Rio Olympics

Pages

I am pretty excited for the Olympics, I hope all is going to go smoothly and Brazil puts on a show worthy of their efforts. I am like many people that this is the only time I watch many of these sporting events and I am planning to sit down and watch other people do amazing things on my big TV.

TV coverage here for reference.

Yeah, always enjoy to watch it. This time it might not even be too bad with the time difference for me. Events at noon and afternoon would be afternoon/evening here, which is perfect.

Things weren't going very well in Rio. Mostly to do with infrastructure delays, I think.
Hope they get their sh*t together before the games start.

I heard the other day they dropped wrestling, I can't believe they dropped wrestling! It is like the quintessential Olympic sport.

They dropped it at least 1 olympics ago. TV ratings weren't there if I remember. Kinda stupid since it allowed every country to compete with a minimal investment of funds.

And it was one of the original sports - there is a lot of bloat in the sport lineup, but the should have kept it.

I wonder how they will show the 4K content? Streaming partners?

There has been some Olympic talk in the feminism thread that might be of interest here, but I have responded to Badken's latest post here to avoid further derailment there.

On the rare occasions when I watch the Olympics, I do so to watch the best athletes from all over the world do what they do best. I am fairly annoyed at US-centric coverage. One would think, with all the network technology at our disposal now, streams of all the events would be available both live and archived, with or without commentary.

Yeah, sports without commentary has been tried. It's not good.

NBC Olympics Digital Coverage Reaching New Heights

Many athletes are likely to set new records during competition at this year’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but NBC Olympics plans to set its own high mark in terms of streaming. The broadcaster has announced that it will stream 4,500 hours of content, including live streaming of all competition; TV simul-stream coverage of nine TV networks; streaming to connected TVs; two apps, two digital-only programs, and an active news desk.

Streaming of coverage from all nine NBCUniversal Olympic networks will also be available. These include NBC, Telemundo, Bravo, CNBC, Golf Channel, MSNBC, NBC Sports Network, NBC Universo and USA Network. If an event is not television on one of these networks, it will be available online, per NBC Olympics.

Additional features include concurrent streams of events that have multiple fields of action, like gymnastics and track and field; temporary pass to allow 30 minutes of streaming prior to authentication on the first visit, and five minutes subsequently; video-on-demand coverage; Spanish-language option for most English-language streams; and closed-captioning in English.

NBC Olympics will also have the “NBC Olympics: Rio News & Results” app. In addition to its namesake, the app will feature video highlights, TV listings, medal standings, dedicated sections for each sport, Team USA and international athlete bios, and the “Primetime Companion” feature, which serves as a second-screen tool for NBC’s primetime coverage.

There will also be a pair of digital only offerings. “Gold Zone” curates coverage of live events depending on importance (i.e. gold medal, overtimes). “Daily Dismount” offers daily post-event coverage of gymnastics. “Ever Wonder” is a social-focused, short-form video series NBC Sports Digital will offer on the curiosities of the Olympics. A digital news desk will also be available with hosts Julie Donaldson and Jenna Corrado.

As previously announced, NBC Olympics will also offer virtual reality coverage of the Games through Samsung VR gear.

Brazillian doctors are advising athletes to not open their mouths when at sea since there's human poo and all kinds of potent bacteria floating around. Not getting sick is going to be a sport in itself. Probably the most exciting of them all.

Maybe the disqualified Russians will end up as the real winners.

Lovely, just lovely for those having to swim in that.

IANAD but I'm pretty sure closing your eyes and mouth isn't going to prevent the issues that brings up....

Are there swimming events in it? I'm only used to seeing people swim in pools.

Now, rowing, yes. Tons of rowing through sh*t.

Usually the *athalon events are in open water. How they are expected to swim or row or kayak or whatever without opening their mouths I have no idea. What a disgrace.

If the IOC had any integrity, they'd cancel at least the open water events and hold them at another time or place. But, you know, the IOC probably doesn't have any integrity.

Saw some Australian swimming team spokesperson saying today that it wasn't particularly worse than what they were swimming in at some other events.
Not that it makes it sound much better that they are used to swim in stuff like that.
Maybe it is a great motivator for finishing fast.

Do you think they were being entirely truthful, or just being polite?

Not sure how polite I would bother to be if I had to swim around in sh*t. Probably somewhere in between.
Don't understand why Rio didn't find another place to have the open water swimming contests though. Sounds like it has been known for quite a long time.

Just to cross post this here, US women's soccer is tonight. I am so stoked.

Wrestling was reinstated almost as fast as it was dropped. It will be absent from the 2016 games but it's back for 2020.

There is wresting this year.

Even better. The last I had heard was that it wasn't back until 2020.

2 - 0

Not too bad.

Brasil's men's soccer team only managed a scoreless draw against South Africa. Some of you may remember that they sent their B team to the Copa America this summer in order to focus on the Olympics.

USA has 554 athletes at the games. Guess how many are our men's national soccer team?

Men's Olympic soccer is kind of an odd duck, mostly as a result of trying to not simply be a weaker World Cup. Nations basically send their U23 squads, but are allowed to include three senior players.

Still, the inability of the US men to qualify for either of the past two cycles is an embarrassing failure, for sure.

[Edit: "World Cuo" is not a thing, phone.]

Opening ceremony coverage was pretty spotty by NBC. Lots of commercials right in the middle of things, and then some weird cut-ins with director, explaining what was going on at times.

I just hope NBC actually show events at the time they happen since there's no time zone difference. There's no excuse to delay things like they did in 2012.

Even if they are allowed to include senior players it can be difficult, since the national leagues do not bother to fit the Olympics into their schedules. So getting the football clubs to allow any of the decent players to participate is spotty at best.

Alright streaming, let's see how we do. Water polo!

We got our first gold medals in the Women's 10m air rifle shooting.
