No Man's Sky Catch-All 2.0

Part of it is that you're intended to internalize a few things that turn out to be rock-bottom useful, by dying a few times before you get them down. It saves you running into them later and dying suddenly with a bunch of work behind you.

But I understand that they made the start even more forgiving with the various options now available, so consider that as well.

I want to finally get to this on my backlog on PS5. Is there a good start guide? I tried to get going months ago and was left dying constantly on the tutorial planet having no clue what to do.

Yes I know I can google but there are an even more confusing amount of starter guides? So looking for anyone to help shepherd me here?

They revamped the experience for new players on the latest version, new menus and in-game guides. Try going blind and see if it feels better than previous time.

I got this for Christmas and am trying to play it. I see screenshots all the time of cool space areas, neat ships, etc. but so far I have been running around digging for stuff. First one thing, then another, etc.

How long until it stops being a resource gathering sim and I get to space?

An hour at most if you are playing the tutorial. Though I can see the first time through being confusing and stuck on planet for longer.

Good. I will keep pushing through. I hope it will be the game I imagined when I saw the screenshots.

Depends on which screenshots you saw.

I think I was imagining more exploring and less right click to mine 40 iron, right click to get oxygen, etc.

It may end up not being for me because I got to a point where I had to build a building. Make the floor, get this element, place it, make walls, etc.

I hated that section of Fallout 4 so if I have to do much of that I am not sure I can take it.

I hate base building. You'll have to do a little, but it's only at a very basic level. The game improves dramatically once you get off-planet and start jumping to other systems; there are of course missions available from a mission broker to get stuff, but the real gameplay loop is jumping into systems, exploring planets, and gathering enough resources to get a better ship, and then rinse and repeat. Eventually, you'll wind up with a freighter as effectively a mobile base, and, sure, some people really kit those out, but my usual approach was always to just basically have a giant room where I put the stuff I need into it because base building sucks, and, yes, that is why I never got far into Fallout 4. I can't stand base building, and I have spent a LOT of time in No Man's Sky. It's really fabulous once you get going.

Which is too bad, as the concept of base building is cool. But quickly becomes too much of a hassle.

Grit your teeth and bare with it - NMS has an odd opening but it really opens up once you get off planet and start properly exploring. I would leave the base building (beyond the "tutorial" stuff and get a frieghter when the game takes you to that point. A mobile base works much better in this game than a stationary planetary base - at least, until you want to be creative and make a lovely looking base when you are swimming in resources.

There is always an element of resource gathering in the game as you need that stuff to make better upgrades for ships and things (for example, to get to some planets you need certain drives that require certain resources to build) but it never overwhelms the game.

This week brought another update because why not:
Revamped and diversified Sentinels, new ships, new buildings, battles with Sentinel capitol ships, and a new “corrupted Sentinel” biome.

Major update to visuals for PSVR2. There’s still a little room for improvement, but it looks so much better now.

I am so far behind on checking out update stuff! Arg.

Picked this up last week only 10 hrs in but it has its claws in me deep. Do we have any gwj traveller's?

Not as regular as I used to be, but I still dip every other big patch or so to check out the new content and stuff. There are a couple of big communities like the Galactic Hub and the Alliance of Galactic Travellers that are great for making friends and learning tips and tricks.

I think I played No Man's Sky about a dozen updates ago. Okay, not really that long ago. Thoroughly enjoyed a couple hundred hours with it. I really ought to have another go at it.

I keep wanting to jump back in but there's so much to do now and it's hard to know what I should get through for a pleasant playthrough.

This seemed like a good time to dive back in and I'm just as hooked as last time. After such a long break it's refreshing to start from scratch but with the added knowledge of my previous games

One tip it took me far to long to discover. When you upgrade your exosuit you can move the cursor from the default inventory square and click on a Technology square instead.

I know right?

I just did a spooky deserted freighter run. Great fun and very profitable.

Also digging the new "run your own settlement" sim. Which I wasn't expecting.

Am loving my new ship.

That is very ethereal, Strangederby. Great ship. S class?

That is gorgeous! Do you have coordinates for where you found it?

Sorry, I'm not sure about coordinates but it landed at something called an Echo Repository in a research // prosperous system if that helps.

I think I just got lucky. It was a relatively cheap B class explorer with Vesper Sail engine tech in it's tech slot.

Here's some more tips I found while browsing Reddit.

You can exchange one of your decent ships with an alien and then immediately recruit them into your squadron. So you can have your old ships as a squadron.

Changing the size of the terrain manipulator to a smaller size (bumper or trigger button) yields more resources per deposit. Spend way less time mining now.

If you're in 1st person, you can get most Salvage data without digging.

You can pick up plants and storm crystals from inside the minotaur.

Build a planetary probe on your freighter, as soon as you enter a new system, activate it to discover all planets in that system and all resources.

You can highlight specific items ( ie. Frostwort gamma weed) in your “discoveries” tab in order to find a nearby start system that will have Ћ item you’re searching for.

You can feed living frigates whatever food you cook to change their stats.

I picked this up at the beginning of the summer. Had a lot of stressful stuff going on in my life, and this was an excellent game to chill out to while listening to podcasts or music. I even managed to complete the most recent expedition.

As you get a little further into the game, using coordinates in the portals can lead you interesting places, and there's a reddit group specifically for that.

I'll look up my friend code next time I play.

Found myself an S class.
