everything for PSVR.

I'm mostly curious how the games are.

Must be a day for reviews, UploadVR has 2 separate VR review pages up: PlayStation VR Review: The Future of Console Gaming Has Arrived & PlayStation VR: A Hardcore Console Gamer’s Perspective.

They also have several games up for review:
Tumble VR
SUPERHYPERCUBE
Wayward Sky
PlayStation VR Worlds
Until Dawn: Rush of Blood
Battlezone
Batman: Arkham VR

* At the time of posting, I have read none of the reviews I've posted, nor any reviews posted above. Since my PSVR headset is already paid for, I'd rather be ignorant of others' opinions until I have it in my hands. I may read some PSVR game reviews but, again, not the ones I've already purchased/pre-ordered (PlayStation Worlds VR, Bound, & 100ft Robot Golf).

Eurogamer has a fairly favorable review of the hardware up. http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2016-sony-playstation-vr-review
