[Discussion] Trans Issues and Rights

This thread is for the discussion of current events relating to trans rights, for discussion of the lives of trans people and difficulties they face, and for basic questions about the lives and experiences of trans people. (If basic questions become dominant we'll look at making a Q&A thread at that time.)

Diversity is important period. It should be pushed. Everywhere. You are creating a false choice when you propose that trans actors can play other roles in that movie and this cancel out the casting misstep.

Yes, trans actors can play other roles in the movie (even cis roles.) But a cis actor shouldn’t play that role. Institutional discrimination is a thing, and it requires anger and *work* to change. Listening to trans people in this thread and other places is part of that work. Defending Scarjo isn’t.

It would be a great opportunity for anyone, and lack of representation is a vicious circle. Roles like these are given to big name cis actors over trans actors because of name recognition, but many trans actors lack the name recognition because they lose out to cis actors for roles like these. You have to break the circle at point.

Agreed.

Which trans actress has the same name recognition and drawing power as Scarlett Johansson? Guaranteed to deliver a performance to par, or better? That's the motive. This is not an indie flick. That person may exist. Multiple may. But employers go for experience in the areas that help secure the bottom line.

If this were an unkown actress or a lesser draw it would be hugely insulting and discriminatory.

How do trans actors and actresses get to Scarlett Johansson's level? That's the difficulty. We effectively need to be out front with picket signs for every movie that ignores trans performers. In every role. Not just the blockbusters with a trans role. Although that's where the media spotlight is and where the most effect will be had. Ends. Means.

So you agree Johanssen should not have taken this part because we're not yet living in the scenario you think we should aspire to? Then I'm not sure what or who you've been disagreeing with.

Actually, it should be a trans man actor, not a trans woman.

Or, failing that, at least a cis man and not a woman at all.

And it really ought to be someone who looks at least vaguely like the person they're portraying. Who... didn't look even a little bit like Johansson. So if they felt they absolutely had to cast a cisgender woman or something it ought to be someone like Melissa McCarthy.

There is a *lot* of sh*t wrong with this casting.

This has just ruined me the last few days. I can't imagine how much pain inside can lead to inflicting that incomprehensible amount of physical pain.

Trying to think of 3 trans actors who've been asked to play any role but a trans character.

Show me the cis actors who are losing out on cis roles to trans actors and we'll talk.

i get that everyone wants to stan for black widow or whatever, but let's get something straight. trans actors don't get parts playing trans people because they "don't look trans" while cis people with name recognition portray insipid flattening caricatures of actual trans people and actual history, and each and every time it's the same excuse

ugh

ScarJo's a producer on the flick. She didn't "win" anything, she cast herself.

e: In as much as anyone can 'win' a part playing a trans person when most every filmmaker looks at us like curiosities to be gawped at/mocked/pitied/actors in cis inspiration porn instead of people and only wants to portray that stereotype

London Pride forced to say sorry after letting TERFS lead the parade because a few of them laid down in the middle of the road blocking the march. (This been the BBC, they have to allow response from the other side, even if the other side are just plain wrong so warning for transphobic langauge)

In reponse both Leeds and Brighton Pride come out and say that no such nonsense would be allowed to happen at their prides.

Seriously though, I have no idea how it was allowed to happen at London Pride, which can't seem to go by without causing issues (last year it was complete lack of any Bisexual Groups, before that they allowed UKIP to march...) wonder if it's the same people running it?

London Pride seems pretty clueless. While that was all going on they were happily tweeting their sponsors and ignoring their mentions.

From CNN: Scarlett Johansson won't play trans man in film after backlash

CNN wrote:

Scarlett Johansson has opted to withdraw from a film in which she was set to play a transgender man after her casting drew criticism from the LGBTQ community.
Johansson said an exclusive statement to Out.com that her decision was made "in light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting."

Scarlett Johansson wrote:

Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I've learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive. I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues.

Scarlett Johansson wrote:

While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante's story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film.

Pity it took a colossal backlash and her invoking Jared Leto and Jeffrey f*cking Tambor first to finally do the right thing, but she's earned a participation trophy I guess.

I can imagine why 'David' wants to keep his identity secret, since he just admitted to fraud.

Emphasis mine:

Amendment of sex on a record of birth — affidavit requirement

16.2 An application under section 16.1 must include an original affidavit executed by the applicant, setting out the following information about the person whose record of birth is to be amended:

(a) the person’s name as it appears on the record of birth and any other name used;

(b) the person’s date of birth;

(c) the amendment to the sex on the record of birth that is requested;

(d) a statement confirming that the person identifies with and is maintaining the gender identity that corresponds with the requested amendment to the sex on the record of birth.

All to save about $91 a month.

"I'm a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I'm a woman," he said.

"I did it for cheaper car insurance."

David says he's aware the methods he used to become a woman on paper are designed for Albertans who need to correct the gender marker on their identification to reflect who they really are. But he says his target was the insurance industry, not the gender diverse community.

"I didn't do it to point out how easy it is to change genders," he said. "I didn't do it to criticize or ridicule transgender or LGBT rights."

And now the usual cavalcade of right-wing reactionaries are going to use this to make all trans Albertans' lives harder. What an asshole.

"I did it for cheaper car insurance."

Just..f*ck this guy.

So there's some stuff making the rounds. The first paper that managed to get published about how "Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria" is a thing has been taken back and is being looked at again (because the science is rubbish). This is, of course, a sign of the shadowy trans cabal that rules academia. Or something. Anyway, here's a breakdown of the whole thing in case you run into some of this mess:

Everything You Need to Know About Rapid Onset Gender Dysphoria
(Julia Serano, Medium, 2018-08-22)

(And yes, the paper I mentioned above is the one Serano mentions in PLOS One, who have retracted it to take a longer look at the methods despite the truth about what Serano says regarding their approach: "PLOS One, on the other hand, is not concerned with such matters, as they believe that the importance and relevance of an article should be determined by the scientific community post-publication (via debates and citations).")

Remember back when the right swore that Trump would be better than any other President ever for LGBT folks? Remember how that was never ever going to be true? Well, hey look here's an explicit attempt to erase the legal existence and any legal protections for trans people.

The department argued in its memo that key government agencies needed to adopt an explicit and uniform definition of gender as determined “on a biological basis that is clear, grounded in science, objective and administrable.” The agency’s proposed definition would define sex as either male or female, unchangeable, and determined by the genitals that a person is born with, according to a draft reviewed by The Times. Any dispute about one’s sex would have to be clarified using genetic testing.

Yet another disgusting, but completely on-brand, move from a disgusting administration.

This whole war on transgender issues, which has majorly kicked off over here in UK due to the government survey on the GRA, is a classic attempt at divide and conquer. Seperate the T from the rest and pick them off one by one. Above is where we are heading, and where groups like A Women's Place and Fair Play for Women want us to end up, which makes it harder when I see people I respected fall for it hook line and sinker.

Not a new event, but a friend of mine is a teacher and academic looking to collect resources for training future teachers about how to understand and respond to trans issues in their classrooms. If anyone knows of any good resources, I would love to share them, and she would appreciate it!

Well, here we go. The DOJ is prepared to argue it should be legal to fire a trans person for being trans.

DOJ: Businesses Can Discriminate Against Transgender Workers

We need more nuanced “liked“ option. Maybe a button that indicates how many people (respond with a stream of obscenities).

saw these in the wild in Edinburgh last weekend, which was nice.

The podcast crew will be doing charity streams this year as part of the Patreon drive results! The first stream we'll be doing is for Translifeline.org, and I'd like to convince the streamers to avoid playing certain devs/games during the streams that have created transphobic content in the past. This includes press, social media, and in-game content.

I'll be compiling a list if my own research and not looking to ask vulnerable populations to do my work for me. However, if anyone (especially those within the trans community) feel there are specific offenders that we should be sure to avoid, my DM's are open and I greatly appreciate the feedback. Ultimately, my goal here is to reduce potential harm.

Thank you, love you.

CD Project Red (Witcher series) and Atlus (Persona series, other JRPGs) both spring immediately to mind, CDPR for the transphobic statements from its GOG storefront, and Atlus for the transphobic content in all the Persona games and in Catherine.

Rockstar (GTA, Red Dead Redemption) have a terrible history of transphobic jokes in their games. Similarly, Ubisoft's Far Cry team had some transphobic garbage in Blood Dragon.

Nintendo has some ongoing issues with gender presentation in the Fire Emblem series, and they also have Birdo, who may or may not be trans, and who may or may not be seen positively by trans people.

Oh. Where to begin.

Zelda BotW is a bit contentious, it has some pretty predictable gay sterotypes with the builder characters, and there's the whole Gerudo village "woman on the rooftop" reveal which is pretty gross.

Pillars of Eternity had that whole "backer poem" fiasco that left them adding a trans misogynistic poem into the game via the backer rewards, and their limp attempt to backtrack on it which had that same backer replace it with a snarky "sorry you were offended" poem instead. Plus "fans" went back and modded the original poem back into the game anyway, going as far as to having it displayed on the title screen as the first thing you see when you login because they are garbage humans.

* * *

A better idea would be to promote games that have positive representation as much as negative, or even add those to the streaming roster? There aren't many of those (the only AAA one that comes to mind is Dragon Age Inquisition) but I could look up a few indie titles that are worth a look.

Thanks Clock and Pyxi!
Suggestions for positive games are a wonderful idea. That might be a helpful guide for folks wondering what games to play.

For the latter (and i've not played these myself yet, but they seem to be recommended)....

Heads up on The Red Strings Club, in case you weren't aware, there's a deadnaming incident that occurs in the narrative, and stirred up a little bit of to-do. Here's a run-down of it.

TL:DR - one of the three-person devteam is trans, and the deadnaming incident was very much intentional, done by a character who is obviously a complete asshole, and the fact that it happens and ISN'T remarked upon in the narrative was also intentional, to show that in the game's world, being trans isn't remarkable.

There's an interesting trans character in Ladykiller in a Bind, too but...that might be a little on the risque side for a GWJ livestream

My concern with Red Strings is the possibility of someone being caught off-guard by that. I feel like even knowing all of the context, personally, I would still feel really uncomfortable experiencing that anyway and not sure it's a moment I'd want to share with an unsuspecting viewer.

I have immense respect for what they are doing, but I'm not sure about doing that on stream.

Ladykiller, on the other hand, is wickedly fun but brazen and a little too sexy for us as a crew
