I'm looking for a Diablo-like game but one that is sci-fi based. Like with lasers and grenades and power armor. All of the ones I can find are fantasy-based or over 10 years old, or squad based instead of single character. Any ideas?
Star Siege?
Oh wait, you said "good". Never mind.
Darkspore sort of fits that description, though with more gene-modding. Also I'm genuinely not sure if I'd call it good...it might be, but I don't know if I'd be able to stand by saying that without replaying it first. And it's currently impossible to play, due to the DRM server being shut off.
So probably not Darkspore.

It wasn't horrible, but it was a pretty cookie-cutter ARPG. The coolest thing they did was allow you to roll with 3 different characters at a time which you could swap in and out at will.
Alien Swarm was pretty good back in the day. And it's free! It's not really loot driven. But it was hard and it REQUIRED good co-op skills. It's pretty much rips off the movie Aliens. But in a good way.
Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team might fit the bill.
Keep your eye on Ruiner which is a pending cyber-punk arpg supposedly due to release this year.
edit: hmm, steam page says 'action-shooter' rather than arpg, but I could have sworn the aim was to be an arpg.
Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team might fit the bill.
In a similar vein, maybe not quite the same, but Dawn of War 2 was a bit Diablo-ish.
Would Neon Chrome fit the bill?
I don't think any of these fit the bill, but if Ruiner and Neon Chrome satisfy you then you might look into Helldivers as well. Helldivers is mostly about tactical prowess, but there is a fair bit of progression in unlocks both through completing missions and spending research points.
I think one of the things all these games (Alien Swarm, Ruiner, etc) lack is a levelling system that affects your damage output/hp/etc. These games have unlocks and stuff that make you more powerful but still your character never changes, with the exception of the way the items affect you.
Warhammer 40,000: Kill Team might fit the bill.
Seconded. Twinstick shooter. Massacre Orks by the billions.

Saw the thread title and I was coming here to say Alien Swarm too. It's definitely multiplayer only though, so if you play Diablo solo then I'd look elsewhere.
Alienation
Destiny?
Grim Dawn isn't really fantasy, but actually taking place after our time, even though demons and such exists.
That means you have rifles, flamethrowers and the like, on top of your basic magic stuff and swords and the like. Some classes have actual grenades as well.
Not 100 percent what you want, but I figured I'd mention it.
If you're willing to expand it to roguelikes...
Beacon is a sci-fi action roguelike. Still in development but probably the closest to what you're looking for.
Nuclear Throne -Top-down post-apocalyptic shooter
Teleglitch - real-time roguelike top-down shooter
Death Road to Canada - zombie action RPG
Eldritch is first-person Lovecraft action game
Enter the Gungeon is a gunfight dungeon crawler top-down shooter
For platforming roguelikes, there's Risk of Rain and Red Rogue.
Then there's weirdness like Galactic Arms Race, a top-down shooter with genetically-evolving weapons or Duskers, where you guide a team of robot drones.
Turn-based roguelikes:
The upcoming Jupiter Hell is a graphical spiritual sequel to Doom RL.
Cogmind is very, very pretty.
Caves of Qud is science fantasy set in the far future of fallen civilizations.
GearHead: Arena - Mecha
Sword of the Stars: The Pit
bah damn, unsworn looks to have become vaporware :/
Star Siege?
Oh wait, you said "good". Never mind.
You shut your damn mouth. SHUT IT. STAR SIEGE WAS GREAT AND YOU ARE A DOO-DOO HEAD.
Unless, we're talking about the same game?
Bah, Space Siege was what I was thinking of, not Star Siege.
IGNORE ME!
I haven't played it yet, but Helldivers looks like it might fit the bill, and I heard good things.
Of all those mentioned, Drox Operative is definitely the most Diablo-like, although the story isn't really there.
Grim Dawn is part of the next monthly humble bundle. Guess it's worth a shot for a few dollars, and get some games.
Helldivers is not a sp game, it's a mp game and is not at all like Diablo, it's a twin stick coop shooter. All action and some strategy here. Combat encounters are kept kinda small.
Alienation, sadly only PS4 because it's from Housemarque, is what you're looking for. It is a bit light on the loot compared to Diablo, but it's a great game.
Drox Operative is definitely a good choice, but Alienation is more in line with what he's asking. Yall are given a pass for not talking about Alienation because you haven't played it yet.
What was that cooperative free game from Valve that had was basically horde-mode Alien with four people? Alien Swarm or something? That seemed pretty good.

Yep, mentioned up thread somewhere. It play much better multiplayer though.
Marvel Heroes may scratch your itch also. It's not quite scifi in the way you may want, but it's definitely not orks and elves.
Veloxi's suggestion of Neon Chrome is also on point, but that game is a roguelike twin stick shooter with some loot elements, but it's very much a roguelike first and foremost.
Neocore's upcoming Inquisitor Martyr game may be the closest thing on the horizon to a sci-fi ARPG. Whether the 40k universe scratches your sci-fi itch is another question entirely.
Grim Dawn is a great game, but the tech level and aesthetics seem to come from a Lovecraftian version of the 1850s, so I would hesitate to call it a sci-fi game. Neocore's Van Helsing ARPGs have a much more technologically infused steampunk setting.
Space Siege was an absolute travesty. I so badly wanted that game to be great. I loved the Dungeon Siege games and I just wanted more of the same, but set in the future.
Halo Spartan Assault is a twin stick shooter as well.
Space Siege could have been great but ended up being very average. (and short if I recall)
Ohhh, Red Solstice might also fit the bill:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/26...
It doesn't have random levels, but the massive levels get randomized objectives and such each time you play. It's awwwwwesome.
