LFG Tabletop RPG Game Thread

Pages

Instead of filling up other RPG/ D&D threads, I thought we could use one which might be mostly news, coordination, and announcements for those currently playing or looking to get a game started.

Discussion of said games is also welcome.

Doodle Poll

Currently setting up a Storm King's Thunder game. 4 people are signed up, I would be ok with as many as 2 more.

So what are the thoughts on character creation? Has anyone thought about character ideas?

I am holding off, to see if there are any house rules/classes or mythos, that may influence my character creation. That being said, I have a soft spot for Monks.

I have been fascinated with Monks since 5th ed came out.

I am happy with whatever character set up, and can always run a NPC character for balance if need be. I don't want any significant changes to WotC rules as it is just easier for me to keep track of things if I can just look them up. This module is built to work with all the previously released content. Just let me know what book or reference you are using so I can get a copy for my reference.

I will be happy to reskin loot to be class appropriate, and am happy to let people craft stuff out of unique monster pieces if you give me a good reason and probably pay an expert craftsman a lot of money.

Are we doing a standard point buy, 4d6 drop lowest etc? Starting at 1st level I assume?

Starting first level, but there is a fast track to level 5 (I don't know the details yet as I just started reading it) or we can goof off on something else until 5, or if everyone is comfortable with the rules and their classes I am ok with starting at 5 (this may change as I haven't read it yet... lol).

I am partial to the 15,14,13,12,10,8 list... but if everyone prefers something else I am game.

I would prefer everyone to think about the choices they have in the first 5 levels so that if we do that we are ready to go. If after playing a couple of sessions someone wants to change class/ race or whatever I am cool with that as well. I'd rather people enjoy the game as opposed to force them into an unfortunate early decision.

Squirrel and I are bouncing around on ideas. I usually go tank, support, and/or toolbox characters, and so usually end up filling whatever we're lacking, since it's been my experience the latter two are less sought after to play.

I personally prefer point buy for stats.

I am thinking of a caster of some sort, not sure yet between sorcerer, warlock or wizard. I am good with that array, just wanted to know before I started into the creation process. That said I would also be willing to go healer if no one else wants to play one.

After some more thought, I am most heavily leaning towards a tempest cleric, not sure yet on race.

I am of this mind as well, since it gives us more opportunity to get the stats we want/need to fit that particular character creation model.

Can someone point me to a good online resource to draw from for character creation? I am pretty sure that I don't have the IRL books, since I either moved and lost/misplaced/traded my stuff.

I would like to go ahead and get a jump on creating my monk, unless you wanted us to save the creation time for our first meeting.

Well I guess that is still caster-y. Thought Tempest Cleric sounded fun myself given the theme of the campaign.

Squirrel currently is leaning towards playing a ranger or barbarian and I'm playing around with an idea for a rogue.

Yeah, wondering how much we should work on before we get together. Which day are we getting together anyhow?

It didn't sound like anyone was real keen on playing a healer so I figured I would just bite the bullet, obviously not my #1 choice but as you say would still be caster-ish.

Cartoonin, I have an ultimate license to FG and own all the 5e resources. I could start up a sandbox session and you could do character creation in there if need be. Has all the books hyperlinked so you could read through options etc.

@Arkon, that would be phenomenal and I would love if you wouldn't mind doing that!

OK, PM sent over, have the "server" up and running and shared the PHB, Sword Coast Adventures and Elemental Evil players companion.

Thanks for offering the fantasy grounds for building! I am happy to help with character creation if any want it, but please feel free to build ahead of time.

I am still debating Monday or Tuesday next week. I am at a conference in Chicago all that week, so I'm not sure which is better. Probably Monday.

I've never played an actual tabletop rpg before but have always wanted to. So what's involved and how annoying is it to have a complete noob in your group? I have yeeeeears of experience with crpgs, Forgotten Realms novels and the Adventure Zone podcast so that makes me... clueless about actual tabletop play.

Monday is just fine for me.

Hit the link above and confirm your availability. I'll be happy to help you set up a character. You are even within an hour's drive if I remember. CRPG's are basically digital D&D. You'll pick it up quick. What role type do you prefer?

Hrmm, after some more contemplating, I somehow overlooked bards. They can bring decent healing to the table while also bringing decent caster elements. Time to explore some more!

I so wish I had time to play

Alright, since we only know for sure that we have a monk so far, I am going to commit to a class. I kept coming back to making sure we had healing, but my preference isn't to play a healer (Sorry just being honest here!), so I would like to commit to the fact that I am going to play a Wizard (Bladesinger).

Thanks to Arkon, for having access to some of his collection, I have partially decided on what my final build will be. I will be going with the Winged Tiefling Monk, but not sure what type of monk as of yet.

I wouldn't worry about the healer, or lack thereof, since the GM has already stated that he can get NPCs into the party if necessary.

Manta, what are your thoughts on the various factions that have been running throughout the released adventures, such as The Harpers and The Zhentarim etc? I was looking at backgrounds in Sword Coast Adventurers Guide and liked the sounds of the faction agent background.

"Healer" isn't really a role in 5e. At least not in the "holy trinity" video game sense where one person stands around spamming heals all the time. Even if you're playing a Life Cleric, the healiest healer in the game, you're still going to spend the vast majority of your time doing non-healing things. You just don't have enough spell slots to spam heals non-stop. Healing spells are generally best saved for preventing imminent death, usually by reviving unconscious party members.

Besides, probably more than half of the classes/archetypes in the game have access to some sort of healing spell, and the rest pretty much all have some way to prevent/mitigate damage, gain temporary HP, etc. Plus anyone could take the Magic Initiate feat to grab some healing spells.

Or you could just buy healing potions.

NNNNNGGGGGGAAAAHHHHH!

I couldn't stand it any more. I've hit the poll and put my availability in there. I've switched late nights with a co-worker every other week, so we'll see how the availability goes from there. I only have three more treatments after this week, so we'll see what happens then.

All times are EST?

Manta, do you have eCharacter sheets that you want us to use in character creation?

Since the campaign will be using Roll20 we will need to create our characters in game once Manta sets it up and invites us.

I'd probably go with some type of rogue. I also just moved to Trussville outside Birmingham so I'm not quite so far out in the central Alabama boonies any more.
