Hey gang, new game incoming!
But first - these are the guidelines for these playthroughs -
1. Games should be at least 1 calendar year old. That makes it easy to find games that are either a) on most people's piles or b) cheap to pick up(I am thinking 10-15 bucks max).
2. Games should be either episodic or broken up into easily agreed upon stopping points (i.e. achievement for ch.1 or reaching certain checkpoint). I would like it to be about an hour to an hour and a half for each "assigned" session, no more than 5-6 hours a week needed to participate.
3. Games shouldn't be more than 20 hours.
4. No console exclusives. Has to be on Microsoft/Playstation/PC platforms.
Hey Gang, this game has been sitting on my pile for about 6 months, waiting for the game to fit the guidelines for a Game Club playalong - and September makes it fit the bill! As a child of the 80s Mad Max is one of those universes that has always kind of been in the background of my fantasy play, and when this game came out I was immediately intrigued. Not a super financial success, it has been highly recommended to me as a great open world to explore. Combining fun driving, exploration, and Arkham-lite combat - along with great graphics and a fun progression system, I think we are in for a lot of fun this month. There are 15 story missions and we will do 5 a week for 3 week - that should give us plenty of time to explore as we experience the game.
I really hope you will join us!
Count me in! I picked this up in the summer Steam sale and have been looking for an excuse to play it ever since.
I am planning to join in too
I made a brief foray into it already out of curiosity in case I don't get the chance later what with Deus Ex and school starting up again next month - initial thoughts...
- It's certainly a traditional open world game. "towers" to climb and locations to tick off the map, etc. Which is something I've not played for a while so makes for a surprisingly refreshing change. Especially after the procedural void of No Man's Sky.
- Combat is hella Batman.
- The scenery (former sea beds turned endless desert) is very brown and yellow but kind of pretty
- There was a brief reference to...let's call it the abbreviated term for "Transistor"....in an early cut-scene which was a bit of a nasty surprise and in this day and age I highly suspect a dev team with a bit more tact and forethought might have replaced it with something a little more acceptable and still gotten the same point across. So that was a bit of a sour note.
- Also. Everyone in this apocalyptic future seems to be grizzled MANS! ...even the dog. No sign of any women yet, outside of photographs and memorabilia. Early days though, eh. I'm sure Furiosa will be along soon....right?
...right?
If anyone sees a good price for this in the UK let me know!

It's a fairly common shortening of "transmission", but yeah, that struck me too.
And, unfortunately, there is no Furiosa in this. They nail the overall visual style, but aside from some character names, it's pretty much totally separate from the movie storywise. There are, IIRC, 2 named women characters and a young girl. One of the women is a badass, disabled leader of a stronghold. The other woman, and the girl are basically a package deal and are... not well handled.
I actually meant Transmission but typed Transistor instead... shows how much *I* know about cars

Argos and The Game Collection had it for £15.99 and £15.95 recently. Both PS4. I'm not sure about XBOX.
Maq posted in the game sale thread, $10 at bundle stars!

Wow, that's £6.24 for me. That's probably too good to pass up. I've never actually heard of bundlestars. I take it they're a reputable seller?
I have bought from them once or twice using PayPal. No issues here.
Roger that. Mad Maq standing by.

In defence that is absolutely the usual way to refer to that car part in Australia, to the point that calling it a transmission would sound strangely clinical.
Not to say that they possibly couldn't have given it some thought and tried to step around it but it's the right in-world/in-character term so it wasn't meant as a stealth slur or anything.
Sure, I get that it (probably*) wasn't a deliberate slur but, let's be honest - EVERYONE surely should know by now who that term is mostly aimed at these days. I'm quite sure that something else could have replaced it in the script with just a tiny bit of effort and editing.
* While I would probably give them the benefit of the doubt and put it down to just good ol' "cis privilege" of not even considering that the use of that term might be offensive given your releasing your game globally. I'm reasonably certain that the types of (white cis males) involved in game development/writing also include a fair number who would find it endlessly amusing to slip in a controversial word in there just to mess with those annoying "SJW's".

Just wanted to add my 2 pennies, the game is big about cars, they make the big block v8 the holy grail. I'm a transmission mechanic by trade and that abriviated term is used 99% of the time by everyone in the mechanic world. It would be out of place if they used proper terminalogy for every car part. As a mechanic I have pretty thick skin but it just seems to me people are just looking for a reason to get offended about something.
That being said I doubt I'll be able to play with you guys this month as there far to many new games I have on order for september.

Please don't do this. That word is a slur for trans women. Has been for a long time. It's not a new thing.
We can recognize that it is ALSO car jargon, but knowing that's it's car jargon doesn't necessarily make it sting less to hear it said. We are not "looking for reasons to be offended". That's not a thing people actually do, and when you suggest that it is, you are essentially saying that attacks on our humanity is no big deal and we should just shrug it off, which is an incredibly privileged thing to say.
My apologies, I did not mean to offend anyone.
Ok, I'm in on PC. I'm pretty slow at games in general so I'd better start sooner rather than later.

Just played past the part in question and, yeah, they could have completely sidestepped it. Again I don't think there was any malice at all but there was certainly no due diligence either.
If only they would stop mispronouncing "Dinky-Di". It's setting my teeth on edge.
I'm curious... How do they pronounce it Maq? Secondary of course to my question of *why* they pronounce it at all since it's more appropriate in a Blinky Bill cartoon than a post-apocalyptic murder simulator...

"Dinky-Dee"
They call the dog Dinky-Di, because that's the brand of dog food that keeps showing up in-game.
...Which means that the dog is named after a kind of dog meat.
...Like that other dog in that other post-apocalyptic game - Dogmeat.
...Who was based on the dog from Mad Max.
We're through the looking glass here, people. This is some Inception level nonsense.
I.... see. I couldn't think of a reasonable way to mispronounce it and my stance remains unchanged. That seems like another weird oversight considering other efforts they appear to have made towards localisation and authenticity.
I'm really enjoying this so far! The completionist in me is very happy with some of the decisions they've made around percentages, checkboxes, and 'looting complete!" messages. Everything is hunky dory.

I'll be the big dumb American here. How do you pronounce Dinky-Di? Dinky-Dee would be the obvious pronunciation in America. Is it Dinky-Die? Dinky-Dih? (And is it Dinky rhymes with stinky, or does it have a short i like minty?)

Dinky as in stinky. Di as in pie.
I mean it's a really old-timey expression but it's strange to hear it said that way.
Played a bit more - happily the number of women in "extra" roles (such as fixing settlements, guards, and those scouts in the desert) has increased dramatically - and they are all dressed much the same as the men are and sound suitably gravelly and tough, which is nice to see.

How on earth do you deal with Minefields? It says to use the dog but I don't appear to have him with me at the moment - is that something that unlocks the more you play the story or am I just missing something?
I think you need to drive the buggy and the dog will go for a ride.
I got started on this game this week and I am really digging the core gameplay big-time. Very well put together. I am only in the first part of Act 2 but am eager to keep going, especially when they take off the training wheels and really let me get going on the upgrading for the car!
