I've preordered a Model 3 and so I've started paying more attention to Tesla news in general, and it occurred to me that I hadn't seen a Tesla thread on GWJ. Unless The Googles are completely failing me, there isn't really one so I thought I'd make one.
I love his ambitions to basically build the nation's electric filling station infrastructure. I almost wish he could run for president.
Getting very serious (and excited!) about preordering a Model 3. They're saying mid-'18 or later for delivery, which is around the time I'm planning on replacing my '07 Subaru which currently has 115k miles.
Ranger Rick, is there anything that occurred after you put the $1K down that isn't listed on the FAQ page? I imaging no but thought I'd ask.
Just pulled the trigger on a 3! I know it's only a reservation but I was pleasantly surprised to see the terms & conditions to be just a half-a-page. Good times!
Their Solar Roof website is up. Beautiful, genius product.
Yes, as you know, they're starting west and going east so being in Maine, I expect delivery by end-of-'18 rather than mid!
LOVE those shots...thanks for sharing. Good to see more of the front-to-back glass roof, it really opens things up. That blue is killer, not too loud. Call me boring but there's something about a silver.
Man I would love to own a Tesla, but the price makes it totally out of reach.
I can't even afford a regular crappy combustion engine car. Which I is fine with me because I really don't want to buy another combustion engine car, and would hate the temptation having the money for one would bring.
Yeah, that car is damn sexy in all of the colors.
Dang, 50k for that solar roof is really pricing it out of the majority of home owners. Maybe a new house build can justify but tat is a lot to add to a budget. Definitely no recently built houses are going to tear off their roof and replace this. It needs to get down to the 10k range to be more widely used.

Oh yeah, it's meant for new construction. I don't think they have any expectation of anyone (other than rich crazy people) tearing off a perfectly good existing roof to do it.
I think they are hoping people who need to replace their shingles will go with this instead, but at 50k, I don't see how. I kept hearing this will be cheaper then replacing with regular shingles before energy savings, but I guess they are hoping the cost will come down in a few years?
I'm definitely putting Tesla on the radar for when I finish paying off my house.
I thought they had always just said it'd be cheaper than a conventional roof *if* you count the energy savings, but I'll admit I haven't looked as closely into that stuff because our house is only a few years old so I'm not getting a new roof anytime soon.
I did hear that too, but I also heard Elon Musk say it would be cheaper than a regular roof, before energy savings factored in, as well. Again maybe he meant eventually it would become cheaper.
But at the current price, that's a hard pill to sallow, unless you are flush with cash and can wait for the energy savings to finally have made it worth wile.
If I ever had the money to build a house and buy a car, I would certainly try my best to go this route. I love the idea of having free power/backup power, when the grid goes down due to problems, and never having to pull into a gas station for gas, that would be so glorious!
I don't like white cars much, but I think it's the colour of choice for the 3 of the ones seen so far. It really highlights the lines around the front end. I'd like to see it in yellow.

Having driven an electric car (non-Tesla) for the last two and a half years, I will testify to that glory!
With the range that Tesla cars claim, you'd be less likely to end up hunting down or waiting around at electric charging stations like I have on several occasions.

AFFORDABLE
Costs less than an equivalent roof when combined with projected utility bill savings. Various financing options will be available.
You pretty much turn your electricity bill into a financed new roof if the math makes sense. Obviously depending on how much electricity costs you locally, how much you use and how much your roof could actually generate is how it all shakes out.
I've always heard that *today*, it's cheaper than a regular (SoCal tile or New England slate) roof, but *not* an asphalt shingle roof. That price point is hoped to come in the future.
Yes, very sharp. I've noticed other pics in the Tesla Model 3 google photo box have number decals much like the one above has (55). Does that signify anything specific? Perhaps the number in the production line?
Hey a Tesla thread!
I put down a reservation on a 3, but...
I currently own a 2013 Model S, and Tesla called me up a couple weeks ago and offered a pretty crazy value for trade in. More than the car is currently worth to be honest. They are also letting me refer myself for $1000 off and some other incentives. Not sure why they want my car off the road so bad, but I've pulled the trigger on ordering a 100D. So, I'll be canceling my 3 reservation. They say delivery by end of June! Very excited.

I saw one of those at the ABB show in March and it was so so nice. You are very lucky!
Hmm, this is pretty interesting, though it falls into the rumor category. If true, maybe this is why they want my old car so bad.
I suspect similar. Must be related to keeping numbers up on S/X. It's okay by me!
I don't like cars.
I've always lived in walking/biking/transit situations.
My friend works for Tesla and drove me around in an S and it's the only time in my life I've actually wanted to own a car.
I didn't even drive it. I hate driving. I want to own one that just takes me places on command.
