Apple Operating Systems (macOS, iOS, watchOS, & tvOS) Catch-All

Catch-all thread for discussing Apple's operating systems: macOS, iOS, watchOS, & tvOS

So iOS 10 launched today, as did tvOS 3 and watchOS 3.

So far I've updated my iPhone and iPad and one Apple TV. All three installed with no problems. (There's already reports of some installation issues.)

First off, the tvOS does NOT include the single sign on feature for television provider apps. That's supposedly coming 'this fall.' I was really waiting for that feature.

As for iOS, the change you notice immediately is that you now have to press the home button to unlock your phone. Thankfully you can revert to the old way: go to Settings - General - Accessibility - Home Button and turn on 'Rest Finger to Open.'

I'll play around some more and post anything interesting.

I updated apparently too early and got whacked with the bug..

no clue what my current icloud backup looks like but yay for having to redownload 20 or so GB of music and another 60GB in photos/videos and apps.

stupid Apple.

What iPhone models have folks installed iOS 10 on?

I have a 5S, so I won't get all the new features, and am wondering what 10 will do for performance and battery life near the old end of the supported hardware range.

That sucks Guru.

I installed on my 6 and now my work 5s. Can't comment yet on battery life on either as I haven't used them much. Without force touch on my devices, the new features aren't game changing in my opinion.

I was caught off guard to see that iPod Tough 5G won't be supported. I have said device and I also have an iPhone 5S. I'm wondering that if I upgrade the 5S, will I have problem with certain cloud features across the 2 devices. That would be a major pain.

My wife is getting a SE. She just loved the form factor of the 5s and doesn't want something bigger. So no 3D Touch for her, but I guess we'll put the new OS on it this week.

It seems snappier to me. They've tweaked the animations so at the very least it is definitely different.

Stickers and message apps seem dumb, but Im probably too old to get it.

I really like the daily My Favorites mix.. whatever spying Apple is doing on my listening habits really spoke to me this morning on my commute to NYC

Yeah, I'm loving the shortened animations. If your phone is fast enough to bring up an app faster, don't throttle it with an animation. Very good change.

These larger, rounded lock screen notifications in iOS10, I do not like them.

I have a 5S. There's a noticeable hitch when expanding notifications, but everything else feels normal so far. Battery life I can't say yet, but Ars' preview suggests it's similar to iOS 9.

The overhaul to Messages is the biggest adjustment. A few bugs so far like the send button disappearing. I like GIFs and emoji, so I'm served well enough. Stickers will be great for my kid and I already downloaded the Sago Mini pack. I wish I could hide Digital Touch already.

I really like the new Today View, especially the Up Next widget, and how available it and Spotlight are (no more leaving an app to do a unit conversion!). But I turned all the lock screen and home button settings back to be iOS 9ish. If my phone gets stolen, I don't want the thief to see my whole day. That's the point of a lock screen. I don't hang my calendar on my front door.

I started using Bedtime for my morning alarm too, so we'll see how that goes. I like how it has its own volume setting independent of music and the ringer; I don't like that you can't preview that volume when picking an alarm.

In writing this post, I've noticed that Define in the pop-up options has been replaced with Look Up. There doesn't seem to be a way to customize the sheet, so every time I look up a word I'm also going to get a movie somehow related to that word. Real useful. [Edit: Found the setting under Spotlight Search.]

The new Photos stuff is great too, especially the overdue inclusion of face recognition. With that bit of parity between Photos and Photos.app/iPhoto, I think for someone like my mom who only uses a computer for email, browsing, and photos, an iPad could be her new full-featured laptop. Space grey is the new aluminum.

I kinda like the bigger notifications. Makes it seem a bit roomier and easier to hit.

However, I hate hate HATE that you need force touch to get the 'clear all notifications' feature. Why can't long press be used?! Same goes for the control center icons as well - a simple long press should suffice. Sheesh.

I dislike them as well, the color especially. While I like that the buttons on control center media player are bigger, I don't like that you have to do two swipes to reach them.

Still on the fence about the half a click unlocks the screen thing, It just seems a bit too fiddly. At least it can be toggled off.

First thing I did was change the home button back to login on fingerprint rather than having to click.

macOS Sierra is out. The aesthetics of the hero image are such that I didn't realize it was right there at the top of the App Store.

Oh hey, yeah, there it is. I kept expecting it to show up under, oh you know, "Updates".

Sierra installed ...and I'm hard-pressed to notice the difference [edit: after a reboot to make sure my Boot Camp partition is okay there's now a Siri icon in the menubar]. I lost my PPTP VPN, but I only used that for the easiest streaming-blocking-getting-arounding. Don't use Siri, not worried about disk space, don't have an Apple watch, don't (can't?) use Apple Pay... well I guess tabs in more apps will be nice. And when I copy something on my phone and then stupidly hit paste on my computer, that will actually work.

This is the sign of a mature platform, right? Honestly, in terms of tentpole features OS X hit perfection for me once Exposé, Spotlight, and then Time Machine were introduced. Everything since then is just refinement. (And Windows 10 has still only, and recently, got two of those. )

Did they remove support for PPTP VPN's? ugh that sucks.

They did, yeah.

FYI: To enable picture-in-picture with YouTube, right-click on the video, then right-click again to get the context menu that has the "Enter Picture-in-Picture" option.

I just read that there is no podcast player on Apple Watch OS3 and 3rd party apps aren't permitted to use local storage. That destroys my dreams of an all-in-one workout watch. I would be hopeful for Android Wear 2.0 but that seems to be a side project for google at this point.

Yup, that's a deal breaker for me too.

What are you trying to do stream a podcast directly from the watch to a set of Bluetooth headphones paired with the watch?

Why not just do that directly to your phone and skip the whole watch?

I'd like to go out once in a while without the phone. Just a watch and Bluetooth headphones.

Yep, when I'm running or working out I don't want my phone on me. It is cumbersome and hard to operate when its strapped to my arm. I have also come close to damaging it a few times, when It's in my pocket, while using free weights.

Ahh yeah the limited screen I can imagine is the primary culprit. Difficult to browse and select podcasts. As well the device has no connectivity itself. You would need some sort of cellular connection and data plan which would kill battery. I think we are a few years away from battery tech that can support that use case.

Local storage makes a bit more sense since in theory you could sync locally from phone to watch for playback. But again even a modest amount of flash will take up space and power

@Guru

It has wifi, bluetooth for headphones, and 4GB of local storage so you can sync music too it. They just don't have a standalone podcast option. The built in music player won't work since it doesn't remember bookmarks. Same goes for the new Android watches. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be a standalone podcast app for Android Wear 2.0. They are both very close to my ideal workout companion, just a feature short.

Ahh didnt know it could sync music to the 4GB.. I was talking about running outside so wifi isnt that useful in that scenario.. at a gym it makes sense since you would likely have wifi.

Either way.. I agree not having a podcast app is kinda dumb.. a Feed UI would be easy enough on the watch.

The no cellular isn't a big deal for me. I already load my phone up with podcasts and music (offline mode) prior to running outside anyway.

Yeah I can't think of any good reason why they allow music to sync and store but not podcasts. Just seems like a software gap.
