Apple Operating Systems (macOS, iOS, watchOS, & tvOS) Catch-All

I ordered one of those ridiculous battery cases yesterday. I want more battery life, but I really don’t want to pack around an 8+.

I'm pretty sure that feature is built into the Google Search app - at least it used to be. I stopped using it a while back because I didn't find it all that useful.

I'm still all about good old fashioned rss via Feedly. If you want "smarter" news apps try Flipboard or Apple News.

PaladinTom is correct: Google News is built off of your searches in a google and your info in the Google Cloud.

Flipboard is likely better than a Apple News overall.

EverythingsTentative wrote:

That lives in the Google app itself, but there's also Apple News for articles...but I just use the Google app.

Okay, cool. I already had to Google app installed.

What does the blue dot beside some app names mean?

On Android I had an app called FlySo. It was essentially Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram in one. Anything like that here?

Edit: Does anyone have a work around to get apps to the bottom of the home screen?

Or even better... I use news.google.com in Safari which I have set to show all sites in Reader View automagically. Just long press the Reader View icon and tap "use on all sites."

Suvanto wrote:

Yeah, that's Samsung. Other Android phones are less like that, but the "pure" Android systems on Nexus and Pixel are much, much better.

EverythingsTentative wrote:

The blue dot means the app has been installed and you haven't used it yet or, more commonly, the app has been updated since you last used it.

If you subscribe to an app's beta/pre-release program via TestFlight, there's also a yellow/orange dot that appears next to the app name.

EverythingsTentative wrote:

It's been updated since the last time you opened it. You can go to App Store > Updates to read its update notes.

Edit: T-Primehausered.

Fill the top of the screen with other apps to push the ones you want to the bottom. Seriously.

This has been an issue since the launch of the iPhone and will likely never be fixed.

Edit: There is also a kludgy workaround that involves using black wallpaper and black dummy apps.

That's a clever trick, but man Apple looks ridiculous for not budging on this.

Agreed. I don't really even use the widget screen much. Force pressing icons to show the widgets is pretty nice though. I just don't get why Apple can't allow icons from the bottom up?

Do they justify it somehow or is it just stubbornness?

Do you have a Plus phone? If so, lightly double tap the home button and the whole screen will slide down to the halfway point.

I'm not sure. Probably because with the original iPhone you could actually reach the top left corner one handed and Steve wanted to the icons top/down/left/right "as it should be. "

I haven't owned an iPhone for it's entire run, but I know back in the day people were more upset about no app folders and no cut/copy/paste. It's such an old issue that everyone has just moved on now I guess.

I don't have a plus but my phone still has this feature. Which baffles me even more why you can't just put icons at the bottom.

It would make Jony Ive sad?

There are tons of baffling decision Apple makes because of design. The MacBook Pro has gotten materially worse as a computer. So much so that I'm considering changing operating systems. And Jony Ive DGAF.

Holy smoke. Now I understand why my screen sometimes gets stuck like that. I had no idea what was happening. Figured it was an odd bug with the gestures, not a one-handing feature.

You can turn it off too, as I have done for my whole family.

OOCT? Thus did teenaged Antichulius discover his new hobby.

Does anyone know how to force the security update for High Sierra? I'm a relative noob to macOS and I've checked the App Store, but there are no updates available.

I've gotta admit wifi password sharing is pretty cool. Not sure if that's something Android users can do since I am the only Android in the house.

I have updates set to automatically start, but they are not. I have cell data turned on too. Any suggestions?

The name of the feature/setting is "Reachability". Nearly as bad as the name "Force Touch". Nearly.

Yay I get to reuse my favorite Apple meme

If you're running High Sierra but not seeing the update in the Mac App Store, then it's already been applied automatically - the standard update settings allow the OS to do that sometimes if it's a high-importance update and isn't going to disrupt anything currently running. You might find it in the list of recently installed updates, but I'm not sure if automatic updates always show up there.

It's there in the list of previous updates for me.

I've been running my Mac Book in Windows Boot Camp lately (take that Apple! ) so I specifically rebooted into High Sierra to get the update. I don't see it listed in the recently installed updates. Hopefully it got it installed.

You can easily test whether your Mac is vulnerable - this article explains how to test it. Setting a password for the root account will prevent unauthorised root access if the fix hasn't been installed.

After spending a week with IOS I can definitely say I prefer Android. I was going to do a small pros and cons list, but I don't think anyone is that interested, plus it's all preference. There's nothing I couldn't get used to if I had to stay with IOS.

BTW: I got a phone for sale.

What phone did you get, again?

DSGamer wrote:

OnePlus 5T

If you are asking which iPhone I have for sale it's an 8, 64gig.
